Sluggo wrote: It's too bad there isn't some group of fans who work to preserve starwars media before it disappears.

There are, just like people round here deal with video others focus on different aspects of SW files.  Problem is they are not going to come forward to the wider public as then you become a librarian catering to random public 'I Want' requests.

It's unfortunate that SW.com didn't attempt to become the goto place.  Would be great if they could somehow match any file which makes it's way online.  Would give them the ability to do quality control but also move traffic to their site.  Wouldn't have to be the official site, they could create a Library like site full of ads.  And as images surface they put out an equal, clearer or higher resolution version, and people would hotlink those images and that would drive traffic to the ads.  Might pay for itself and an employee or two.  There are tumblr blogs pooling photos of all kinds, the toy sites have pictures of every toy, a group which does book scans, John Williams fans save the soundtracks, Kuat saves fan films, online video hosting sites have all kinds of wonderful.  tf.n did a great job in the early years.  But the disagreements during the prequels split up the preserving files fan communities.

thanks, Alexrd for asking around for copies.

No, he had a habit of going back and editing his posts. He did indeed say "colars", but i think it was in another thread. he also said exactly the same thing on another forum, then edited it after it was pointed out.

That is true.  One of the earlier occurances of edit 'colors will be fixed' by him was when he was pimping the fake blu-ray cap.

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-coming-to-Blu-Ray/post/459732/

If no one was pointing it out then, then the theory that the original occurance happened in another forum, makes sense.

(the waybackmachine stopped archiving OT.com in 2009...)  Frink you could ask Jay if edits are saved like wiki-edits.

The 'colars' spelling is something you all made up.  Ken created:

It seems Akwat Kbrana is the starter of the 'colars' thing:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic-print.cfm/Star-Wars-Frames/topic/12246/page/1/

The 'fixed' thing was originally focused on the audio, then shifted to colors.

Here's some quotes from that audio round:

Oh he's got one, many works by him prove it.  But for whatever reason George Lucas believes (believed, could be over somewhat) that 'Family' is the be all end all.  He's said that the adoption of his kids revised how he looked at life.  Before the children it was ok to ask questions about the existence of certain things, but he drew a line (on this issue) and the Family aspect became something he would proceed to proselytize and not question.  His works/interviews show that.  Star Wars which was about a varied number of things, all of a sudden it became about one person.  Darth Vader Father.  The psych people might weigh in that this could have been an unresolved issue with his real life father.  After the car accident he had a falling out of grace with daddy-o, instead of taking over the family business he went into film making.  After SW his life style financially became stable, he thought his marriage was stable, so that allowed him the opportunity to deal with this father thing.  But consumed it, it did.  So major aspects of real life (adopting kids) and creative exploits (DV) became father oriented.  Or he's just capitalizing on a predominant feature of society.  Or as the saying goes, write what you know.

In some odd way the midichlorean thing could be seen as a good sign, as he added in something which did leave something up in the air, the Force/Midichlorean debate is kind of unanswerable as it currently stands, in my opinion.  Religion/Science.  Faith/Observation.

Insert super special clause about sperm/egg midichloriean formation here.

The children thing they attempt to explain in the movies as children are easier to train.  Control Control Children Are Easier To Control.

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

Was at the library poking around their databases and came across one for Russian news publications.  Had never thought about it but found an article which mentioned that SW didn't arrive in Russia till the 1990s.  Yet in this Russian newspaper database there there probably over a hundred 'Star Wars' articles dating back to the early 80s.  Weird to think that in Russia 'Star Wars' was a feared fake missile shield, while here in the US the person who created 'Star Wars' was sueing the US government over the re-use of the term.

Anatomy of Star Wars Masterclass w/ Gary Kurtz &amp; Sandy Lieberson
Time

You want this don't you.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/guardian-masterclasses/anatomy-of-star-wars

Dates: 14-15 May 2011

Duration: Two days

Location: Renior Cinema, London

Price: £150 (inclusive of VAT)

Maximum number of places available: 250

Star Wars was released in 1977 by 20th Century Fox and went on to become one of the most successful and universally adored films of all time. But what is it that made Star Wars such a successful and exhilarating cinematic experience? Was it down to the film's groundbreaking visual effects? Perhaps the age-old story of good versus evil captured the imagination of its global audience? What role did marketing and merchandising play in influencing its reception?

