I’d like to announce that my next project is a restoration of the rarely-seen animated classic The Thief and the Cobbler, created by Richard Williams, who animated Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

UPDATE: – Complete on DVD as of May 2006! Watch the entire film on Youtube! Download the DVD at Demonoid via torrent for free!
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=55EE5872FE454FBA

Mark II revised version available as of August 2006, direct from the author.

I’d like to thank Baby Hum, Stanch and Chris Sobieniak, among others, for their help in procuring the necessary materials. I’ve just looked at them and was inspired all over again by this classic film.

I know that many of you will not have heard of this film, and so it doesn’t sound as interesting to you as Star Wars, which everyone knows.

But this edit needs to be done. Unlike Star Wars, the film has never been seen the way it was intended to be seen. It was recut to death by Disney in an effort to destroy it, and is not well known even today.

I consider it a public service to restore Richard Williams’ original vision, on which he spent 26 years. Those who have never heard of this film, maybe you’ll discover it in my cut.

Here we are then. The Thief and the Cobbler. Recobbled Director’s Cut.

Here’s the text, for those of you who want to attempt your own.

It is written among the limitless constellations of the celestial heavens, and in the depths of the emerald seas, and upon every grain of sand in the vast deserts, that the world which we see is an outward and visible dream, of an inward and invisible reality … Once upon a time there was a golden city. In the centre of the golden city, atop the tallest minaret, were three golden balls. The ancients had prophesied that if the three golden balls were ever taken away, harmony would yield to discord, and the city would fall to destruction and death. But… the mystics had also foretold that the city might be saved by the simplest soul with the smallest and simplest of things. In the city there dwelt a lowly shoemaker, who was known as Tack the Cobbler. Also in the city… existed a Thief, who shall be … nameless.

“ANIMATION AMONG THE MOST GLORIOUS AND LIVELY
EVER CREATED!” - The New York Times

Restoration and cover artwork by Garrett Gilchrist

For the first time ever on video, enjoy the original version of this lost animation classic, written and directed by three-time Academy Award winning
animator Richard Williams (animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit). Nearly 30 years in the making, a labor of love by a team of animation greats, this was to be the masterpiece of Williams’ career, perhaps the most ambitious independent animated film ever conceived. The film was the inspiration for Disney‘s film Aladdin, which proved to be its undoing. After over two decades of work, the film was taken away from Williams when he couldn’t meet his deadline. It was eventually bought by Disney, recut and destroyed. It has never been seen the way it was intended to be seen … until now. Based on Williams’ original workprint, missing scenes have been restored using storyboards and unfinished
animation. Restored to its true form, this lost
classic has finally been found - for you at home.

Directed by Richard Williams Screenplay by Richard
Williams and Margaret French Master animator Ken Harris
Produced by Imogen Sutton and Richard Williams

THINGS WE DON’T HAVE –

The Little Island
Love Me, Love Me, Love ME
The Dermis Probe
The Story of the Motorcar Engine
A Lecture on Man
Circus Drawings
Pubs and Beaches
The Sailor and the Devil
I Vor Pittfalks, The Universal Confidence Man (not completed)
Anything from the various forms of the Nasrudin/Nasruddin film

Appearance on The BBC’s Do It Yourself Film Animation Show, as mentioned earlier - with guest host Bob Godfrey … any other TV appearances not mentioned.

I wonder if any of his Oscar wins still exist, too!

Documentaries with Richard I’ve never seen:

Who Made Roger Rabbit (2002)

Title sequences I’ve never seen …

Don’t Drink the Water (Morris) (animated sequences)
Every Home Should Have One (1970)
Prudence and the Pill (1968)
The Spy with a Cold Nose (1966)

IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE, OR ANYTHING NOT LISTED OR RARE, OR ANY PRESS CLIPPINGS OR ANYTHING, LET ME KNOW!

As this project has progressed … well, you’ll read in the thread, but we’re now in touch with many animators who worked on the film and approve of what we’re doing.

Future plans – A book is being written, by us, on this film, and a documentary being made. We’re trying to gather as much information as possible.

Let us know if you’ve got anything!

IT'S DONE!

HAHAHAHAH ...

It's finally done and all in sync.

When I said I was guessing, looking at it and saying, well, it goes out of sync at the dual layer break point, and I think (only from looking at it) it's by 7 frames ...

I was completely right. It WAS seven frames. (I've got a good eye, don't I?) The resulting version stayed in sync throughout.

I will still watch it a few times at the parts I don't usually watch it, to see if it goes horribly out of sync anywhere ... but I think it's DONE.

I will start burning copies rightaway.

Classic Edition: Return of the Jedi by Ocpmovie (Released)

Well, Jambe Davdar has made a disc called Building Empire that is basically Empire done in a Deleted Magic style ....

It's a very good disc, so check it out. I've actually given him a long list of notes to try and improve it for a second release. So we'll see.

Here is the list of my SW releases.

