Classic Edition: Return of the Jedi by Ocpmovie (Released)
Time
That said, I understand what Lucas was trying to do with his prequels. It's just that he was rusty, hadn't directed a film in a long time, and hadn't directed a film well since American Graffiti, which was a small scale piece suited to his then talents.

There are many parts of Clones that are interesting, and a few in Menace also, despite the piss-poor editing.

But they aren't of enough quality to stand alongside proper works of the Star Wars galaxy, like, say, The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Idea: Revisionist Silent Films...?
Time

I posted this at SA’s CD, but some thoughts would be interesting here.

We’ve seen radically altered modern versions of some silent films, such as Metropolis (by Moroder) and Nosferatu. “Genre” films tend to get this treatment more than others.

So, a heretical thought on silent film in general.

Modern Hollywood films rarely rely on production sound … instead overusing the capability for foley and ADR, using sound to hide problems with the production, inherent in the fast pace and unforgiving unionized nature of the Hollywood machine.

I know this is heresy to say this, but any studio would be more than capable of providing foley and ADR for silent films, making them sound perfectly natural, and not silent anymore. It would have to be done well, with great skill, and it could be.

Knowing that this could be done, would you be interested in seeing landmark silent films given this treatment?

Just curious.

So the world really is screwing with me lately.

CBS announced that it's starting a new web television station, called .... Innertube TV.

Excuse me?

The late Jim Henson and I would like a word with you.

Here's the intro from my cable access series .... you decide!

http://www.orangecow.org/videos/ocppresentsintro2.mov

(Innertube TV was the name of the unaired pilot for The Jim Henson Hour, one of my favorite shows as a kid. I coopted the unused theme song for my cable access series, figuring SOMEONE ought to use it ... and people took to calling it that.)

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
I think the 2004 editions are the true representation of these films, and that all copies of the original trilogy should be burned. Hope you're listening, George. You can still stop this! Burn the O-OT discs before they're mass produced! Do it!

THEN WE CAN ALL GO BACK TO LASERDIIIIIIISC

laserdisc. laserdisc. the cheat's playin something on a laserdisc. everything's better on a laserdisc. laserdisc!

I want this trilogy preserved with the best technology 1985 had to offer!

I'm drunk right now.

In pt. 14, we meet the Mad and Holy Old Witch of the Desert Mountain!

All right, I need to figure out how to do good conversions to DivX and Xvid on this Mac. Quicktime won't even do it right ... the version of Divx I have there is broken, nothing works on it. I think they took all the capability out of it to force me to use MPEG-4. Which doesn't give much compression bang for the filesize.

No advice from PC users please ... Mac users give me some advice here.

Right now I'm downloading the Create bundle ... again ... from divx.com and I'll let you know how that goes.

ADDENDUM - Downloaded. Installed. Found a serial #. Their Divx creator is a little doodad with no apparent functionality. Christ, I hate this crap! They design it to look simple, have no buttons, like we're idiots and are impressed by that. If we're creating videos, we don't want cute doodads, we want programs that work. It lets me select a few presets, and there is a "custom" setting that I can't customize. I click Preferences and nothing happens.

Well ... once I ask it to encode something it does seem to be letting me specify settings now. I just hate this cutesy crap.

ADDENDUM - Well, this is slow. Like, 5 hours for 5 minutes slow. Hm. Then again, I was asking it to really compress the hell out of this video.

Still could use some Xvid advice ... Xvid conversion for Mac. I have FFmpeg and a few others which have never worked right for me for most things.

I included that Clive Revill material because Williams' version of the scene is much shorter than Calvert's ... Calvert's contains a lot more material with the Thief that Williams had cut out, and I kind of wanted to use it.

It was difficult - the Thief scenes are supposed to go in a certain order, and I had to throw that out the window to fit them into what I was doing.

I thought it was kind of interesting to include a reference to Yumyum's mother.

I'm embarrassed by the whole thing, but that was the decision I made, so meh.

>> Also, have you considered using Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture during the war machine sequence with the thief?

Send me an MP3. Of that or any music you think should be in the film. Not much time left to do so!

And you still owe me one (1) pan & scan Roger Rabbit.

=)

Hurry with that, could you? In the words of Jessica Rabbit, "I'm running out of time!"

In another life I was known as a comedian ... even did a self-deprecating reference to Empire Classic in my standup act once (Live at Laguna Beach video).

I may not be funny there either, but it comes out when I let it.

Those who can't take a joke probably are the joke.

ADDENDUM -- Among all the fake emotion displayed, I'm very very glad that the Star Wars laserdisc is dead. The quality of your Star Wars laserdisc, particularly the NTSC ones, is awful, and I'm very glad that we don't have to deal with them anymore, even for the relatively brief "non special edition" segments.

Some people believe that laserdiscs have a certain magical quality. I laugh at these people. Some people will continue to do laserdisc transfers. I laugh at these people.

I'm glad that we can have the trilogy on DVD in whatever quality ... and work from there.

Call it the LID project .... Laserdisc is Dead, so put a lid on it.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
Sorry bout that.