Now, over two days, Gary Kurtz (producer of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and American Graffiti,) and vice president of 20th Century Fox International Sandy Lieberson (producer credits include Performance and Rita, Sue and Bob Too) will examine the anatomy of Star Wars and offer first-hand insights into the development, production and marketing that made this film a defining moment in the history of cinema.

Paying particular attention to the film's origins and inspirations, script, visual and audio development, special effects, editing, pre- and post-production, marketing and distribution, Gary and Sandy will explore how Star Wars emerged from the mist of 1970s American new wave cinema while offering an expert point of view on the film's enduring legacy.

The course will take place at the Renoir Cinema in London on 14-15 May 2011.

...and WE get the bad rap!!!!!
Time

^ GL and friends were using the colorization issue to power grab more rights for creators.  GL and friends wanted the ability for the original creator to be able to stop the distribution of a derivative work.  They played up the notion of non-creators putting out altered versions. (colorization by a the rights owner in the 3 Stooges case) The US Congress disagreed with this notion and GL and friends lost that round.

So the colorization issue was more a smoke screen.  Lucas has never to my knowledge said anything against derivative works, done by the original creator.

Mielr: This falls into one of the most annoying comment categories: the "It's Lucas' film he can do whatever he wants" category.

This is true but only for a certain period of time.  These posters may or may not know this so you can teach them using GL's words:

http://savestarwars.com/lucasspeechagainstspecialedition.html

George Lucas said: "A copyright is held in trust by its owner until it ultimately reverts to public domain. American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history."

So you're just jumping ahead several decades in the preservation game.  Can also remind this poster that Lucasfilm has yet to remove the video so maybe they are ok ...oh who phucking cares, it's a troll.  I'd make a blog or post the comments somewhere where you can tag ads on them and make some cash.

...hey ho excuse me.  Off to buy StarWarsHate.xxx!

There should be an Abuse contact at these video hosting sites.  If enough comments from a user are flagged as not well received, they will take action on that user.  From warnings to account closure.

http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/request.py?hl=en

With SW back in the general public eye with the blu-ray, this will increase for a time then fade back into the norms.

THX 1138 &quot;preservations&quot; + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Probably old news but saw this in the AquariusRecords.Org weekly mailing list.  Film Score Monthly has done a repressing of the THX 1138 soundtrack.

http://www.aquariusrecords.org (samples on site)

THX 1138 (LALO SCHIFRIN) OST (Film Score Monthly) cd 17.98
Finally here! We have been waitin' for this reissue to arrive for eons (well, at least Cup has!), and it's so well worth the wait. This is the original soundtrack to George Lucas' 1971 feature length debut THX-1138, a chilling, near-future dystopic cult fave shot right here in SF. Although Lucas decided to handle this film's restoration for the dvd release in much the same unfortunate way that he did for Star Wars - namely, by adding numerous quite significant (often intrusive and questionably necessary) CGI 'enhancements' and revisions - Lalo Schifrin's soundtrack has aged quite gracefully, and this release even includes some numbers he composed for the film that did not make the final cut. We love Schifrin's work, and this is no exception. It is considerably different from his many other sountracks (Bullitt, Dirty Harry, Enter The Dragon), but then again this film is considerably different. Imaginative, haunting and incredibly effective, his score perfectly complements Walter Murch's innovative ahead-of-the-curve sound design (it would be great to have a cd of that!), and together they play a vital role in each scene and in the film's overall impact. Starkly contrasted with the film's predominantly icily sterile visuals, it's an ever-shifting aural kaleidoscope of grand symphonic strings, menacing drones, blats of brass, imposing choral assemblies, bursts of Latin jazz, early synthesizers and electronic explorations, solitary woodwinds, percussive African rhythms, and avant garde sound collage... topped with a deliriously giddy "Be Happy" sing-song jingle cherry on top. Richly atmospheric, melodious and dissonant, and deceptively unsettling. Highly recommended... and not just for film score buffs! Limited pressing of 3000, but it has been out for a while, so get it while you can!
