yeah non-LID = 2006 DVD. While we're in this tranistionary terminology phase, are we calling the non-LID "Corporate Preservation".

So what fan edit projects did occur using the LID transfers? Wookie Groomer Splits, Deleted Magic, Building Empire, __?__.

What we're the promising/interesting fan edit projects which we're proposed? I was looking forward to the foreign language WWII audio track for ANH, and someone was going to cut the PT (as flashbacks) into the OT.

I'm looking forward to the X0 Project. I'm of the opinion that the members working on the X0 have a respect for the films and that they will produce a preservation which will shine because of they understand the material. All the preservation projects have their +/-, but to adequately discuss them you need to see them, I look forward to watching. Take your time, do it the way you think is appropriate, with the resources you've got.

Original Trilogy.com in the Press

Weird press skq3w:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/movies/bal-to.starwars05may05,0,6751722.story?coll=bal-artslife-movies

The move is a direct response to popular demand, according to Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh. "The biggest question we've ever gotten from Star Wars fans is, 'When are you going to release the originals?' A Web site called originaltrilogy.com, in the last year alone, gathered 72,000 signatures asking for their release. We love that passion."

Somethings odd with the wording/paraphrasing but if John Singh is saying incorrect things about OT.com, they're either using this as a marketing ploy (which they figure no one will check to see if the facts are correct), or they just don't care or they are watching and we'll have to wait to see how their lackies respond.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Maybe someone's got a good memory, but there was at least one video clip last year, where George said he would not rerelease the OT. Anyone know where to find a copy of that clip? I think it might have been in an interview during the AFI tribute.

Also please post any old articles which state that George will not release the OT on DVD. I think there we're some articles in early 2003.

Help Wanted: compiling the Lego Star Wars releases - Help Needed
Time
I haven't downloaded it, but on mininova, there is something called "Kalak's Lego Star Wars Speed Run". "Speed Run"s are video captures of someone playing a video game to completion as fast as possible. There used to be blog posts about Mario Bros. speed runs and other old video game speed runs which found renewed interest because of emulators. (also the speed run terminology came about because you could play the game in the emulator at a faster speed because of modern cpu power) If this is what I think it is, this would make a great addition to a Lego DVD.

Speed Run videos of all the SW games (via emulators) would make a superb set. nudge nudge wink wink I'd watch them because i suck at video games and would love to see how the games played out.

http://droidmaker.com/ the book about the early stages of computer aided film work at ILM. (pg 241-257)
[here's a very abbreviated version of the story]
At the time computer animation wasn't part of ILM proper. They we're an advanced unit working on future projects. (to put things in perspective, they had just created the concept and initial implementation of alpha channels) So ILM had the contract to do the FX for ST2, and at first the computer division was not expected to help out. But they we're asked to help envision the computer interface design, and after reviewing what shots still needed to be done, decided that they would like to give the Genisis Effect a try. (The animation is 1,621 frames - 67 1/2 seconds) They had hired a guy (Loren) recently who had done fractal landscapes and camera work. (the computer allowed for a more dynamic fly through, not as easy to accomplish with models) Another member of the team (Reeves) invented particle animation, which became another important compositional element in the Genesis Effect. Motion Blur was also refined as a process and implemented in the FXs. All this work was being done on VAX computers. Also keep in mind there was no way to output the final animation, since laser printers didn't exist. Instead they filmed each frame (off a monitor) with a 35mm camera. Frames to render, took between 5 minutes to 5 hours. The mountains took a month of full-time rendering. (i think work on the sequence started in late 81 and was finished in April 82)

Most likely if it wasn't for the Genesis Effect proof of concept the computer generated shot in RotJ (Death Star/Endor) would have been done in a different way.

there's tons more in the chapter but that's the basics, great book, worth getting. Don't believe me read the reviews by Ben Burtt and Alvy Ray Smith (Co-Founder of Pixar) amazon.com Droidmaker page

I'm on a Mac as well and have similar results to Kaal-Jhyy with Netscape. The odd thing about Netscape, is that the links pop out into a new window. Netscape cuts the link images in half, might want to increase the frame sizes. (things vary between mac and pc and browsers)

Looking through the coding, some of the <frameset> values you have in quotes and others you don't.

I find it sometimes helps to indent subset commands.
for instance:
<frameset rows="A,B">
_____<frame src A> (OT.com deleted the tab spacing, so i've replaced them with underscores)
_____<frame src B>
</frameset>

Info Wanted: The Legality of Fan Projects

tlbauerie, Rikter posted that CleanFlick members are buying a copy of the film (DVD) and paying an additional fee for the edited version (DVDr). Rental places like Blockbuster buy copies of the films. So that form of compensation has been agreed upon, between those companies.