Deleted Magic
Star Wars: Classic Edition
The Empire Strikes Back: Classic Edition (Single Layer - Dual Layer also exists)
Return of the Jedi: Classic Edition (Single Layer)
Return of the Jedi: Classic Edition (Dual Layer)
Return of the Ewok and Other Little Films
Special Edition Hype

Also --

1975 Auditions Remix

Kind of worth counting. And I did a slight remix of Moth3r's first ANH (to fix an aspect ratio problem) which had the antismoking ad at the beginning, but that's not worth counting.

@(*#@(&#(@&*!!

So after a long week of work I come back to do the final syncing ...

And after three tries today it's STILL not in sync. It goes out of sync at what used to be the DL break point. (Han says "I've got an idea.")

None of this makes any sense, but it stopped making sense a long time ago, so I'll just roll with it.

I'm just guessing now. I look at the playback, say, oh, I think that's ahead by seven frames ... and then wait 40 minutes for it to mux before seeing if I was right.

.....

@*#&@*(#^@!!

I SHOULD be right. We'll see. Maybe this will be the mux that finally gets it right.

***//BUILDING EMPIRE\\: PAL & NTSC DVD - NEW EDITION NOW ONLINE! ***
Time
Okay, I've written a lengthy - LENGTHY! - email to Jambe, giving my notes on Building Empire as well as explaining at LENGTH some of the underlying philosophy and "rules" I came up with when I was doing my own Star Wars edit, which you might have seen, and which I hope will help him with his edit of Jedi, and hopefully making a final version of Empire.

I won't post this here. If anyone reeeally needs to read it - like, say, you're thinking of doing your own edit in a style similar to Jambe's or mine, and are curious what was said here, email me at tygerbug at yahoo dot com.

Jambe's disc is wonderfully done, and receives my high recommendation. I hope he takes my additional ideas and suggestions into account and makes it even better ... but either way it's a great disc.

Idea: Selectable Optional Scenes on a DVD?
Time
Uh, it can be done. You just have to put the alternate versions of scenes in a different chapter. It's not easy to do, but it can be done.

It would only be practical for movies where only a few scenes are "altered." You can't have a lot of alternate scenes going on. So Star Wars is out of the question.

For a movie that's a "director's cut," though, it's quite easy to place your chapter marks and provide an optional short version which skips certain chapters, and slaps on one or two alternate scenes, say, an alternate ending. Alternate endings are pretty easy to provide, as they start on the same frame as the other ending.

I've just watched this. I'm glad that you did this instead of me - you thought of a million things I didn't know, didn't have, or would never have thought of. I was constantly impressed. Sometimes awed. Constantly wishing I'd had that Super 8 audio when I was doing my Classic Edition cut. I would have included a lot of it in my version - while watching I found myself seriously considering revisiting my ESB classic audio and redoing it.

I have a large amount of issues with this film, though ... I found myself taking notes while watching it on what had been done wrong. I suppose it's no surprise that I should have strong opinions - I was going to do this one myself, of course, and my thoughts are left over. You've made some crucial errors at crucial moments.

You had offered me a pre-release copy at one point, and I REALLY wish you'd let me see it before showing it to anyone else, as I could have helped you out with a few areas that you had trouble with. During Deleted Magic, I was constantly conferring with Mark Sluggo Johnson, who came up with a million things I never would have.

I believe this is a brilliant production, and with some easy fine tuning could have been perfection. I can list my thoughts, but I should ask this question first - is it still possible to make changes to the film? Do you still have the files on your hard drive? Can you retrieve them from backup? Anything?

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
I can see them.

The Ewok adventure posters in the poster book are annoyingly good. Some of the least interesting ideas for posters get the best artwork.

Makes me want to try a Return of the Ewok cover with bits of the various the ROTJ and Ewok posters. LOL.

A few strange omissions in the poster book though - seemingly because certain images were never made "collectible" as posters. Thus there's a lot of discussion around the alternate original versions of the Empire "Gone With the Wind" poster, the ones that contain Lando and Boba Fett, or the later one that had Yoda ... but you don't actually get to see them! (Aside from some crappy foreign repainted copies of them which look awful.)

We also don't see that rare, comic book drawing like Star Wars poster with Luke and Leia swinging with Superman like text and Leia in go-go boots. =)

And a couple of interesting images only show up as tiny afterthoughts on other posters .... there's a Jedi poster that looks kind of interesting, but is reproduced about an inch tall on another poster. (The same is true for the crappy ... Spanish? .... trilogy video covers we keep seeing pop up round here.)

These are verrry minor complaints though.

A wonderful book which cries out for a sequel just dedicated to unused, more obscure art.

You rule Coov.

The Empire one is my favorite.

Thanks for doing these - every poster in that book ought to be on SOMETHING. Well, not every one, but a few of 'em.

With that Jedi poster, I actually like the original version of that poster a lot more, the one that has a lot of extra characters and insanity going on. It just looks nicer to me.

No, but I hope Skot does! He's got all the stuff. He asked for my help at one point, but nothing came of it.

I only posted that lyric because I'd only just last night figured out the two words. =D

I actually emailed a woman who worked on the original "Wasting Electricity" ad campaign in Canada, which inspired that bizarre scene. Curious what her thoughts will be if she responds.
