'How I Met Your Mother' recently did a highly ironic reverse negative TPM joke.

The response to this line of questioning is that the media is currently controlled by OT aged people, in the next 5-10 years there might be a shift away from negative PT references.  The cartoons and kid shows often lift visual stuff from the PT, comedies lean negative, the pro-PT references tend to be Palpatine/Sidious related.  I've got a list of 5k SW references, TPM shows up 58 times, Jar-Jar 38.  Most references still go back to SW.

So there's the difference. Would assume most consider that entertainment should have a higher initial expectation.  Like grades in school the 60% level is scraping the bottom of the barrel, and that's what many consider a 3 out of 5 star review.  66.6%.  (but if you want to add in zero, then 3/5 is 50%...)

But like the polling for presidency rating, anything over 50% like you have it, is saying that it is acceptable and generally positive.

With expectations that low, i'm going to go comment on something else.  Which is another value of public opinion which can't easily be determined.  The numbers who do go do something else instead of commenting on the piece of culture in question.

Alexd wrote : Anyway, as we can see on IMDB, the negativity is the minority:

You need to specify where you negativity line begins.  Since this is popular entertainment, shouldn't everyone like it, so if that's your line of measure then.  Above 7 = 33.8% Below 7 = 44.1%  When the Arithmetic mean is below the median, your stats are tilting negative.  Of course like public opinion polls for a president you can do with anything over 50% is winning the battle.  Also note that the weighted average is below both the arithmetic mean and median.

IMDB explains Weighted Average:

Weighted Average Ratings IMDb publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages. Various filters are applied to the raw data in order to eliminate and reduce attempts at 'vote stuffing' by individuals more interested in changing the current rating of a movie than giving their true opinion of it.

The exact methods we use will not be disclosed. This should ensure that the policy remains effective. The result is a more accurate vote average.

zombie84 wrote: That book is not something to throw around as though it has much merit. It's self published.

From what i've read, the book often rewrites newspaper articles.  So i'm basing it's merit on that he's read many reviews and the one conclusion posted is verifiable if we backtrack.  Sure there are passages I disagreed with before the conclusion but the final statement that most of the reviews were 3 stars seemed logical.  People wanted to like this film, and they tried to find parts which moved them.

Throwing the self published line doesn't seem like a good move btw.

Swept the razzies?

An award given to the worst movies of the year.  And according to the link below TPM was nominated for just about every category, but Wild Wild West took many of the awards:

TPM did tie for worst picture of the year.

It's on my to read list: "Anticipation: The Real Life Story of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Meance" by Jonathan L. Bowen (book is print on demand) has a chapter about the critical reviews which can be read at books.google: (pg. 89 but gets TPM centric around 92)

http://books.google.com/books?id=W1oyiL-Je6MC&printsec=frontcover&dq=anticipation+phantom+menace&source=bl&ots=1em8F3eQlb&sig=j8Jvi2MonMH-3lSxEpk-xgPLd40&hl=en&ei=YD-_TZa-HOby0gG0hKDKBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=reviews&f=false

(the book has come up multiple times in searches, so i'm giving it a favorable rating from the small portions i've perused so far, but haven't read the full book.)

From the conclusion of the chapter:

pg. 99 Quote: "Overall, critics enjoyed The Phantom Menace, giving it average to slightly positive reviews.  Few critics gave the movie under a two star rating, but few gave it it more than three stars either."

Didn't you read my previous post.  The key to knowing Star Wars media is to have never seen the movies!

Just kidding the real answer is the fantabulous make believe world called 'Reality'.  It's a scary place so very few verge out into this scary place.  But where it lacks, it also can bring you joys, like the Star Wars/Pepsi Making of the Marfalump commercial campaign:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJLuwfOaT6A&feature=channel_video_title

Now that's Real 'Star Wars'.  You all can learn something from this Special Making Of.  "The Joy of Marfalump" is it's not about the love of Pepsi (PT) or Star Wars (OT) but the fun of loving all six at once! (polygamy)

Trust me you'll get to that point where you all go 'huh'?

hahahaha oh my goodness.

*cringe*

*shake*

*sob*

If the 'Making of Marfalump' is not on the blu-rays, can you really call it a set worth buying?

the TPM coloring pic was posted to reddit recently, the Vader/Leia's been around for years.

Thanks for saving these from the endless pit of deleted data.

Will comment more once one is downloaded.  I guess regular users have a limit, so need to pause and restart every so often.  (hummm now it's downloaded 114% of the file... wonder if the restarts means it actually restarts from the beginning..)

FYI, If you find yourself screen capturing again.  There's a great program called Audio Hijack (mac), which will record the audio of any active application.  I've done the same thing you have, image capturing in one pass/application then audio capturing through another method.

This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD
May 03, 2006

http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/img/20060503_2_sm.jpg" alt="[ doc_title ]" /> Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the http://www.starwars.com/databank/location/deathstar/">Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the http://www.starwars.com/databank/species/ewok/">Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/hansolo/">Han Solo shoot first.

http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/img/20060503_1_sm.jpg" alt="[ doc_title ]" /> This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. The Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
February 10, 2004

The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely.

"We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience," said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection's Executive Producer.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will be available in a four-disc set that includes a bonus disc filled with all-new special features -- including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films. Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality.

"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way," Ward said. "We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

The films of the Star Wars Trilogy will be available exclusively as a collection and will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. Still, it's worth a look:

You all are so pessimistic. This deliberate creative decision makes *complete sense*. In TPM you had the Pod from 2001, and now in Star Wars we get Hal itself. Completes the Circle of References....  Ties the trilogies together...

*complete sense* is a euphamism for *utter bollocks* which is a euphamism for *I Only Care About Amanaman*

Oh and I hope there's a continuity shot of Princess Leia putting up and down her hood.

I'm almost done downloading the TPMVHSNYC

I posted some screen caps of TPMVHSNYC a page or so back.

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Theater-Performance-Preservations/post/486756/#TopicPost486756

TPMVHSNYC is notable as it was the source most news outlets used when reporting on the issue.  Although it lacks in many categories, it does have a wider frame size then other official or unofficial release.  Also learned from comparing TPMVHSNC to the second half of 'Z' that each print was hand marked up.  Not sure if that's a typical projectionist thing or some other reason.

There's 2 random play menus for the 'Chapters', and some other features.  and in the DVD_ROM are news reports from that time.  One of them has an early report on 'Fanboys'.  I'll post full details eventually.

Without people like you, future generations provably wouldn't have a privilege of seeing these versions.

Thanks, but i'm personally not doing anything you couldn't do as well.  Just asking people what they remember, and seeing where that leads.
