Episode III: Revenge of the Ridiculousness

You are not the first to suggest using Pulp Fiction.

I can only imagine there might be a lot more than assumed!

Anyway, after almost a whole day of trying to download this (blocked) video from my old youtube account, here is finally the scene I edited a few years back that might have some ideas salvageable for ROTR in regards to the Windu VS Palpatine duel! Enjoy.

http://vimeo.com/65487800

A thought I had as I watched it again, there could be a "Reservoir Dogs" moment as they walk through the door into Palpatine's office, playing "Little Green Bag" by the George Baker Selection, and each Jedi could have their name pop up over them like opening credits, making it seem as if they are important characters...

Only to all get killed by Palpatine in under 10 seconds, aside from Windu!

I'm no cover artist but here's a quick-n-dirty cut-n-paste of one concept...

It's a reversible cover for a 2 disc case - the kind with one spindle in each cover half.  If you want to display the other version, just flip the case over.

Actually, the simplicity of it works pretty well, as opposed to creating a whole new cover, which would be challenging.

I honestly prefer Adywan's work to the original theatrical releases. I guess perfection can still be made more perfect :)

I love Ady's work, minus a few minor, overlookable things, but I love Harmy's Despecialized edits just as much. I'd love it if someone with a talent for art and the technical know-how could do a DVD and/or blu-ray cover for a two-disc case showcasing both!

the ultimate "SE/GOUT" combo pack! I don't suppose anyone would be up to the challenge?

The closest thing to a contribution I ever did was make mock up videos to share ideas. The only one I recall being used was the fix of the abrupt stop of the backward floating Millennium Falcon among the garbage. Though I'm still hoping Ady liked the lightsaber sparks idea, so that Vader's lightsaber hitting the floor would be consistent with the rest of the film. I also remember adding a saber-hitting-surface sound effect to go with it.

Unfortunately, I think just about all my mockups were removed from youtube!

But anyway, it doesn't necessarily bother me if names aren't added to the credits. I just want to see it released! Can't wait.

I've played about with the binocular shot. Here is the revised version. Make sure you watch the 720p version though because youtubes compression on the SD version is pretty crappy

http://youtu.be/HNfl0K3iRmA

EDIT: It still looks pretty crappy in HD. Here is a download link for the 720p mkv of this shot:

https://hotfile.com/dl/197542645/33e9732/binocs_revised.mkv.html

Thats alot better Ady. The contrast in the shot is alot closer to the original now, and the scan lines brings it alot closer also; however, the walkers where alot more blurry in the original.  Adding some blur to the CG walkers would better match the quality of the walkers shown in the original. Aslo, there was some vignetting around the original binoculars. Could you add some around the ones in the new shot?

I don't recall if this is already in the clip, and I can't view it at this time, but an idea I just had to maybe make the binocular feel "binocular" like could be to have the image start out blurry, go into sharp focus, get slightly blurry, then finally focus correctly, sort of like the auto-focus on a camera trying to sort itself out.

Love all the changes! I was looking out for the cockpit version of the flaps on the speeders, but didn't notice any. But honestly that doesn't bother me too much.

I don't have a problem with replacing the badly positioned, unblinking stuffed toy eyes of the Ewoks (indeed I suggested fan-editors do something like this long before Lucas attempted it).

My beef comes from his piecemeal approach to the endeavor (frequently leaving the old costume screw up in and replacing only a few shots with very little logical method to the placement of the new effect) AND naturally not issuing the original cut of the film, warts and all so we can appreciate ROTJ (1983) for what it is, a film made in haste nearly three decades ago.

Yeah, it would be so much better if Lucas and his CGI employees would have the attention to detail that Ady has, but it just isn't meant to be.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas released the unaltered trilogy YEARS from now as yet another way to make money, but I would never say it was guaranteed. Till then I'm satisfied with Harmy's versions.

nope.....my point was...Ady does it well and with consistancy, Lucas just messes everything up and adds new continuity errors.

I had also suggested that people were more critical of the rubber masks in ANH that the ewoks in ROTJ, therefore it makes more sense to animate something that looks a bit fake than something that was more or less fine to begin with.

