FOX issuing takedown notices to Sith downloaders
Time
Does Lucas's choice of distributing the movie as he see fit, have any pertience in this discussion? Really that's a significant factor. Society has created the copyright laws which state that for a certain period of time, the creator has exclusive rights to the distribution of said work. Sure it's extremely easy to now distribute media of various sorts like music of movies, but are you all really ready to say that just because we can, we should not give creators the right to control how their work is displayed or presented?

Part of this is public opinion, while you have media organizations printing articles like:

http://www.profindpages.com/news/2005/05/21/MN935.htm
Malaysia, one of the world's top producers of pirate CD's has seen the seizure of half a million Star Wars "Revenge of the Sith" copies.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4575633.stm
"Pakistan-wide sales are expected to be around 50,000 copies within the first two weeks," one leading retailer said.

http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/star%20wars%20pirated%20discs%20seized%20in%20malaysia
Meanwhile in China, unauthorised discs of the film are being sold on market stalls across the country for only $0.85 (GBP0.44).

So that provides the world view, closer to home:

http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/46923.htm
Anyone who planned to see "Star Wars" on the cheap will have to check out Luke Skywalker elsewhere after a Harlem raid yesterday netted tons of counterfeit DVDs — including more than 1,000 copies of George Lucas' space opera, which opened just two days ago.

and tomarrow, this BitTorrent story will hit many households directly, through media stories and potential lawsuits.

Now yes there are opinions similar to MeBeJedi:

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6457.cfm
One has to wonder why the focus is immediately put on to the people (the star wars fans) who are downloading and sharing this copy of the movie with each other, and not on the industry insider who is responsible for the leak in the first place or the pirate on the street selling the movie.
(cut)
It is most likely that some revenue will be lost because of it, but this time, the finger should be pointed at the media that made such a huge fuss over such a regular thing and simply alerted the general public that the leaked copy existed and even explained in some cases how easy it was to download.

http://www.technewsworld.com/story/commentary/43282.html
As everyone except the mainstream media knows, "Sith" showed up on the P2P networks the same day it opened in theaters. But the P2P viewing wasn't due to the efforts of an evil file sharer with Sony's (NYSE: SNE) latest pirate camcorder stashed under his/her grubby rain-coat.

Rather, it was because of yet another Hollywood insider leak -- not that it stopped Glickman from ranting about P2P file sharers, BitTorrent and anything else that came to mind.

Of 285 movies researchers sampled on the P2P networks, 77 percent were leaked by industry insiders, says the 2003 AT&T (NYSE: T) Labs report Analysis of Security Vulnerabilities in the Movie Production and Distribution Process.

...and it would be nice if i could wrap this up in a one sentence bow, but i can't.

FOX issuing takedown notices to Sith downloaders

Posted May 24, 2005, 6:08 PM ET by Jason Striegel

We saw it coming. BayTSP’s claim that they could track BitTorrent file swapping, the recent MPAA threats targeted at Revenge of the Sith downloaders, and an overall increasing presence from the dark side have been a few clues.

I recently received a message from a hackaday reader informing me of 20th Century FOX takedown notices that are beginning to frequent, oh, hundreds of thousands of fans inboxes. The letters are being sent courtesy of BayTSP.

I’ve attached a copy of the infringement notice as it provides some clues as to what sort of information is being tracked and how FOX, in particular, intends to pursue copyright infringement by fans of the Star Wars series.

Info Wanted: this is the best forum ever - which are the best preservation projects?
Time
As for live chatting MF.com has an irc channel which might be a place to hang out. Here's the general info: "server irc.nsane.net: 6667 channel #falconforum"

and here's some basics from [DFL] one of the operators there, on getting started:
If you are unfamiliar with IRC, you will need to download an IRC client, the most common of which is mIRC, available free at: www.mirc.com Just download the program, and follow the installation instructions.
mIRC is a pretty good client, and I'd suggest you install a reasonable script ontop of that to aid your downloading and protection.
failing that, the only commands you'll ever really need are
/server [insert server name]
/join #channel-name
(always read the on-join message for channel rules, and how to access fserves, request bots or pack downloads)
and finally
/dccallow +username
to add the provider to your safe list to prevent autoblocking their file sends
some channels require you to have a registered username to join them - it's simple type :-
/nickserv register help
for the list of registering commands for that server

none

Edit-->
Turned out to be a different individual, but still a good article:
Mr. Coates, glad to see you've migrated from the SWCutscene list. To get to know Mr. Coates check out this article of his: May 25, 1977: A Day Long Remembered

Web Video - Finding & Saving
Time
Similar to the TV Thread it might be interesting to have a thread which posts webvideo streams or links to web newscasts.

