Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)

They don't have to go to any lengths, there is a system in place called Content ID which will find similar audio or visual material: http://www.youtube.com/t/contentid then automatically submit the take down. But there have been other reports that some companies interns have been given the take down task, and then it's just whatever they are able to find in whatever time they're alotted. It could be Lucasfilm giving the mandate to these other companies, who knows what's in those contracts.

It's great that google has added: http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/removals/copyright/ but they've blocked many of their search tools from being used in the database. For all the advance the internet has made putting information up, it'll be a fraction of the time to take it off search engines. Maybe it'll be better with everything working as a

Sony Music Entertainment Downloads LLC handles some digital downloads of the Star Wars soundtrack: (Sony Classical label copyright 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005)

http://www.amazon.com/The-Music-Star-Wars-Anniversary/dp/B0013DC9XE

They only need to own a small piece for a valid takedown. So could be the Jefferson Starship or any of the other acts.

russs15 wrote: Before you get to specifics, I think a list of different languages from VHS, TV, LD, DVD, GOUT, HDTV, Blu Ray - OT and SE would be a good start.

Yeah this was more of an impulse topic as I had a specific instance. Had a similar thought along the way which was in draft a year or so ago so here it is:

---------draft----------

What are the different Language Versions of these movies? Audio and Visuals, Hearing and Visual Impaired (Audio Description) versions as well.

Generally : English (Anglais), Latin America, Deutsch (German), Spanish, Portuguese, Français (French), Italiano (Italian), Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norwegian, Estonia, Greece, Russian, Japanese, Thai, Cantonese, Mandarin, India, Turkey, Romania, Arabic, ???? (some of these may just be title translations)

As SW didn't enter the Russian market until the late 80s, was there ever a version done or was it created later? Same idea for Cantonese and Mandarin, as China's copyright policies often limit films going over, are the versions created for a TV broadcast?

Can eventually discuss the variations or split out each language into their own thread. For example - German:

Maybe reaching out in other SW forums (example: http://www.starwarsspanishstuff.info/), otherwise resellers like ebay seem to be the only option.

Here's some pics from a forthcoming TWC073: (not certain if it's a Rental or the 80s Alquiler : La Guerra de las Galaxias)

Subtitles:

SE vs GOUT, differences in timing?
Time

If it hasn't happened. To help you out, -1's frame data (NTSC GOUT)

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/frame-data-star-wars-GOUT-NTSC-widescreen-V10-now-complete/topic/9567/

and

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Shot-List-Spreadsheet-v0505-6-films-publicly-editable/topic/13403/page/2/ for location of the SE changes, is a possible start.

But yeah the hard part of the time values, don't remember hearing about. (but not upto date with many of the audio projects, who might have reused the SE to create an OT) Will gladly add your findings to the spreadsheet. This is one of the goals of the spreadsheet to have times and the ability to calculate alternatives, but it's just not that advanced at the moment.

Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Audio Visual Press Kit
Time

This tape is could be one of the sources Lucasfilm sent out to television stations. You'll be able to confirm that better once you get the tape, hopefully a label or something on the cover will have the Lucasfilm logo and some other legalese. (please post some pics) The tape contains segments which news programs could insert into their coverage. From a pre-packaged piece to small clips of Lucas and the actors talking and clips of the movie, many focusing on the Special Edition updates.

Here's an online version:

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

From this bunch the one that gets me is the McCallum, Lucasfilm has gone to great lengths to portray the negative as being abnormally degraded almost lost (pieces maybe), yet he says (what i'm assuming could be an overall picture) a loss of 20-25 percent, that's not that bad. There's the Vader/Tantive picture Lucasfilm typically shows of the degraded negative which is all cyan next to the updated version, yes they are probably showing us a worst case or an example of how far the film had gone in one case. This number is a sign that maybe things aren't so bad. This quote came from a SWSE press conference i've never see the full thing of. Would love to find it.

The other two numbers though are at least close to some of the other quotes. but the 109/110 is GL sourced in both cases. The other two (800 & 748) are at least sourced from people closer to the production. And this number may mean that every SFX shot is a redo, all the way down to blaster fire, which we've been uncertain about. Need to run the numbers...

Some more SE number quotes, from the Sci-Fi channel's 'The Force Returns' SWSE program (TWC298):

Phillip Feiner (Optical Supervisor) said: "Taking a look at the number of shots, optical, dupes and effects of over 800, it's a massive undertaking."

Also:

Rich McCallum said: "The color fading had dropped by 20-25 percent."

and:

narrator: "To update the film, Lucas added over one hundred nine new digitally created scenes."
