Save Star Wars Dot Com
Time

Here's an idea.  They created the National Film Registry to preserve films the public recognized as 'important'.  How about we now propose the 'National Film Registry Fund'.  Using Kickstarter.com, people could choose any of the films selected from the Registry and give money to see that the print which was supplied gets the chance to be preserved in the method the Library of Congress sees fit, with the caveat that when those criteria is met that preservation effort gets put back onto the shelves or the public domain, irregardless of it's current copyright status.  (generally those films are all expired from copyrights original length)

I guess as an exercise, it might be interesting to run through the NFRF Kickstarter idea using SW, maybe set up a 6 month to 1 year window for people to pledge, set a maximum pledge (some proportion of the BR set or a common movie ticket price), and see how far things get.

Then ask experts like someone at the LoC, Lowry, Harris, etc. to explain how those funds would get used, and if the public could help out.  (could some system be set up like SETI, where the public's computer are used for processing work.  Maybe frames could be placed online and people could point to the dirt and some program would automatically take the info from the frame before/after to fix)  yeah that's farfetched.

Maybe the time to attempt the pledge fund part would be the year before the run up to the 3D releases.  Could also just be done with a petition, signing the petition says you contribute one movie ticket amount.

(the fan film contest, etc) Gore then goes on to say that GL is basically no different then the fan editors at this point. Both sides playing in the same sandbox.

Will have stats in a week or two.  (they are currently showing the week ending Sept. 4th)  There's probably a site which does daily, anyone know?

ESB & RotJ always had Episode titles.  Star Wars got it's Episode title added in when the film was re-released, in anticipation of ESB coming out.

This is an example of one of those caveats about what is the Original Version of Star Wars.  Some people do not want to see the Episode title, others just don't want to see the 1997 Special Edition changes, like Jabba.

As you mentioned the GOUT looking pale, this is another one of the things which the fans have attempted to revise.  There are multiple projects in the preservation section of this forum where people have gone in and color adjusted the films.  As my first viewing of SW was on a black and white Library Super8, i'm not a good person to ask what the films colors should look like.

There is no one original cut.  The film opened in a variety of theaters each requiring something different.  Two different film types (70mm or 35mm) and three types of audio (mono, Dolby stereo (optical or magnetic))  If you saw the film back then, it's down to remembering what theater you were at, this link can help you:

http://www.fromscripttodvd.com/star_wars_a_day_long_remembered.htm

Since we into the second generation of kids to not have been around back then, the general answer is to choose the best home video version created by Lucasfilm.  Because quality plays a big part in this the GOUT (despite it's shortcomings) is considered this release.  This is the 2006 Bonus disc release.  So track down a copy of that.

Once you've got it, then you can look into what the public has done to improve the GOUT.  This would be dark_jedi's V3, he's taken the GOUT, converted to the correct aspect ratio and added on all the various audio versions.

If this version you still don't find clear enough as in visuals, then you get the 2004 DVDs and look into Harmy's DeSpecialized version.  He's taken the highest version of the 2004 presentation and taken out the parts which were included in the Special Editions.

There are variations which people remember which influence which version they prefer, if there are anything specific then you'll need to let us know what they are and people can guide you to that appropriate release.

More RotS oddities:

For some reason the lower half of this establishing shot of the Jedi Temple has been modified, but not sure what.   Guessing that the bottom half was re-rendered, not sure why else it would emerge in this process.

Similarly, this Palpy shot, his foreheads ringing change bells:

This one's just square:

They seem to have wanted to lighten the area around Obi head, a halo of sorts, but in the DIF video it's showing up as really square. Here are the actual pics:

Starting RotS, looks like some of the Wookiee homes have a darkened roof.

recolored roof:

*EDIT*

The intro shot of TPM is shorter, could be another German crawl variation.  Since TPM has this 8% more frame (doesn't seem to be the case for all shots.  Many look shifted right, others the scale is noticable, others like Jar-Jar leaving the swamp later in the movie look the same) using this as a quick test to see how many shots can be done quickly.

