Oh_riginal, you've done it!

Those guys definitely look clearer and so the scale is easier to get from that very brief shot. I think it's worked wonderfully well, achieved exactly the idea I was hoping for. Thanks for putting that together.

Great stuff!

You're welcome.

But it doesn't answer the BIG question... who is Will, and why did Emperor Palpatine select him to be killed first!

I keed, I keed...

Link to the Jabba's Palace Approach re-do removed, as the video is now deleted. Will repost a new one when I can finish it.

If I were to make any change, it would be to make the firing chambers immensely bigger (is immensely a word?) because I don't really feel the true power of lasers that are only as thick as the officers standing beside them.

I'd shrink down the size of the guards and their station to me very small next to the weapon, that's the only real way to give it true scale.

Is this along the lines of what you are thinking? It's rough, and could definitely use some improvement, but I think it helps to get the idea across.

Excellent.

That is precisely the effect I was trying to describe. I actually wouldn't have made them so small, as they're quite hard to see (then again, I haven't seen that on a big TV), but it does achieve precisely the effect I would want. That laser now looks absolutely massive, as well it should.

Loving it.

I did a 2nd attempt at it, hopefully making the guys a little more obvious in the shot. Enjoy.

I just did a mock-up, using Darth Venal's matte. Mostly because I was curious to see it with something moving within it, more than anything!

Hope you guys enjoy it.

I think the guards should be wearing protective armour. Come on a laser that big should melt anyone standing next to it.

Like when Qui gon have his hands 2 centimeters from a molten door and he was cool or obi and anakin were fighting into a lava river:)

Ah yes i forgot. those all were "Jedi"

-Angel

Can't comment on Qui Gon and the molten door, but for at least most of the lava river duel, Obi Wan and Anakin were standing on top of droids and vehicles that were shielded... hence the blue glowy stuff underneath them.

Still, there was plenty of times in that duel that the heat alone should have hurt them a lot.

Personally I never liked the way the weapon fired in the first place.

There is a big dish with a nipple in the middle so it just makes more sense to me that the smaller beams focused on the nipple thing (technincal term) and the large ray fired out of it and was focused by the dish.

Having everything fire out into space and meet there looks suitably science fantasy but doesn't really make much sense visually.

If you're talking about the appearance of the laser firing in ANH and ROTJ and how different they look, I 100% agree, and this has always bothered me.

If I had been on the forums before ANH:R, I might have requested to make the laser firing of the ANH Death Star to be more like the ROTJ Death Star. It probably would even be one of the easier effects to create! Just add an extra laser beam coming out of the center of the dish upon firing.

In my opinion, it just "looks right" to have it that way in ROTJ.

I support this idea to an extent. Yes, the Death Star is still under construction, but the laser is supposed to basically be 100% finished already (unbeknownst to the Rebellion at first). The mock-up does a great job of showing how it might look in the firing chamber as being 99% finished (just missing the fancy "shine" of the panels, as mentioned).

But the red iron stuff seems to be more like the construction of gun towers and such. I would imagine that yes, there may be some of that stuff used in the construction of the laser, but if the laser is completed enough to the point of being operational, it would need to have its interior be strong and durable... and in this case, only missing panels, nothing more.

But why does everything have to be shiny to be finished? Given the immense destructive capability of the weapon, I'm not sure a few metal panels would make any difference.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. What I mean to say is, the mock-up makes the laser chamber look incomplete BUT STILL safely operational, with the 1% leftover for construction being the panels, which are not needed to fire the weapon. One could assume those would be put on last anyway.

Adding anything more to the mock-up, such as the red iron, would be overkill. The mock-up works very well just as it is. It gets the point across that the laser is not 100% finished, but can still safely fire a laser. Sorry if I wasn't clear the first time.

As for the scale, I can agree with that. Though I've often wondered if the laser shown is one of the smaller lasers that shoots out to connect to the other lasers, before shooting the huge laser.

Now ontopic.

I started a new superlaser interior that looks incomplete and more "organic"

Its still wip and the gunners section is temp. I was wondering if someone with better English than me can tell me when i can find panels with lights like we see it in ANH and nuclear factories

-Angel

Wow angel. It is all cyberpunky.

It might be nice to carry some of that iron red girder motif down from the surface so it looks like they are firing the thing without all the nice glossy panels installed yet.

The reason he asks (in the 2004 DVD version) "how is that possible?" is because he is still a bit astounded that he has a son even though he knew Padme had died.

Yeah, Anakin was always quite daft, so I guess it makes sense to change Vader's character a bit to follow suite.

