Idea: replacing the 'Crushed Blacks' of the 2004 and 2011 official releases...

For what it's worth, this is one of the few people who worked on a SW film and is willing to openly talk about what happened.  There are now two releases with this color scheme, might as well listen and find out how/why it happened.  Same thread from a later post about the 2004:

because the scans were already clipped -- i.e., slightly overexposed for video.

Difference Blended Movie
aka Mechanical Approach to Spotting Visual Changes/Variations Between Film Versions
----------------------------------------------
Star Wars Hexology 2004 vs 2011 Comparisons
http://www.archive.org/details/DIF-Star.Wars_2004x2011_480
----------------------------------------------
Purpose : To identify visual changes made to the film, between these two versions.
Process : Two films version are composited using the 'Difference Blending' mode.  This renders pixels which are similar as black.  Areas which are dissimilar show up in color and stand out to varying levels.  This is good for spotting smaller quicker changes, but not good for finding subtle changes like removal of garbage mattes.

"There is a lot of what ends up being 'invisible' fixes," agrees Huebler. "That's the goal: when it's invisible that you don't notice that something glitched or there was a mistake. That could be very challenging to get to, as each one has its own creative decisions."

Recommended Viewing Method : Not recommended to be watched at release size (470 x 204), double or make it full screen.  Also recommend watching at the fastest frame rate possible (without loss of frame display) 1.5x-2x for action scenes.  Maybe 3x+ for dialog scenes, or if you've got a great set of eyes and video card.

Note A : There is no audio.
Note B : 2004 Edit uses German HD broadcast from 2007, this explains the variation with the opening crawl and opening shot.
Note C : All times are in respect to these files, displayed in Quicktime.  Are not applicable to DVD or BR disc times, as the opening crawls modify the films lengths.
Note D : Insert frames - top is 2011, bottom is 2004.  (sorry for forgetting AotC)

How to help:
If you spot a possible change please note the IN/OUT points and let us know.

Do you remember where in the race they said this was?

Another thing they didn't fix is also during the race, as they swing around the seating area, believe it's the last lap, there's a medium shot and you can see R2's dome turn and pop up, this hasn't been fixed.

The interest isn't that it's Star Wars.  The interest is seeing how they take an old movie and convert it into some new technology.  The PT and OT in 3D are the same to me.  An experiment.  The PT experiment is a little less adventurous as they can go back to the digital files for 3D'ng the films.  (if that helps, I don't know, but would assume it'd be helpful)  The OT will take a different approach as they have predominantly 2D info to work with.  (the first DS attack is probably going to be more PT then DSII, as they'll be using the 97 version, which i'm assuming they still have the 3D info for.)

FrederikOlsen wrote: The guys at LucasFilm must be colourblind, then.

You are misplacing your disagreement.  We don't know specifically what went down when color correcting happened.  For all we know they matched the theatrical print and then George would come in and say, hey make this scene this way, change this sequence that way.

At this point, all that doesn't matter, the color changes have been released twice, they are no longer errors made by the color blind, they are definitive deliberate creative decisions, that's the way George Lucas and Lucasfilm want these films to look.

It's up to the general public to now take what's been provided and change it, or the public can stick with older versions.  Everyone makes the call, you decided to buy the new set, and watch Harmy's old version.

You don't have to, I provided a second option for contacting this individual.  If necessary do a whois on the domain, to get a contact e-mail address. (hint:psittig@calpoly.edu)

If Jay couldn't pay the bills for this place would you help keep it functioning?
Metafilter works in this fashion, and the side benefit is the fee keeps out nutjobs for the most part.  Not saying this will work for all forums, but metafilter's post quality show that it works for them.

It is of course my grappling hook video ;-D

If people continue to believe that every reuse is an infringement then people will say that they have the right to remove your video.  I strongly disagree.  (but I also don't use youtube, because of this bull shit, and i'm not a lawyer)  But in the cover of BR videos, they are able to remove a lot of other videos they don't want out there.  They blinked out fan films a few years back, and even after an apology, many never returned.  I recommend filing a counter-claim:

If you want press, you can ask Jambe to hook you up with the guy at Wired he's written for.  That guy might be interested in this grappling hook video situation how it was taken down erroniously, how that relates to StarWars.com blinking out millions of pages, oh and your despecialized edition.  Would make for a good blog/article.

Taking Star Wars back from George Lucas, one edit at a time
September 17, 2011 8:13 PM   Subscribe
So you've come to terms with it: George Lucas doesn't give a shit about you. Maybe it was the minor edits to the re-releases, like Han shooting second, or one of the recent Blu-Ray additions with Darth Vader shouting Nooooo at the end of Return Of The Jedi, or maybe you liked the movies, except for silly characters like the Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks. However it happened, you are pining for the early version of Star Wars you remembered before all those changes, or maybe you're dreaming of a version without some of the schmaltzy stuff. Dream no more, the Fan Preservers and Fan Editors are making your wishes real.

It started before any Star Wars films were available on DVD, with Phantom Menace being released to VHS in 1999. Given this context, the online leak of Phantom Menace before DVDs were available was bad, but the distribution of an "improved" version of was unheard of. But it was out there, The Phantom Edit, tightened up by 18 minutes. The Phantom Editor, trying to remove the negative elements in the movie he otherwise enjoyed, started something bigger.

Along with the desire to improve the Prequel Trilogy, there was a desire to get Lucas to release the unaltered Original Trilogy on DVD. With The Phantom Menace in theaters in 1999, Star Wars was back in popular demand at the same time that DVDs were becoming a household format. The bootleg market filled the retail DVD gap for Star Wars, with the general range in quality you could expect from bootleg copies of LaserDisc movies, which were the highest quality versions of the original trilogy available at that time. http://www.originaltrilogy.com/">Fans started as an online petition for the original original trilogy, the theatrical edition without the 1997 special edition revisions (and earlier edits). The petition site grew over time, adding a forum for restoration efforts by the fans themselves. In 2006, the original unaltered Trilogy (or original Original Trilogy, OTT) was released on DVD, but they were poorly done in the eyes of fans. But by this time, fan efforts to transfer audio and video from official Laserdiscs were under way, encouraged in part by the changes to the 2004 Special Edition versions of the original trilogy.

Some results are collected on the Original Trilogy forums, sorted into efforts to preserve the original original trilogy and fan edits to the six movies, akin to the original Phantom Edit effort to personally improve the various Star Wars movies. Since then, Fan Edit has come along and gathered "the greatest Star Wars fan edits", which is quite nice, because there are a LOT of Star Wars fan edits.

It's 2011, and Blu-Ray is the format to use. With the new format comes a new release of the Star Wars movies, and more changes to the films. But there's more digital material available to fans all the time, so why not make your own edition? Or you could make something that's altogether different, like the What's Up, Tiger Lily-like Geordie Star Wars.

yeah.  after that explain why there is a failed tv pilot which has a pop rapper getting excited about a puppet who is singing about putting it's penis into the vagina of a tv personality dressed as Princess Leia.  Almost all cultural debris rolls off the back of Star Wars.

the boycott is not about money, it's about people telling others that they've had enough.  Every release has this type of group.

R2D2: The OT deleted scenes are muted from time to time without any technical reason. Sound is suddenly off completely in the middle of a shot and on after a few seconds again in the same shot.

Some of the scene have the director (Kershner) making stage comments, if these clips got to a second level of editing, those would have been removed so the sound crew would begin to figure out how to patch or redub.  That might explain for the cut outs.
