Thank you. Odd that they would manually add a second identifier to the second frame of this change. That second Chewie frames looks almost like it started to burn/blister.
I don't think it is a different take. It is noted in the 005 guide that some of the landspeeder shots the timing was changed. Best to use one of the Split versions to see the effect over time, it is generally two to three frames where the landspeeder from the original ends up +3 or -3 frames in the 1997 or 2004. The backgrounds were often stretched vertically as that made the lifting of the speeder easier to recomp.
See if your cousin knows why this recording is as it is. Were the orange letterboxing a function of someone playing with early VHS color chroming or as you alluded to a product of identification as part of the film making process. Not finding much on other recordings with similar traits, there's mention of a DragonBallZ recording with orange letterboxing but it's only for a quick shot. Understanding why it was created will also help your recreation.

There weren't really screeners back then. People did find ways to transfer the movie from 35mm to another presentation method. Versions on VHS and U-matic tape have been digitized by members of this forum. People round these parts are interested in seeing old recordings of these movies, so thanks for sharing your remembrances. Your description of orange bars is something we haven't heard about, and definitely sounds like a new variation.

Another possibility could be that it is a transfer of a 16mm to VHS/BETA. That was happening in the early 80s, a few of those have been mentioned round here. They are an equally valuable resource to those interested in the evolution of these films.
Feel free to mention what else comes to mind about the recording or the facts surrounding it. Sometimes one piece of info can link it to something relevant for someone reading.

Doesn't get into specifics of where the data goes, but would guess the servers are boxed up and stored somewhere, with the hope their value could be repurposed. But with most of the people involved looking to cut their losses, stuff is probably moved next to the digital equivalent of the Ark of the Covenant.
But then projects like this spring up: http://mxoemu.info/ So maybe as the world is downloaded onto everyone's machines, they can possibly be re-created.
Would have happened already, it's been sitting there for years. We overloaded the servers multiple times during the operation, that would have been the time to make a stink. At the last Celebration mentioned the collection to one of the Lucasfilm online people and it didn't seem to register.