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/TPMDIF-Intro.mp4

The yellow box is the 2004.  Have a somewhat close match on the approach.  Then the 2004 shot is extended.  The problem is the next cockpit shot seems to be 1-1, there is no lost frame.  So I jump back to the beginning of the cockpit scene, and attempt to establish the scaling of that shot.

Contemplating what to do next, just out a copy to look for scaled shots or progress slower with the idea of finding changes which wouldn't be apparent until after the scaling is done....

^ The top is the adjusted version? There's another variable involved, not sure what it is, but the background in the top version is not as flat as the bottom BR shot. The top also has red bleeding farther out from the saber edge. The edge in the BR is fairly thin.

doubleofive wrote: Very interested in ESB, as it would be the only one not given the new core treatment.

ESB is a different beast, from the DIF experiments, some of the ESB sabers completely black out, they are exact, but generally there is an overall increase in brightness to them, but it's not as if the cores were drasticly modified as in the RotJ examples so far. A different technique may have been used where instead of adding a new elements they've just selected the saber and upp'd a value or two. What you've done with this SW shot is what I expect was done on the ESB. Probably the same technic on all movies, just need to establish a little clearer what that process could have been.

The SW ones implies that it was a change to the whole shot as the DS windows get affected, maybe the RotJ has some additional selection.

*EDIT*

Can try working backwards, starting with the DIFF and see if the highlight increase can be removed.

There's something up in ESB, the close up shots of Luke and Han on the tauntauns, somethings up with the skys.

Here's experiment with the 1 pixel wide timeline.  This is the Obi-Vader clip, but only just the first 2.7222 minutes.  Here it is raw:

Basically undecipherable.  can read out the two horizontal bands of the untouched frames and some sections are lighter, so boosted the contast:

and well it's more interesting, not sure usefull.  Some of the patterns are saber swings, which is kinda neeto.  Can see some movement over time, and the bright spots are probably the core light saber changes.  The bright pinks at the beginning are the stormtrooper laser blasts.   ...one neet thing to note are the times the actual screen caps (in the small clips) brightens significantly but the DIF part of the frame does not.  also weird seeing the movement over time, the second row is Obi-wan sneaking around.  the next section being 3po sticking his head out to see what's going on.  still on the second row that weird moray pattern is han & chewie running down the DS halls, the overhead lights causing the pattern.  The last bright pink being 'Close the blast doors'.

Any ideas on how this might be useful, are welcomed.

doubleofive wrote: I'm not seeing the changes. I think its like the lights, whites just glow on the DIF. Are they visibly different in full color? Because they actually RECOMPOSITED the sabers in 2004, how could they already need fixing? ;-)

Generally the far spectrum of whites and reds, (probably because of the compression of these sources) visibly read in the DIFs, to a certain extent. What i'm noticing in this Obi-Vader battle is in certain shots the sabers become a little more vibrant. Which I suspect is because they went through and upgraded certain sabers (white hot cores), like in RotJ.

Here's a description of where I think some of them have been upgraded. They all follow the same pattern until 1:59 in this clip, Obi is doing an overhead swing. In this DIF file the saber's core gains a brighter greener tinge. It's even more noticable in the next shot except it's Vader's saber this time. LFL was talking about making the core's whiter and this looks like a case of that. (the next shot doesn't seem to have this core enhancement)

More core enhancement shots using this clips timeline 2:15 (this is probably the brightest example, 2:17, 2:22, 2:25, 2:28, 2:40, & 3:33 (distance shot). Shots in between, dim, making me believe they were unaffected for 2011.

*EDIT*
I'll do a screen cap of one of these and see what everyone says in the change thread.

Random selection video bits, commonly known already, but looking at them this way gives you an alt perspective.  For instance with the Wampa Arm change you can see how they modified in multiple locations of the frame in the sequence:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/ESBDIF_480-WampaArm.mp4

With the lightsaber fixes in SW, the change is a little more apparent, i'm counting 9 shots modified between Obi and Vader:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/SWDIF-480_ObiVader.mp4 (57mb)

Humdinger: (pic is excessive dark, quicktime defect) http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/SWDIF_480-Humdinger.jpg

Counted 11 Ewok eyeball shots when poking through RotJ.
