Buttercup Valley, Arizona 1982 - Pics! it did happen!

ON LOCATION: BUTTERCUP VALLEY, 1982

Take a journey with us thirty years into the past. Before the world wide web, before internet forums and blogs. Hell, before Usenet groups and Compuserve. This was when movie spies were more like real spies. Belly-crawling with real cameras loaded with real film. Sharing physical assets. Speaking on the phone. Making meet ups face-to-face

A more romantic, if now largely forgotten, time.

It was the Spring of 1982. In the Southern California desert region known as Buttercup Valley, cameras were rolling on a film called BLUE HARVEST: HORROR BEYOND IMAGINATION. A SoCal science-fiction nut named Mike Davis had heard rumors about the production just having gotten under way. He and his pals decided to pack up some camping supplies and go check it out.

The fourth website at the recent event:

http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/Hands-On-at-Lucasfilm-with-the-Star-Wars-Complete-Saga-Blu-ray.shtml

via: boards.theforce.net

Dennis Muren sez:

"Garbage mattes, definitely. That really messed up the original VHSes of Star Wars. And everybody thought that it was that way when it came out in theaters, and of course it wasn't, just the transfer wasn't done quite right. So I'm all for getting it the way you saw it in the theater. As long as the original version is always available, then beyond that, you can do whatever you want."

Here's an idea for a less evasive approach.  (but the original idea can be part of this, just wouldn't be the main focus, but people can run with whatever ideas they wish)

"Star Wars Condolences"

-- "After you've paid for your blu-rays, pay your respects for the versions which started it all"

can set up a twitter account, which people can write at along with blog/facepage.  Could create a web page which shows this stream of people's thoughts about the originals.  Then have supplemental info on the website which informs them of why the originals are important.  A section could point to relevant quotes, a second could show doubleofive's SE comparisons so people are reminded of the changes, zombie's existing articles can be pointed at, and we can let people submit banner ideas which could easily be converted to stickers.  A one page .pdf can be used as a press release / pamphlet people could hand out to people looking to buy the blu-rays.

I'd like to make a section which lists all the versions LFL has put out, with the questions "How many of these have you thrown away."  The industry should have a recycling/reduced price policy with old formats.

So people would hopefully talk about their thoughts of the old versions of SW.  Overall this idea is a little melancholy, and pulls a lot from funerals, but when people get together at funerals they tend to remember the good things and that's something which might be good.

I'm told that little visual issues like these throughout the films have been addressed - a fairly extensive list. [Editor's Note: The so-called "Humdinger" glitch in Episode IV was also apparently fixed.]

It's phun watching this travel around.  Plain as day, yet obscured, to bright lights big city... to demise all in little over a month.  Wish I had a google alert on earlier.

Would like to put out a call to whomever was at Comic Con and might have spoken about this item while there.  Would like to hear your story.  Did they just talk about it loudly or did they track someone down and show them directly?

If LFL were doing an exhaustive search through these movies, i'm kind of the opinion they spotted this before.  But you never know.

The Aluminum Falcon wrote: Was the Humdinger ever spotted earlier by another site?

After canofhumdingers brought it to everyone attention, I did some searches for people talking about it.  Focused mostly on threads from 2004-2005 which brought up errors in the set and didn't see any mention of anything sounding similar.  Most of the problems people were having were with their dvd players crapping out at certain scenes but the problem scenes were in different chapters.

Kind of amazing that LFL would recognize this weird fan activity.  And it turns out that they don't read these forums to frequently, which is probably a good thing, for their sanity.  but if they are reading, can the canofhumdingers get a free set?!

What about just printing out flyers and placing them in the blu-ray racks, rather than sticking stickers directly to the boxes? That's not vandalism, as it's not directly marring the packaging?

Yeah this is semi-more legit, make up a one or half page info packet and ask people to hand it out in front of stores selling the product.  But stores can claim these people are a nuisance and move you farther and farther away.

If you've heard of the 'Yes Men' (http://theyesmen.org/), a stunt they did last fall involved handing out during the day a post card which claimed "with this card you could get a free 'Conflict Free iSomething' Go to the NYC Apple store at 6pm to collect".  What they did at 6pm was have a slew of people ready with hand outs which discussed the exploitive methods involved in the production of the Apple devices.

