The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *

Given that the Filoni-led stuff is going to culminate in the movie and given the stuff in this episode of The Mandalorian I’ve got a theory for where this is going. So my knowledge of this area of the lore is not the strongest, but wasn’t the Star Destroyer on Jakku the result of a battle between the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic.? If it is, do we think that this is all leading up to that battle over Jakku? Or did that battle take place shortly after Endor and I’m off base? If I’m right is it possible that The Mandalorian and the Ahsoka Show is going to lead to that battle happening in the movie that’s been greenlit? WHat are everyone’s thoughts?

The Battle of Jakku takes place about a year after Jedi. I suppose they could retcon it and make the battle happen latter on in the Filoni film like you say, or they’ll really downplay the significance of Jakku as the final battle between the Empire’s forces and the growing New Republic.

Seems interesting. I’m glad they’re doing more standalones and I’m glad they’re all widely differing ideas. Looking at the timeline, it looks very Legends-y which depending on your tastes can be good or bad.

I’ve never been too interested in the idea of exploring the early Jedi Order, but Mangold seems to be a good director and maybe they can lean more into the Tales of the Jedi comics in terms of visuals?

Filoni’s film debut could be interesting. I’m curious as to how all the moving pieces will connect, and I’m a bit excited to see Mando and Ahsoka on the big screen, even though I’ve sort of fallen off the boat with the “Mando-verse.” I don’t always agree with Filoni’s decisions, but he is talented.

And the Obaid-Chinoy film could be interesting. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Rey or anything, but I don’t know how I feel about her starting the new Jedi Order instead of Luke. That’s just something I’ll have to get over I guess. We’ll just see how it goes.

Unlike the other previously announced and cancelled films, I’m fairly confident we’ll see these films come to light. I also don’t feel like any of these ideas jump out at me. I’m looking forward to them, but I’m not particularly excited about any of them. Maybe as time goes on I’ll feel differently.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.
Time

I’m not one of those people who thinks we should just accept everything Lucas says in regards to Star Wars, our interpretations are just as valid, but I do want to add this in here:

“The fact that everything must change and that things come and go through his life and that [Anakin] cannot hold onto things, which is a basic Jedi philosophy that he isn’t willing to accept emotionally and the reason that is because he was raised by his mother rather than the Jedi. If he’d have been taken in his first years and started to study to be a Jedi, he wouldn’t have this particular connection as strong as it is and he’d have been trained to love people but not to become attached to them.”

(Also I cut this quote short because it’s extremely long. But if anyone is curious to what he says next I can post it. The point Lucas is getting at is: Attachment=bad. Jedi not acting on attachments=good. Love=/=attachment. Jedi have no issue with love. And most important in regards to the topic I’m adding to, Anakin fell because he didn’t listen to Jedi philosophy.)

I actually really like many of the ideas Lucas is presenting in all these behind the scenes interviews about the prequels and whatnot, but its a shame its not conveyed as well in the films.

What is going on at lucasfilm cancelled un canceling cancelled Star Wars films and announced new Star Wars films.
Time

For starters, they’ve been way too trigger happy to announce new projects and build up hype.

But lets look at every production issue they’ve had since 2013: (and if I’m wrong someone correct me please)
Michael Arndt leaves Episode VII, Rogue One has major reshoots and it seems to have had its entire third act rewritten, Solo sequels abandoned, rumored Josh Trank Boba Fett film abandoned (and any potential Boba films get cancelled with Solo’s reception), Kenobi film abandoned after Solo’s reception, Zach Snyder departs a Star Wars project, the two GoT guys were supposed to make a Star Wars project at one point, Colin Trevorrow leaves Episode IX, Kevin Feige’s film canned, Rogue Squadron from Patty Jenkins canned, Lindelof out of new Star Wars project, and last but not least, Rian Johnson’s trilogy may never happen.

I’d say this is normal studio politics and business dealings going south, and, because of the internet and obsessive fan culture, we’ve been let in on a lot of the drama, but it still feels like problems have occurred more likely than they should.