Anyway.

Hintsville, baby, hintsville:

The shot occurs in what I call pt. 2 of the film.

If I had used it in my edit, you would be hearing Calvert sound under it, not Williams.

In other news, I'm gradually putting part 2 of the film up at Youtube!

Pt. 10: King Nod makes a speech, Tack and The Thief go snooping round in secret passageways, The Thief gets himself in and out of a whole lot of trouble, Zigzag comes up with a plan, Yumyum is on a mission ... oh, there's a lot going on as we begin the second half of the film ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCc35hrVFCY

pt. 11: Zigzag has a proposal for the king. Tack, Yumyum and Nanny are sent on a quest, with The Thief not far behind. Zigzag too is on a mission. And we meet Chief Roofless and his brigands ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHOfXs8psmM

In part 12, the brigands attack - and fulfill an order. Zigzag meets the Mighty One Eye. And The Thief is at it again ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYt2Lir1oEo

In part 13, Yumyum, Tack and Nanny climb the desert mountain. The Thief tries to get a ruby and learns how to fly. Zigzag charms beasts to avoid a death sentence.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHXdiGbLz7Y

Trivia of the day ... A Yumyum line that can't be heard in the workprint due to how soft the sound is. Turning the volume WAY up revealed what it is.

"Yes Roofless, you stay here. Guard the exit. We're going up."

>>I did notice the rough cut lacked the cross-cutting between the witch falling and the thief falling... is this going back?

No. It was a purposeful decision, because it wouldn't take the Thief that long to fall ... I agree with how Calvert cut it. Much more logical.

Little thing of the day:
Tack goes crosseyed for the first frame after he's gone through the revolving door and into darkness.

>>The whole Tack/Zig-Zag fight sequence, with the smoke all around - was this Calvert?

Yes. Everything from when he grabs Yumyum on his horse to the fight and Yumyum and Tack hugging, that's all Calvert.

Thus I've cut it down in my final edit because people complained. I used it to break up the Thief material.

(You can see it uncut in the Miramax and Princess edits.)

Williams had some similar ideas about having something involving Tack and Zigzag happening while the Thief was doing his thing, but it didn't make it to the workprint. (For the workprint he came up with the war machine almost stomping on Tack, which Calvert and I used, and an uninteresting sequence where Yumyum can't find Tack in the smoke, which Calvert and I didn't. Both are very short though.)

I personally reused the sound effects from the card shot, so I could use a Williams like soundtrack rather than a Calvert one. But Calvert did something similar.

>> I was wondering, and my friend Jeremy as well - will there be subtitles?

Nope.

Still, I doubt that people watching it who don't speak English will fail to understand the film.

ADDENDUM -- "Being unfaithful to the workprint" trivia of the day ...

There is a very minor shot in the middle of the film which was in the workprint, and which Calvert kept for his Princess and the Cobbler edit.

Miramax cut it out for some reason, and so did I.

What is it?

Matt Jones writes:

I've always thought the drawings of Brit illustrator RONALD SEARLE had a profound influence on the design of the BRIGANDS in THIEF.

The Brigands were largely designed by Corny Cole, who might have been influenced by Searle also. Very similar style.

Searle designed and animated feature called Dick Deadeye, animated by Bill Melendez & based on the operas of Gilbert & Sullivan.

Searle's drawings of the pirates look similar to the brigands ... and, this being based on Gilbert and Sullivan, features the Princess Yumyum from the Mikado, and an evil sorcerer.

Wonder if it's available anywhere. It was quietly released on video in 1991 by a small company ...

EDIT: Got it ...

Won't pay full price for it, but I am curious to see it.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Will Tasker writes:

heres the problem. These brand new DVDs will be using ancient video masters. Jim Ward, of Lucasfilms, comments: "The original films' video quality will not match up to that of the restored versions. 'It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006,' Ward says." That quote can be found in this article from USA Today.

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-05-03-star-wars_x.htm

Some of the worst official dvd releases out there for movies have simply been laser masters dumped onto dvd with no care involved. And that's exactly what we'll be getting from the company that at one time was at the forefront of producing quality presentations.

----

It seems as if this release is ... and I had had a sad suspicion of this ... intended to make the 2004 releases look better by comparison.

Oh well. Color correct the 2004 version and edit the shots from this into it, and you'll be fine.

It's been quite a ride. A lot has happened in a very short period of time. Exhausting. I'm keeping this project open for the gathering of information. We're still getting in supplemental videos, lots of artwork, I meet someone new who worked with Dick or knows someone who did pretty much every day.

Two years from now I'll still be available to collect info. And in perpetuity, as an interest.

I still plan to tackle a feature documentary on Dick and this film, and a big book project.

I'll probably move on to something else first to separate myself from The Thief for a while. I'm working on two animated pilots at the moment, as I've said, and more importantly looking for work. There's also a Bonzo Dog Band project I've been putting off. There's Howard the Duck and The Muppet Movie. There's things.

You'll continue to hear a lot from me as always.
