Well in a time far far away from this date..I was I little kid waiting in line for the movies with my mother, my aunt, and my two cousins to see Star Wars. The very first Star Wars was not particularly big on special effects. They had to use actual models made from different materials and put together mainly by hand. They filmed scenes over and over again to get just the right touches just the right special effects for that time period.

To people that see those movies today in there original form they don't seem like much. They have released and re released those three original movies over and over again as the technology is updated.

Shrug all you want, but a work of art is still being wiped off the map.

Were not denying that, but outlandish hyperbole and mearly sitting on your ass complaining about it is boring.  Less flair, more accuracy, more creativity to your concern might convince someone else.

Humdinger (2004 - 2011)

I have some initial answers and will be putting together a full report which will take a few days after I finish digesting some of what I saw and heard.    Please note that I won't be providing any additional info until I have a chance to write everythign up.  In the meantime here is some info for you to digest:

 

 

They used the digital files from the 2004 release as a starting point for the Blu-ray release.  They then made a lot of tweaks and fixes:

• Light sabers?  Check. 
• "Humdinger Glitch"? Check 
• Color timing?  Check
• Other effect cleanup? Check

 

 

The audio for all the films was tweaked.  It was readily apparent that it was a labor of love for Matthew Wood who worked with Ben Burtt.  Episode 4 got the most attention since originally it was a mono mix with no separation.  He went back to the original masters to make the new mix.  George Lucas and Ben Burtt were heavily involved in the entire process including balancing the score against the effects.  There are a few places where Matthew found some snippets of background dialog that was never used on the masters and he put them in.  I'll have additional details as part of our expanded coverage.

 

 

I had the opportunity to view some deleted scenes and WOW there is some good stuff there, some great deleted scenes and alternate takes.  They have not been "restored" and quality varies clip by clip.

 

The packaging is very nice. The complete series set is a book with thick cardboard pages and great art (I have pics of each page that I will post with my complete write up. If you opt for either of the three film sets its a standard three disc Blu-ray case in a cardboard sleeve.

 

 

As to the original cuts?  The company line is this is what George Lucas's vision for the films is.  While its up to everyone to vote with their wallet, In my opinion if you boycott this release because of that you are going to be missing a otherwise fantastic release.

Wait a second, but I thought there was discussion a few pages ago that there were new frames in both. Is it now confirmed that they're just the same master?

I was saying that these specific 30 second preview clip looks the same as the HD broadcast, just those 30 seconds.  Other sources might allude to changes (ie the AotC Yoda-Dooku pic) but these specific clips don't draw out that conclusion.

So what's known about the increase in scanning technology in the last 15 years?  Do the new machines capture info which past machines couldn't or has scanning technology more or less plateau'd for the visual field?  On one hand old scan's mean the film source was in better quality then it is today.

I’ve just had a quick chat with Matt Bristowe, Head of Production at stereo house Prime Focus after the “big” 3D debate at Empire Big Screen. He’s confirmed for me that all work is complete on the 3D version of Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace.

As well you know, the film is hitting cinemas next February. To hear Prime Focus talk about the film, they certainly seem to have done a lot of hard work on this one, considering the artistic implications of another dimension carefully

Seems early, but maybe because it's done now, that would give them time to run off film prints as well?

and do a 'save as' and in Firefox the option to use is 'Web Page, complete' that should take the html, css and images and put them into a folder and one html doc.  If this works for anyone, I can give you an FTP to upload them to or zip them up and use a free hosting service.  Please do all pages, as the one's i've marked as 'got' are actually from search engine caches and do not have images.