"How is this possible? The man who pulled the wool over the eyes of the galaxy for all those years, and manipulated me and lied to me personally countless times told me she had died, so there is no doubt she had really died. Since galactic technology is pretty low tech and primitive, there is absolutely no way the baby could have been saved by medical means... oh man! I am so confused! Ooooh, my head hurts! Ouch, gotta stop trying to force myself to think so hard! Gotta go meditate on this."

It's a bit hard playing dumb with a guy you know can read your mind.

I thought the whole Sith dogma thing was designed to avoid all this.

Palpatine knows Vader is plotting against him (he wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't) it's an unspoken given when someone in one of Mario Puzo's books or in one of Graves' Claudius books refers to another character as "My friend" you know one of them will have plans to kill the other.

Having Vader play dumb is too dumb for a character like Vader.

Oh, them whacky Sith... they always gotta be one-uppers, trying to one-up each other! Too bad Darth Maul never got his chance!

An interesting idea, but one i probably won't be doing. The clone wars is after all part of the EU.

I wish it was true but I think Lucas said that the CG Clone Wars movie and the CG TV series (series that I find myself enjoying for the most part, unlike the "movie") are Star Wars canons (?)

But of course on this matter it all depends of our personal state of mind!

Lucas did indeed say that. The idea is that the films, CG series and forthcoming TV series will be official cannon, and everything else EU (and so fair-game for contradiction - see Karen Travis's hissyfit and subsequent quitting writing for SW for details).

Of course, that doesn't mean (as you suggest) they have to be a part of adywan's personal canon, but they are not considered EU by lucasfilm.

I wasn't intending to start a canon debate at all. Just wanted to point that out.

I just wanted to show in my mock-up how my idea for having IG-88's head turn like the 2-D and CG cartoon in ESB can make the droid have more "life" in it's movement, making the droid, well, more droid-like. In a sense, the mock-up is similar to the ANH:R cantina scene, making aliens appear more "alive" with facial expressions and blinks, but instead with a droid and it's working parts in the head. Same ballpark, in a sense. And I truly do believe that my mock-up is effective in getting that across, especially since it is very subtle, and doesn't pull too much attention away from the Vader/Boba dialogue exchange.

I'll take a moment to weigh in on the canon debate... if I'm not mistaken, I think I remember reading somewhere that Lucas doesn't consider the 2-D series to be canon, but does support the CG series as canon, especially since he has his eyes and hands all over that series in one way or another, while he had a lot less involvement creatively in the original 2-D series.

Oh, and that was a neat little clip, oh_riginal.  I personally loved that subtle difference in movement, and hope Ady decides to do it too.

I like how it turned out. Better than I was hoping for, actually! The best part is that IG-88's head only turns slightly, so no matter what, the difference was always going to be subtle, which I preferred anyhow. That way the effect doesn't attract too much attention to itself, while still giving IG-88 a little bit more life (at least in my opinion.)

A cool but absolutely unnecessary add would be to have IG-88's "eyes" move independently of each other, similar to how they did in the 2-D Clone Wars cartoon (and I think also in the new CGI Clone Wars, if I recall correctly). But yeah, not an important change, just would be cool to see in a non-animated version.

Nobody ever commented or replied to this idea, so I thought I'd bring it back up, but now...

... with a mock-up! Just wanted to make it clear what I was talking about in the first place.

Could it just be the angle and the areas of the frame that the sun appears, that is fooling you all into thinking it is sunset?

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west (at least on Earth), after all. Having the sun rise on one side of the frame may sway you one way or the other on feeling it is sunrise or sunset.

Just a thought.

The shot gets more life with the panels and lights aswell the lights point the center that there is the action. Id like to add more panels/ lights but since the tantive is damaged not everything working right?

I actually like that more than the shot as is. Useless PT lights and all.

Lando: Remove his laughs also (together with Nien Numb!). In the climax of the movie we have Lando screaming "YAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"

This is a removal idea that I do NOT support. I don't see anything wrong with it. Some of the other ideas sound good though. The removal of the Ewok stealing a speederbike is a good one in my opinion, but I wouldn't remove the entire thing, just have the scene change after the Ewok speeds off, but NOT show his little adventure while riding the bike. After all, the point of the scene has weight, as it is a distraction that helps the Rebels. It just goes on too long is all.

I never minded the CGI replacement of the lead singer too much, since even as a kid I was RIPPED out of the movie when the puppet would pop up. However the other singer countered that effect and made the scene terrible in a whole other way.

But THIS mock-up is awesome in my opinion, and would be in ROTJ if I were to make my own fan-edit.
