dammit

i did this at work yesterday
out all night  - get in this morning and everyone and their dog has had a go at this

oh well might as well post it anyway

the problem i see with doing this is that even if a lightsaber can cut through anything there should probably be a drag factor when cutting through armor like that - think qui-gon melting the blast doors in tpm but not so severe. that may make it undo-able. plus ady didn't seem too keen on this idea iirc. still he's changed his mind before :)

I agree about the Qui Gon reference, which is why I think a more subtle saber cut would work better. It just bugs me a little that the saber cuts the latch, makes an explosion, but doesn't leave any marks.

Ady, will you be adding any saber marks for this shot? I figure since Luke swings across the surface, rather than stabbing the door lock, that it seems logical to see where Luke's saber touched the surface. Thoughts?

Luke had cut the latch and there is no real place to add any burn marks. i may add a faint heat glow on each section of the latch but that's about it

Ehh, I understand where you're coming from Ady, but it IS a lightsabre not a lockpick... not to mention, when Luke swings that thing, does the FX of the blade go through any of the metal around the door?

Thats the reason I brought it up. The door hatch seems to appear like it is indented, meaning when Luke swung the saber it looks like he just swipes it across the surface, hitting the lock mechanism in the process, rather than "picking the lock" as previously said. At least to me, it looks like the saber is cutting from the latch itself, to the area on the upper side (from camera's POV) of the latch.

This mockup is crude, and maybe a bit exaggerated, but only to show the path of the cut I see (rough, might not be accurate). What I would really want to see is something not as distracting, but still visible. Hope this gets my idea across better. Apologies for the poor quality.

Didn't see anything mentioned about this, but I'd like to see marks left by Luke's lightsaber after cutting the hatch open underneath the AT-AT.

As you can see, there's a clear path from where the saber first hits the exterior of the AT-AT, to where the saber is finished cutting. I don't know how to do this kind of mockup, so I'll leave it to someone with more skill in that area.

Talk about a wretched hive of scum and villiany...and FBI investigations.

The guys at SB.com always told be never ask what 'the game' is or go there...ever.

Sorry, sorry umm back on topic.

Is Ady going to fix some of the sight lines on the Yoda puppet when outside with Luke and some of the weird lime green colors around its mouth.

By sight lines I'm assuming you mean where Yoda's eyes are looking... and I agree, I think there are a few spots here and there where it could use work. I don't have examples to point out at the moment, sorry.

I don't have immediate access to my copy of The Thing at the moment, so I can't confirm anything, but are there not additional shots taken from the viewpoint of the helicopter later in the film, when Kurt Russell goes to the Swedish camp?

If not, oh well.

Any footage from planet earth?

Or The day after tomorow?

-Angel

funny you mention that because i was checking out The Day After Tomorrow before posting and there is only one shot of a snow scape flyover and that is right at the beginning. unfortunately it has the opening credits covering up the section i would need to use and the ground is CGI and wouldn't match ESB

How about John Carpenter's The Thing? Lots of shots in that film with helicopters used. Maybe there is something there?

Wanting to ask you guys a semi-related question: for my Revisited cover series, I'm tossing up between two variants on the ESB logo (and also TPM for when that comes around). I'm posting them here — if anyone has any opinions on them, I'd love to hear.

I'm tending toward the second version of each.

I like the 2nd Empire... but like the 1st Phantom.

Perhaps someone should do a casting search for a Mark Hamill look-a-like for additional shots.

While we are on the subject of Lynchian Star Wars :

"One chance out between two worlds, lightning walk with me" :

Dark Side Of The Lodge

Seriously though a deep red throne room might look more interesting (it would match his guards) anyone want to give it a try?

Looks a bit talk show-ish to me...

THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH EMPEROR PALPATINE!

Shouldn't that be "ENITAPLAP ROREPME HTIW WOHS THGINOT EHT!" ?

Forget the background features for a minute though and look at how that vibrant red really brings out the hideousness of those features. It could work (though Vader's blade might get a little lost in there).

Vader and the guards are the live band off to the side!

But yeah, I think Vader's saber would cause an issue there, during the duel. I like how it is so dark that you really get to see the duel through the brightness of the sabers. They are like the only form of color found in that sequence it seems! Its cool. Adding a red background could take away from that.

Okay, here are a few frames from the shot that bothers me the most, hopefully to put it into a better perspective.