I’ve heard some say that Kennedy is a good producer, but not good at running a whole studio. A part of me also feels like this is what happens when you try to treat Star Wars too similarly to something like Marvel.

Either way, I hope this is just a way of weeding out unnecessary projects, and giving more attention to the ones that do make progress, hopefully making the films be the best they can be.

I actually wanted a post Rise of Skywalker Rey movie. If that was what was cancelled i’m sort of upset but i’ll get over it. Future movies have potential even if ROS disappointed a lot of people.

From what I understand the director of the project is still there, and rumors are pointing towards the project moving forward. So there’s still a very high likelihood it still happens just with a new writer. And since Lindelof was feeling hesitant about doing it, its probably for the best of the story.

(Edited to correct and clarify on rumored info)

Disney is missing out on millions of potential dollars by refusing to release a physical version of The Mandalorian. Their deliberate decision to make the show Disney+ exclusive is depriving people with poor internet access the ability to see the show. Even if Disney charges $45 a season, people will buy it so that they can watch Mandalorian offline, and truly own a legit copy.

I’m not even the biggest Mando fan and I 100% agree with this. Maybe when the series concludes it will be collected in one big boxset? Andor too.

It’s one big joke and I’m laughing.

But in all seriousness, I’m okay with this news. New Star Wars films (to which I really don’t think there needs to be any more) should only be made when a new film is absolutely ready and they have a story that must be told. You can’t just make Star Wars for the sake of making Star Wars. Not trying to be cynical, but I just can’t see anything good happening from the studio trying to force a story to be made.

And they should have never announced the films they did. I’m okay with the cancellations, but it looks bad on Lucasfilm’s part.

I don't think Revenge Of The Sith is as good as everyone says it is.
Time

I like the design of Grevious, and I’m okay with him being pretty incompetent. I see him as kind of like Yoda, you see what the character looks like and expect one thing, but the way they truly are is the complete opposite. Yoda is a weird little frog, but a wise Jedi master. Grevious and Boba Fett are awesome looking, but are actually pathetic.

If I were head of Lucasfilm, I would try to get the writers and creative team of Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance to make a Star Wars film or show. They seem to understand the balance between drama and fantasy quite well, and I think that series actually feels quite like The Empire Strikes Back.

Star Wars novels and comics review thread

So after 2 years of off and on reading I’ve finally finished Battlefront: Twilight Company! Light Spoilers

For a video game tie-in, it really does stand on its own with brand new characters and situations. Because of this, the story is actually able to delve into these character’s lives, their relationships and dynamics with each other, and isn’t reliant on any big named characters. If you liked Andor and season one of Mando, you may want to check this novel out.

Namir is not your typical Rebel soldier. He doesn’t fully believe in the cause, but war is all he’s ever known so he fights anyway. He has to learn what it takes to be a leader and a rebel. Chalis is a senior Imperial logistics officer who wants to prove herself to others, particularly her former colleagues in the Imperial ruling class. She helps the Rebellion not for their cause, but for her own goals.

The story feels out there. Most of the book takes place on planets we’ve never heard of, and it really throws you into the mess that is ground combat.

I did not read this in one go for numerous reasons and I came back to it several times over the past few years. I wanted to say the book’s pacing is pretty slow, but I can’t accurately judge that factor because of how I read it. It’s also important to note that this is Alexander Freed’s first full length novel, so I do cut him some slack.

That being said, I thought it was good and worth a read. (7/10 - 10 being the best SW book ever)

I think a lot of Star Wars fans online are very insecure or have persecution complexes about which films they like. Many of them don’t handle criticism well. When someone else says something negative about their preferred film or show or trilogy, they’re unable to just say “Fine, whatever” and move on. They take it personally and go out of their way to make those more critical perspectives seem unwelcome, as though they’re afraid it will “ruin the fun” for them. Every fandom has that problem to some degree, but it seems to be especially bad with Star Wars.

This right here. I had written something up recently about issues in fandom and this was one of the major points.