For instance there are some interesting streams from Cannes:
May 15 : Press Conference & Interview Segment

tv.reuters.com also has streams in their
Entertainment section : Star Wars Premieres at Cannes & Star Wars Mania Has Hit

Also seaching through: http://www.blinkx.tv/ has more streams usually of newscasts.

Anyway i'd love to be able to pull down and save these streams. If you know of a way, please share, also if you know of any good computer screen capture programs (mac 4 me) please post, I will most likely go that route.

tRWBT vol.1 Sounds Great!

Sorry for the short notice:
US : 5/14 : 12 noon : MSNBC : MSNBC at the Movies (repeats 5pm)
Might have an interview with George (very short, standard interview questions, a 5 minutes segment and a few mentions else where in the program)
ERRR turns out next weeks program is a full hour of RotS coverage... so
US : 5/21 : 12 noon : MSNBC : MSNBC at the Movies - RotS Special

If you want some really braindead segments:
US : 5/14 : 6pm : E! : in their """"news"""" show, they have a """"discussion"""" between one of the hosts and Chewbacca, it's as if they reincarnated the people who made the Holiday Special. for those who love to watch SW Hate, this is the segment for you, they choose to not get it, and then flaunt that mentality.
US : 5/14 : FoxNews : all morning in their programing they've had SW related content, "Stock Wars" and some shit 'facts' on Cashin' In.
US : 5/14 : 9am : CBSNews : did segments from the NYC Ziegfeld line. mind numbing horrendous schlock.

If anyone gets French Newscasts, they may have something SW. the C3 of Europe happens in Paris this weekend. Anyone know when the Osaka SW convention is?

WHAT?! the US has bad Star Wars programing?! Didn't you see the ONE HOUR SPECIAL on the Home Shopping Network dedicated to JUST Star Wars Watches. You probably want some piece which gives new cuts scenes or indepth analysis, phoooey...

anyway, MTV has some interviews with Georgie but i can't watch them cus they don't support Macs.
MF.com
If someone could 'save' them somehow, much appreciation.

G4 has had special SW mentions in several of it's programs this week, and the Original Trilogy Preservation got a mention by Chris Gore.

Star Wars: Deleted Magic (Released)
Time
Here's the text from the Ain't It Cool News Jedi Council Session mention:

Grand Moff Lebowski: So, there’s this website put up by a fan who’s gone in and scrounged every deleted scene outtake, alternate angle, behind the scenes footage, and he’s reconstructed a comprehensive longer version or alternate version of Star Wars starting with the very beginning legend from Journal of the Whills, going in to the Alternate Long Time ago in a Galaxy far far away, to the original Star Wars that originally said The Star Wars with the original opening crawl. It’s radically different across the board into such detail as the deleted scene when Luke is wearing the Gilligan hat and the binocs, looking at the battle above Tatoonie. There was no sound for that original outtake, it was all black and white scratchy workprint, and he took the sound from the radio show and very strategically edited in Mark Hamill’s voice to give it sound. It’s just amazing, he went through the entire film and plugged in all this deleted footage, and it’s just Star Wars, though there’s a little bit of Empire and Jedi footage, and it’s up now on the web, and probably gone by the time this posts.

Moriarty: I guess there’s a fair question there, which is if he’s not going to do anything with this stuff any time soon, should he get too terribly upset with a fan who does it with the sole intent of other fans being able to look at it?

Tom Joad: Any fan would replace this copy with the real thing when it gets out there. I don’t think it’s inhibiting sales of anything.

Obi Swan: You don’t think Lucas has ever lost a dollar.

Tom Joad: I find it hard to discount this sort of thing.

Grand Moff Lebowski: And soon it’ll be at conventions sold as a bootleg.

Windy Starkiller: And hey, TROOPS. TROOPS was awesome.

Moriarty: Well, I guess that’s the crossing over into actually being allowed to play with Star Wars that is the ultimate goal of these people.
