I don't think dialogue makes the stormtroopers more menacing. On the contrary - if they have the need to spell out even the most basic orders (blast them, stop that ship), then they really don't seem to be a really competent force.

It's a command structure....it's not because they're stupid...but because orders (especially in high stress situations) are always barked out....even when the orders are blatantly obvious.

Personally I think having them completely silent makes them less credible as a source of danger to the protagonists. Like I said in my last post...I wouldn't want spoken lines everytime we see a stormie on screen......but I think only 2-3 instances in the entire film where a stromtrooper says something would make them more credible. One to three word sentences only....like "yes sir" or "move"....that sort of thing.

As I already mentioned once, just the "yes sir" alone would be enough for me. It's subtle, short, and the most logical out of the various ideas for dialogue placement.

Talking storm troopers are more dangerous

As promised I did a mock-up of some storm trooper dialogue put in to stop the storm troopers in Empire Strikes Back from being mute.

Ideally some new lines of dialogue would be better but to show you what I mean and to keep some continuity I thought it was a good idea so I did it. I am not suggesting anything should be done of this nature for revisited but I would really like to see them talk again, and if they did in revisited well it would be great this video is a window to what could be perhaps.

weather or not you like it or hate it as a mock up, is not the point it's that at least for me they don't say a word and and I like some of it myself and am unsure also on some of what I did but it's more a demonstration than 100% solid suggestion.

Enjoy and discuss if you like, the link is below

https://vimeo.com/68900972

password = blast them

As a big supporter of mockups to display ideas, I'll give feedback on this.

I didn't mind the first few times the stormtroopers spoke, particularly the "yes sir" since it was subtle enough to work, but then they started to feel painfully forced, especially in the cloud city segments, such as "does anybody know what's going on?"

I doubt Ady will take to this idea, but as with any mockup, it's worth a shot. If I were doing the edit, I'd only consider the first part of the mockup, and then only as a consideration, not as a sure thing.

True, seeing Vader's landing shuttle isn't truly needed...

well said

but muddyknees, that wasn't my only reason for this idea. That would indeed be one of the highlights, but it'd be more than just that.

I was thinking it'd be worthwhile to have a panning shot (with the Lambda landing) showing several squads of imperial troops massing forward with more still roping down from an AT-AT. This way, aside from the walkers, the audience will be in awe and have a better sense for the number of imperial troops that were sent for this mission (more than just a handful that we see only in the tunnels), because the Empire did mean business with this large-scale assault.

I mean it does work fine exactly as it is now, but I always thought it could benefit us showing more (in this rare case and if done right). Just like we didn't truly need to see the Falcon flying through Bespin before it landed, but after seeing the SE Bespin up close like that, I thought worked great from a narrative and visual point of view - I'm happy that Ady thinks so too. The same could potentially happen for this other idea, maybe.

But who knows what all Ady has up his sleeve, so possibly this idea would interfere with an idea of his, in which case nevermind. Again though, it was just an idea that I could see working and would definitely welcome it if he did attempt it :)

I always thought there may have been more rebel bases out there aside from Hoth (which would explain why in ROTJ the rebellion suddenly has more than just humans in it). If this were the case, then the Empire's invasion likely was just a fraction of the power that they could have sent in.

Or I'm wrong.

I think having radio chatter between the snowspeeder pilots during the defence of Hoth could be an interesting addition. it would definitely give it some extra life and energy (on top of what is already there).

I think if there was any dialogue to be added with the Stormtroopers it would be akin to someone saying "Yes sir" when given an order, ie. something to remind us that there are human beings inside those suits.  Even then, I can't say it ever bugged me that the Stormtroopers never really said anything in EMPIRE.

A simple "yes sir" could fit when General Veers orders the snowtroopers to invade the base. But again, no big deal if it's not added, since the scene has worked since 1980 already.

Fortunately, we can expect ROTJ:R to have the "NOOO" removed.