As you can see, now that the progress of this shot is more apparent, rather than just the single freeze frame I posted before, this shot has always bothered me because it makes the Falcon look EXTREMELY tiny in the first frame of the shot. I know it should be small compared to the Star Destroyer, but when this shot is compared to the MANY  other shots that contain the Falcon and the SD in the same frame, this looks completely inaccurate. The Falcon seems to me to be way too small in this shot. Either that, or the SD is way too big.

Compare with this shot, which is the only one that has a near-side view, which helps visualize the size difference:

Ady, I'm curious, do you have any plans to address the issues with this sequence? I hate how the size differences between the Falcon and the SD are inconsistent between shots.

i hope he stills considers doing the intereactive light on luke (crosses fingers)

You mean during the duel with Vader in the carbon freezing chamber?  If so... there IS a faint blue light being cast on his face now (as well as red by Vader's saber).

Finally I can talk about the trailer... you don't have to read this if you have yet to see it.

... yes, there IS a faint light of blue, particularly when Luke ignites the saber and it gets REALLY close to his face. Slow motion reveals it better. There is also the red glow that appears on his face from the tip of Vader's saber, but it is faint and easy to miss at first, but Ady DID say that he would keep it faint, so I'm not surprised. I think it looks great anyhow.

Does anyone else think the Taun Taun in the early part of the trailer appears to be moving much more smoothly and realistically than before? Or am I tripping??

I hope the shot of the Falcon taking off from Cloud City is somewhat temporary, at least in regards to the blueness of the engine exhaust, which seems too... I don't know... big? I'm having a difficult time coming up with a way to explain that. BUT... seeing all those ships in the background evacuating Cloud City is awesome!

But the part that I absolutely HATED... was seeing the "Coming 2010"! It made me wish it was no longer 2009 right now!

I dont think that the MF is growing or shrinking. Its all about from what angle you shoot it.

Also the MF has the correct size when it passes the bridge and after when its landed at the back.

Also in the third pic you posted some frames before and later we see some flashes when the lasers hit the shields of MF.

-Angel

But in the 2nd and 3rd shot, look at the closeness of the SD to the camera, as compared with the distance of the MF. In the 2nd shot, the SD looks further away from the camera than in the 3rd shot, angled or not, while the MF is closer in the 2nd shot, but incredibly far away in the 3rd shot, looking more like the size of the Jedi Starfighter from ROTS than being the big ship that the MF is.

It just bugs me how small the MF looks in the 3rd shot. If the SD were further away from the camera it would at least look accurate and match with the other shots. So a way to fix this would be to either start with a closer image of the MF in the first frame of the shot, or pull the SD further into the background.

The final shot, of the MF hiding, I can definitely live with, but it still seems like it might be just the tiniest bit too big looking compared to how it looks in the rest of the shots. But that doesn't bother me nearly as much as that 3rd shot.

There's always a horizon line, perspective doesnt stop and start on one fixed line in reality, everywher you look there is a horizon line... as Yoda would say.. "it surrounds us... binds us... ties the galaxy together" lol if you would like to study up on basic camera techniques and theory I suggest a text  book called "Shot by Shot".

Funny... I have that book.

But anyway, I had to wait 12 hours before I could go home and download the trailer... that was the longest day ever! Great way to end the day though!

As for an issue that bothers me a bit... is it me, or is the size perspective between the Millennium Falcon and the Star Destroyer Avenger inconsistent during the last chase before Han Solo outsmarts Captain Needa by hiding behind the SD?

In at least one shot, the Falcon either shrinks a LOT, or the SD grows to be the size of the Super Star Destroyer, then their sizes seem to go back to normal.

In the first two shots, the Falcon and the SD look about right.

Suddenly the Falcon shrunk a lot, and is barely seen around the area of the deflector shield ball thingy.

Okay thats much better for size perspective.

Looks right to me.

Maybe the Falcon looks a tiny bit bigger than it did before, now that it is physically touching the back of the SD by being parked on it? Should it not be maybe a little smaller looking here, since it is now THAT close to the SD? I don't know.

It hasn't been getting dry. We just try to make sure our ideas arent retarded.

I will need to rewatch ESB again soon and look for specific errors to get some ideas that may not have been touched upon by Adywan.

Otherwise the only idea I will have ever had was the Falcon monitor, which got shot down faster than an Imperial on a swoopbike!

Concerning models versus cgi, I'm glad ady is gooing the model route. I am still of the opinion that models look better thn cg, at least with bigger ships, because they are actually there. Something about them actually existing rather than just being rendered in a computer. For instance, I thought most capital ships in the pt looked fake, like from a video game.

Yeah I got that feel as well. I think a mix of CGI and practical effects is really the best way to go in most modern cases.