Here's an article: http://gawker.com/5694967/apple-not-amused-by-pranksters-fake-iphone-site

If you haven't seen 'The Yes Men Fix The World' it's worth the time: http://vodo.net/yesmen

Having an easy to remember website location would be nice, but if a link goes viral, that won't matter.  We can also just start writing out the basic text of why this matters and what the campaign's goals are.

Credibility comes and goes.

Any website which is public and has little chance of getting removed.  The more created the harder it is to get word squashed.  The .pdfs can be made with combinations of phrases or just one phrase.  The more phrases the better so everyone get out your writer's cap and suggest anything.  Variety is the spice of life so from political like "Senator Amidala does not support this Blu-Ray" or "Senator Palpatine supports your suppression of the Original Trilogy in the purchase of this blu-ray" to underground "Sebastian Shaw has a Posse" the wider the opinions the better chance of drawing in the crowds.

I've taken part in similar campaigns.  One project was called http://www.freespeechforsale.com/ and was a CD which protest how culture is controlled, the CD was 100% recycled and according to most lawyers could not be sold.  So to be heard, the CDs were droplifted. (the opposite of shoplifting, you leave the CD in the store [more on droplifting: http://droplift.org/Copies were droplifted and some of the participants were noticed but nothing major.

We can make up the design and release a .pdf which is ready to print onto stickers you can easily get in Staples or other stores.  This is a form of consumer advocacy.  People download and print out at home, then go do what they can.

http://www.staples.com/Staples-Sticker-Paper/product_490429

There was a similar campaign, where a guy made up stickers which were placed at gas stations which stated 'Thank you for supporting terrorism' and had a bunch of facts about how they were linked.  This is another option for this campaign, the stickers could state: "Purchasing this Blu-Ray reduces the memory of an Academy Award winning film"  possibly too esoteric (and the Academy is stupid), so the 'This is not the 77-80-83 version' is a better angle, but do those dates register with the audience purchasing these in a store?  *EDIT* ("The 1977 Special Effects Academy Award is not present on this Blu-Ray")

Set up a blog or tumblr which is the hub for the effort, and see if blogs pick up the idea, and then if people print out their own.

"I feel like... Tidbits and “But I saw it at Comic-Con…”

I reported earlier that the “Humdinger Glitch” has been fixed.  There have been a lot of people inquiring as it was in the footage that was seen at Comic-Con.  I was told that someone from Lucasfilm overheard an attendee at Comic-Con comment after seeing the footage that “the glitch is still there”.  They tracked it down and had it fixed.  It was one of the last if not THE last change made prior to the discs being locked down for final release.

Feels like they are throwing out a bone.

We don't know what they used for these promotional material.  We are trying to get the industry (but mostly LFL) to use their actual product when promoting.  The confusion it creates leads to problems.

Another example of product confusion is with this HTF review they are providing screen captures which they say came from the DVD yet are at 1540x866 resolution.  The 2004 Star Wars DVDs were not that resolution.

Would your opinion of this review change if 'Ben Burtt' was 'Ben Burke' in first publishing?  The first comment in the HTF thread is now gone, and i'm left in an awkward spot, how do I discuss this clerical error when there is no mention of it's existence anymore...

You're looking at 4-6 weeks beforehand to get stock into the logistic and fufillment warehouses.

So this is 4-6 weeks for production, there's also shipping/distribution. Working backwards from Sept. 19, going with 2 weeks for shipping/distribution worldwide (seems low, would crates of disc be shipped overseas by ship or plane?), that's two months which could make the drop dead point for revisions being mid-July 2011. canofhumdingers introduced the Humdinger to the public's attention June 26, so it's possible if LFL didn't know about it before then, they had a small window to fix it.

A VT Op should have spotted the Humdinger glitch

One of the team for the 2004 was asked about the Humdinger and they were unaware of it. Yes LFL had 7 years to spot it, but with all the extra eyes of the public they just barely found it in time. I just don't think it's well known enough to have SW bboards influencing LFL work. I don't think in this recentpress conference anyone would know what the Humdinger was.