As for ESB:R, the only dialogue I would want added would be any dialogue that was removed in previous versions, as has happened in just about all the OT in their various re-releases, unless it seems better without the addition.

Ady would know far more than I would, but it seems to me that there aren't a lot of audio changes needed. Other than the lightsaber strike on the floor that I mentioned a few posts back, there's the timing of the lightsaber turning off in the wampa cave that needs to be fixed, restoring the sound Vader makes when he is kicked off the edge by Luke, and... well, that's all I can think of.

While it seems that people here generally get more roused by visual suggestion for revisited... I have been looking into the audio differences and i think I have spotted a few things it seems that Audio does get skimmed over when it comes up for discussion...

I suggested to Adywan via mockup video that a new sound should replace Vader's lightsaber hitting the floor when Luke ducks and rolls down the stairs. I recall him saying he added something similar to the visual idea (a spark or flash from the hit) but I don't recall if he said he'd use the audio idea or not.

The Clone Wars would have been over for over 20 years by the time of the Empire Strikes Back. Why would they just barely be getting around to smelting things from that era? It made sense that the Jawas might have found the remains of one out in the desert after that amount of time. But not so for a floating gas mining colony in the middle of nowhere.

Good point. I'll give you that.

If the end result is unsatisfying for me (for this particular topic) then I can just fix that one part myself and have ESB:R the way I prefer. It IS a fanedit afterall. So I don't particularly care how it turns out as long as progress happily continues so the release can finally happen! I'm pumped for it.

Anyone else think Ady's just sitting on his hands enjoying watching another "great debate" unfold? It's been so long since there's been anything worth arguing over on this board that it's good to see again. Am I the only one who wants ROTJ:R to start just so there's fresh things to fight over?

I want ROTJ:R to start cause it will mean ESB:R's long journey to being finished is past!

can someone post a screen shot comparison between the two control towers?

Is the only difference colour? because if that is the case... this debate will never end.

Of course they used the same physical model.

I don't know about the rest of you, but this was all I needed to support my opinion that we see a random Star Destroyer in the opening shot to this particular sequence. There's my two cents!

The lizard thing could talk like Mr Ed.

Baby Luke and Leia could talk like Mark and Carrie (e.g when Obi-Wan hand baby Luke over to Beru and Owen he could say, "This just isn't fair!"... that sort of thing).

I like that idea. Or maybe have it be their thoughts, similar to Look Who's Talking. That might give more freedom to place the dialogue anywhere.

Lines that might be useful:

"I have a bad feeling about this."

"YOU fought in the clone wars?"

"There's nothing for me here now ('now' could be removed).

Perhaps as Obi Wan is riding up to the Lars home, Luke could be heard crying, followed by Obi Wan yelling "COME TO YOUR SENSES!" Then after he hands Luke over to Beru, Luke would think "boy, am I glad to see you!"

Just a few ideas.

Palpatine and Yoda could be dubbed with dialogue from the lightsaber duel between Saddam Hussein and Lloyd Bridges from Hot Shots Part Deux.

"Your powers are weak, old man, you should not have come."

"We'll settle this the old navy way: first guy to die, LOSES!"

Saddam may have lots of funny lines that could be used for Palpatine, though it's been a while since I've had a chance to see it.

I think it would be more hilarious if Lloyd jumps right before the tower gets taken out.

That was how I imagined it as well. I loved the use of the guy commenting on the radar display though! The crowd panic during the crash worked well too.

As for the skyline, since the shots are mostly static, it wouldn't be too hard... just really time consuming! At least for me, if I were doing it.

And the shot of Lloyd Bridges screaming "they're coming right at us!" And jumping out the window, just before Grievous's ship hits the tower.

Please oh please add in one of Bridges' "Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up smoking crack" lines.

I could probably work that in if I keep cutting back to the control room as the ship is coming down.

Maybe if some shots of Robert Stack's character talking Anakin through the landing?

Anakin's dialogue could be used as responses, maybe?
