Star Wars: Deleted Magic (Released)
Time
Thanks to Video Journeys of Los Angeles (Glendale area), who are actually providing Deleted Magic for rent at their store. Rental is free of charge (so hey, no Lucasfilm infringement) as part of their "local filmmakers" section. They have five Orange Cow titles now - Shorts Volume 1, Gods of Los Angeles, Ghostbusted Trilogy, Indulgence, and ... yes, Deleted Magic. I wasn't going to give Deleted Magic to them to rent out, but the guy didn't mind - he said, hey, Lucasfilm isn't going to come in here and shut it down. On my way out, he asked if these discs were any good. I said yes.

(Because I hadn't expected to give them that disc for rent, the rental disc is actually my master copy! Or what used to be my master copy anyway. Guess it isn't anymore.)

And this is off topic, but here is some of my recent non-Star Wars work. For my own films, which a lot of you have asked for with your Deleted Magic/Classic Edition/Ewok discs. Enjoy.

Star Wars DVD Covers

Here is a large collection of covers for Deleted Magic, the Classic Editions and Return of the Ewok. Enjoy. First directory all by me, second directory by Coov, Ruben Ortiz, Hallway Orchard, Sluggo, Gundrosen, and other talented people.

My recent work, inspired by Coov's work:

Colorized from black and white art.

Japanese "green" poster turned blue and more subtle, with Luke, Lando, the starburst and the top of cloud city retouched from the Australian poster, which I wish I had in better quality.

"Brushed metal" look inspired by Coov's work - with added snow and less extreme brushed metal.

Black ESB to go with Coov's black ones.

Here it is - a folder full of designs for Deleted Magic and the Classic Editions done by people other than me. Lot of Coov stuff here, I've also included his "Trading Card" set for the O-OT if anyone missed it. A nice set.

I am starting a folder in my webspace dedicated to the covers for Deleted Magic and the Classic Editions that I didn't create. Coov has created a lot of versions that then seem to be changed and replaced, so I'm gonna put them all up exactly as I saved them.

I've dug up the Deleted Magic stuff by Ruben Ortiz and Hallway Orchard, one by Gundrosen too.

Some DM covers by Papa Vader, Obi-wan Spicoli and Sluggo seem to have vanished. Wouldn't mind having those back for completion's sake.

Anyone I'm forgetting?

Well, I've spent the week Photoshopping up covers for my own films, and as you might have just seen in the Empire Classic thread, I wound up making covers for Empire Classic as well.

So, now it's time I made a cover for Deleted Magic. Oh yes. It may have been a long time coming, but here's an official cover for Deleted Magic.

I used Coov's template, and was inspired by his design slightly. Should go nicely with the covers he's already designed, and the covers previously posted in this thread, some of which I quite like and have saved.

I had planned to do a pretty complex montage of images, but that was already covered by the filmstrip at the bottom (a recreation of something Coov did) ... so I decided to keep the design really simple, with a "Life on Tattooine" feel similar to some of the earlier designs various people did.

I centered it around one really strong image, of the gang at Anchorhead - Luke, Fixer, Camie and Biggs.

This was originally a black and white image, used by Coov on his design. I liked the look of it as a cover, so I went ahead and spent ages colorizing it, trying to be careful in what I did so that it would actually look like it was originally a color image. I used a lot of tricks - I would color balance the bright areas differently from the dark areas, to give it the look of color film processing (where the darks tend to go blue or red).

Luke's face is from a different photo, a color photo. I didn't like the photo of Luke that came with this picture, so I took one from the Lars garage which I happened to have in hi-res. I put the floppy hat and goggles on him and voila.

The problem was that with this image, which was originally color, it became easier to tell that the other people had been colorized .... so I did some weird colorization to both Luke and everyone else to make them match better .... basically ruining the colors on Luke to make him look more similar to the others!

The image of Jabba on the back is a pretty weird one. I almost didn't use it, but I had spent so long making it that I thought hey, why not. I had a small image of Declan Mulholland looking at the camera as Jabba, which was taken from a signed photo I found on the web. I took that little image of his face and put it on a low-res body from the Jabba scene, then I worked on the body a bit and gave it a "burlap" texture so it was harder to tell how poor the body really was. I gave him some more hair which I stole from the photo of Fixer on the front. And then I drew eyes on him since his eyes weren't really visible in the picture. The result still looks pretty weak, and I think I might have made his hair too short, but it's nice to have him on there.

The font used is Big Caslon, which is the same font used for the subtitles in the film!

The Deleted Magic logos are Coov's versions.

The filmstrip at the bottom is basically from Coov's version, but I put a different type of filmstrip perforation around the edges because I thought it could look better, and some of the images were replaced - Camie, Jabba and 3PO ripping the sign off were replaced with better versions, and after trying a picture of Luke's bacta mask out (to replace the image of George Lucas, which I moved to a more prominent place on the back cover) ... I wound up using instead the controversial image of Luke and Leia about to kiss, from the Empire trailer.

Yep. We've got two deleted Leia kisses here, and one is with Luke. No wonder Han and Jenny seem a little confused/nervous.

Classic Edition: The Empire Strikes Back by Ocpmovie (Released)
Time
Okay, I thought it was high time I put my word in on the whole cover thing.

So, here are some official covers created in the Coov mold.

I really wanted the Japanese-derived poster to be on these covers in good quality. But all I had was the original Japanese version, before some important retouching was done to Luke, Lando, and Cloud City. So my first step was to take the Japanese version (which was posted here in good quality) and put in Luke and Lando's faces, the top of Cloud City and the starburst from a low-quality version of the Australian poster.

The quality was poor, so I spent a LONG time retouching Luke and Lando's faces until they looked passable. The results were lovely.

Large version:
http://orangecow.org/starwars/swcovers-ocp/esbnewbigweb.jpg

As you can see, once again I've changed the original greenish color scheme to be more blue and inviting. A really classy poster.

I now had the raw materials to create new covers for the film.

Large:

First I created a cover based on Coov's "brushed metal" design. I decided to downplay the "brushed metal" look a bit, as I wanted the text to be as easy to read as possible. The metal became less extreme, and I also added a snowscape to the back cover to give it more of a Hoth feel, and make the text stand out more against the white.

Large:

Here's the simple, classic black look. I added a slight halo effect around all the text and the Empire logo, to make it all seem like it was very slightly glowing. The effect is subtle though.

Here's the new disc art, using the higher quality version of the poster. Much clearer and much better. The figures are also larger.

There y'go!

A local video rental place here in L.A. called Video Journeys rents out movies by local filmmakers - a free rental for one day - and lets you give them your films to be included. So I'm going ahead and designing Amaray case art for even some slightly obscure Orange Cow movies, just so I can get more of my movies on the shelf.

Amaray and disc art exists for Indulgence and Ghostbusted. Ask about it and ye shall recieve.

This is off topic, but some of you requested some of my own movies with your copies of Deleted Magic or the Classic Editions, so I thought I might as well post the official Amaray art for one of my non-Star Wars movies as well.

This is the Amaray art for Gods of Los Angeles. Completed it yesterday.