TV's Frink wrote: Seriously, I don't understand why people want to defend the 2004 DVDs.

It is fascinating how you've chosen this issue and timing to hardline. "All his life has he posted away... to the off-topic ...to the horizon." This turn of events is almost as fascinating as Adywan's blu-ray.com obsession.

Erikstormtrooper wrote: Ultimately a poor release is still a poor release.

I think the idea DVD-BOY is saying is they go into these with the best of intentions, but when that doesn't happen with something as big as Star Wars with lead times that go years, what other choice is there but be quiet about the mistakes and move onto the next task. The difference this time around is we will be able to see what they've changed between 2004 and now and get a better idea which were actual 'deliberately creative' decisions and those which were just 'opps dang... fudge's'. Once those are figured out, it'll be time to re-evaluate how people discuss the changes over time.

Might as well mention it here, but Lowry in 2004 was expecting to rescan the films for the future HD-DVD release: link via: boards.theforce.net

But the high-def digital material was fine for the standard-resolution DVD release?Yes. My guess, knowing George, is that maybe he'll be back when they do the HD-DVD

From the same article answer this:

captainsolo wrote:

Hmm...Lowry did talk about cleaning up the negatives...sooo they did work with o-negs?

Did George Lucas actually let you borrow the original camera negatives of his Star Wars films to do your high-resolution scan for the restoration? No. We sent one of our 6-terabyte servers up to Skywalker Ranch in San Rafael , California, where they loaded it with full RGB [red, green, and blue] data without having to go through the component output that tape masters would demand. We processed those images, cleaned them up, and sent them back in little packages of discs. The net result was that we never lost a bit in the process of moving all the data back and forth, and we were able to work on full high-definition-bandwidth imagery. It was an unusual approach, but we got some pretty stunning results.

corellian77 wrote: If enough people vote with their wallets and don't buy a product

Equating money changing hands with Voting is dangerous. Actions speak, talking can convince others, but this issue involves a little more and a bunch of luck since the resources are so scarce.

So this San Fran press event went down Friday, and there's no articles or blog posts about it yet, everyone's checking their punctuation on this one.

*EDIT*

Thinking about these 360 views of models and locations, you wonder if this is a test to see if the fan editing public can figure out a way to take those shots and figure out how to use them in people's movies.  If that could be figured out in a semi easy to use fashion, it would definitely speed up production on the live action tv show, something they supposedly need for cutting the costs but getting the level of production they'd like.  The 360 shots (if they include up and down, not just spin information, more of a panorama) could be dropped into shots.  they wouldn't cast the right shadows as they are flat, but... thinking out loud.

Yes it's frustrating, but they've moved the bar. (copyright laws allow them that latitude)  It's higher now, instead of asking them for a copy, the public is now forced to seek out an old film print, scan it themselves and deal with the repurcusions when LFL seeks compensation.  Or get copyright laws revised so that it'll be part of the public domain prior to the death of those who saw it opening day.  Both are challenges but not insurmountable.

The major search engines have a time frame option, so after you search you can say only show me results which turned up in the last 24 hours. (or a day or the last week, etc.)  That's how I found the korean list, I took a sentence of your cut scene list and dumped it in, at first it found nothing then an hour or so later, that korean page showed up.  So i've been doing 24 hour searches for new reviews/comments on this thread's topic and that, what I guess was a negative review showed up.  But it had already been taken down... The blog is sketchy, couldn't find any contact info, but posted a comment in the latest post (still hasn't been approved), see if he returns a response.  Have a feeling the site attempts to get ad hits by creating posts related to currently trending topics.

What's sad is that it was never picked up in a QAR at either the layoff, tape dub, encode or any subsequent stage.

Going to be interesting attempting to explain inconsistencies in these releases when most people will be completely dazzled by the new found resolution.

Let's say they did take their time with this release, what would have been an approximate date for last change?  Do they need a month for reproduction of 100k copies of a 9 disc set?  How many did the 2004 set sell?