My first point was that the article went out of it's way to not acknowledge Ady's blinks at all, while mentioning the ewok change to bash Lucas with. They could have at least compared the quality of the blinks, as you've just done, but for anyone who only first discovers ANH:R BECAUSE of the article may assume that blinks = bad change, only to download Ady's edit and realize he also adds blinks. Many people won't concern themselves with the quality, but with the fact that the blinks exist at all, because I've rarely heard anyone praise the ewok blinks, and rarely heard anyone disapprove Ady's added blinks.

I mentioned this in the ESB:R thread but it seems more appropriate here... does anyone else find it funny that the article bashes Lucas for making ewoks blink, and completely ignores Ady's version of the cantina scene, not to mention Yoda's blinks for ESB:R?

When Ady changes something he does so consistantly, whereas the ewoks (actually only wicket) blink in only one or 2 closeup shots (not to mention the eyes are totally different in these shots as well thus creating ANOTHER continuity error.

Actually, the baby ewok shown during C-3PO's storytime blinked, and I thought that was very well done. It always looked like a puppet to me before that.

Either way, Ady was the first to add blinks and that was always my favorite thing about ANH:R above everything else he added. I did not mind at all that Lucas did blinks for Wicket and the baby, I just wish he had done some for the others as well.

I just think it is amusing that when Ady does it, he gets praised, but Lucas gets hate automatically because people seemed to have made that a default reaction to his changes, good or bad.

No mention of originaltrilogyforum it seems.

Funny how the article bashes blinking Ewoks but fails to mention Ady's cantina scene or blinking Yoda.

He was another one of those dubbed Brits, so we can't blame the actor ;)

Originally I was against the idea of dubbing the actor cause I am not in favor of dubs for the sake of dubbing (it should only be applied in post IF necessary). However, since he is dubbed already, then hell, may as well do it right!

As someone said (don't remember who), you can conceive of part 1 as a low-budget grindhouse flick that enjoys unexpected success, leading to a higher budget and mainstream distribution for the sequel.
That was me. :) And after some thought, I could see part 2 as a critical success but financial flop, hence the (SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER-ish...) cliffhanger ending that will likely go unresolved.
I absolutely love thinking like this. Maybe another director, inspired by the movies his whole life, recasts the roles and makes his vision for part 3?

Do the current covers for these edits follow this alternate universe line of thinking? Don't mention "Star Wars" or that it's a fan edit, but that someone has tried to preserve these lost movies, etc.

Since part 2 ends with a major character in a black robe... my first thought was Anakin Skywalker, hood up, on mustafar when he first entered the seperatist hideout... a seed of an idea? I don't know!

If I were to say anything about the transports in the distance in the shot mentioned above, they appear a bit too fuzzy if anything... I know they are at a distance, but the shot does have deep focus, as the mountains have a good amount of detail to them.

Even so, I personally didn't find the movement of the transport coming out to be distracting at all.

I think it is just that we tend to focus so much on what has been added, simply cause we are aware something was added. A few viewings and I started to not notice it as much and focused back to the ships flying toward the camera.

When I found out that this wasn't going to be a grindhouse edit, I very nearly didn't bother to download and watch it. I really liked the grindhouse treatment in part 1, and just felt that another ESB/ROTJ fanedit using higher-quality sources was sorta pointless.

This was my exact original thought, but decided I would watch it anyway, you know...just in case.

Will get to it eventually...

+1

But after seeing the first one and Alien-Ate, I should have just known better and trusted that it would be a great edit! I have yet to check out Jaws and the silent Star Wars edits.

Just watched this. I loved how bold your decisions were in some of your edits (I won't spoil it for others). Let me just say... I loved how it began! I missed the lack of a grindhouse look, but I could see it as being the "bigger budget" sequel.

However, I'm at a loss as to how you would continue the story if you wanted to make it a trilogy. I'm assuming there are no plans to do so? Anyway, I loved the edit! Thanks for creating it and sharing it.

I think it comes down to that in ANH and ESB we're following basically the "white human" cell of the Rebellion. In RotJ all of the cells combine to make a united front to attack the DS2. That's the impression I get.

Good point. Lets see more color added! Lando simply isn't enough. An asian doesn't pop up till ROTJ. No mexicans to speak of in the OT. Native Americans can't even get parts in non-Star Wars movies!

I think the PT can finally claim one thing it does better than the OT... more race friendly (Mace, Bail Organa, Jango)!
