The reel change before the oil bath might be a few frames shorter when it fades to black.
I'm going to have to have a video to compare this, There's no reason to have it faded to black any longer, they already redid the fades.

This seems to be 4 frames removed.

DIF - Difference tool to spot visual changes - Current 2004 vs 2019
Time

First Test Clip : http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/SWDIF_480-Test_01.mp4 (31mb)

Ok with my machine only having 2GB of memory and me phucking up the order for more, i've stopped working with the full size frame and reduced to 480x204 to see if this whole project is worthwhile.  Seem to have figured out how to convert to the same frame rate, after a bunch of bad attempts.  This first clip focuses on the scene where R2 and 3po are just leaving the escape pod, people mentioned that the color of the pod lid has been revised.  And as you'll see in the clip, it stands out.

See the blue dot.............................................................^  (exciting, I know!)  /sarcasm /BespinJokes

Another noticeable difference showing up is in the highlights off R2 and 3po:

.............................................^

This could be a drawback of the blu-ray source, but maybe they've upped some of the highlights toward a whiter white.  This is also visible at 00:14 in the clip a shot of one of the suns breaking over a sand dune.  Looks like the sky's been tweaked.

Now the caveat, is i'm learning the ropes here with attempting to maintain quality while trying to get a result.  So maybe when I transitioned from the source to my working 480 file, some things got shifted.  Will hopefully be able to compensate in future versions.

Right now taking the source files and running them through avidemux2.  Saving as motion-jpeg and avi format.  Then taking that and reducing to 480 in Quicktime.  Can eliminate that last step in the future.

Now i'm wondering if the black can be matted out and the 'difference noted' areas can be de-applied?

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

We will never see another Star Wars type phenomena. People move on to the next thing too quickly now thanks to our culture being oversaturated with media, and the audience being very tech savvy (there has been no real movie "magic" post-Jurassic Park). Special Effects used to be wizardry, now you just take a course.

and now modify the above to account for Harry Potter.

or all part of the marketing strategy.  The more units you sell the greater the savings during production.

Alien Anthology is 6 discs for $69.99 [$11.66/disc] (originally $99.99 @ $16.66/disc), a 1 year old set.

Star Wars is 9 discs at $79.99 [$8.88/disc] (originally $139.99 @ $15.55/disc).  That's a decent sign of economic popularity.  I'd guess they can probably drop these sets to under $50, they'll sell that many units.

Here's a manufacturer: http://www.newcyberian.com/blu-ray.html

Quantity Unit Price (US$) Total Price (US$)
1,000 $ 5.20 $ 5,200.00
2,000 $ 4.10 $ 8,200.00
3,000 $ 3.98 $ 11,940.00
4,000 $ 3.70 $ 14,800.00
5,000 $ 3.15 $ 15,750.00
6,000 $ 2.99 $ 17,940.00
7,000 $ 2.85 $ 19,950.00
8,000 $ 2.79 $ 22,320.00
9,000 $ 2.70 $ 24,300.00
10,000 $ 2.60 $ 26,000.00
25,000 $ 2.40 $ 60,000.00
50,000 $ 2.30 $ 115,000.00
100,000 $ 2.20 $ 220,000.00

SW is talking hundreds of thousands maybe millions, so it might be safe to say, 2 bucks a disc.  There's some flip over point where it's worth dropping the price to 'X' to get that next level of unit production.  (but LFL is probably much more cautious after TPM era)  And for 2 million units, there might be another drop.  The advertising costs are probably greater then the discs themselves.

...and the round of articles over the last week saved LFL money, as they didn't need to do general promotion, the blogosphere and newspapers told the unsuspecting world the set was coming.

***The Official RowMan*** Release Thread

Questions specific to myspleen can happen in this thread:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Once-upon-a-time-on-MySpleen-NEW-Star-Wars-Category/topic/12652/

ISO is preferred, as several of these discs are already in the system (unseeded).  There have been issues with ISOs matching but missing a .nfo file, discuss that type of thing in the thread above.

Still a great set.

P.S. Errata
Unfortunately, The Making of ESB went out with a few mistakes. We hope to fix all of these by the fourth printing. The biggest one-and if it's any consolation to fans, the one that has kept me up at night-is that a double-page matte-painting spread of the Falcon in the book is actually from Return of the Jedi, not Empire; and not painted by McQuarrie but by Michael Pangrazio. A host of strange circumstances went into that error, but I take the blame. Another series of small errors occurred when the publisher replaced my screen grabs from the original ESB version on DVD with screen grabs from the Special Edition DVD; Del Rey regrets the error, too.

We try and minimize all errors by having expert readers go through each of our nonfiction and fiction books, but mistakes happen. It's some sort of cosmic law against perfection.