The debate by directors against CleanFlick-like companies, is that the director's vision is violated by these companies, and if the people who rent the movies have any respect for artistic merits, they should not rent movies from these kind of companies.

Here's the Soderbergh clip from the Bleep! doc on SW fan edits:
http://noneinc.com/tteesstt/Bleep004.mov

I don't understand why CleanFlick members feel they need to consume media which they object to on any level. The world has so much stuff in it, why waste so much time focusing on this 'crap'. In "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" there's a great quote about the United States and breasts, and unfortunately the quote is just as relevant today as it was in 1963. That's depressing....

In the "Bleep" documentary, Steven Soderbergh (sp?) mentions Star Wars Fan edits. (thanks Rikter for the heads up)

As for those Clean Films-like peoples, they operate sorta like a Blockbuster. I'm not sure of the specifics (i'm against the idea of lazy individuals who feel compelled to "keep up with the jonses" but need those works sanitized to fit their limited sensibilities, but i'm all for the modification of films to fit alternative viewpoints) but I think you buy a copy of the film through them and they rent you the sanitized version. So your buying a copy and paying/renting for the edits. They've got special equipment which doesn't modify the original DVD (that's an obvious DMCA violation [anti-circumvention, which is a whole nother stupid legality]), they've got a special program which skips and does simple transitioning live.

Rikter, can you fit your uncompressed "Sanitied for Stupidity" versions on a CD?

The l337 RotS trailer, was the exact RotS trailer (audio and visuals) with additional subtitles in l337 sp33k underneath. I think Lucasfilm's lack of understanding of l337 sp33k was the reason for it's requested removal. It looked like a duck but they couldn't understand it's quack so might as well get some free press and ask for it's removal.

Sluggo's mention of pr0n, brings back to mind how Lucasfilm did go after the anime porn "StarBallz"
http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/Pf/0,1527,9055,00.html
(Yet other SW inspired pr0n like Sex Wars (80s) and Spaced Nuts (00s) did not draw attention.)

The interest in Fan Edits and Fan projects is fairly dim (cultural attention wise) at the moment.

The concept of manipulating movies is still fairly new. Interest in modified trailers has become more and more blog worthy, instead of just being fun for the editor community. It's not illegal to edit someone elses movie. Fair Use is a broad statement which needs to be backed in court, if questioning of the validity does occur, but that doctrine could grant any of these projects as ok, under the right circumstances. Collage and Transformative Reuse, are ways to progress culture, if we let organizations take those methods away from creators and the creative process, society suffers. There is only some black and white after a court case, until then the world is shades of grey. The creators have to decide for themselves where they draw the line. Then if organizations like Lucasfilm or the MPAA complain, you can either agree with their actions and remove the material from the public conscious or stand up for reason why you created the project, some advancement of understanding of the material.

It's going to be interesting when a fan project creator does make a stand on their project and charges $ for it. It'll be interesting to see how this community deals.

After that there might be fan edits of fan edits. Disney didn't make up the story of Steam Boat Willie, it was a live action movie just a few years before. But society has fairly convincingly supported that form of creativity. I can't invision the project yet, but there might be a reason why the MPAA and others decide to clamp down on the fan edit community. It's a public opinion no-no though to sue the creative actions of a fan editor, it's just not good press when you think about it. How would you spin it? As for projects like DM and BE, only if Lucasfilm was going to do a similar release would it be worth clamping down. Maybe if the fan edits come out too close to release dates, that might spark some actions. It's something to think about periodically but don't dwell on it, waste your time by being creative instead.

Some memorable moments in SW Legality:

In the early 80s, after watching SW Rip Offs appear across the globe, i think something happened but can't find any stories of Lucasfilm cases online? (I thought i remember reading about them going after the Brazilian SW, but now i can't find that link)
Thinking about it some more, i'm probably mixing up the copyright infringement case Lucasfilm brought against the makers of Battlestar Galactica.
As already mentioned the Phantom Edit draws tons of media attention to the concept of fan edits.
Lucasfilm's spoiler policy conflicts with websites, T'Bone's "http://starwarz.com/tbone" has several editorials on the battles.
Lucasfilm endorses the parody segment of fan film culture.
Lucasfilm through a DMCA Cease & Desist, got the l337 RotS trailer removed:
http://nuar.lunarpages.com/video/SW_mirrors.htm
The MPAA successfully prosecuted the leak of Revenge of the Sith.
Lots of creative projects here at the OT.com and beyond seem to have been made and distributed without any "legal entaglements".

Most of the activities going on at the OT.com are undefined legally. The obvious copyright infringement like making one-to-one exact copies of releases is not encouraged, but the transfering of outdated and unavailable materials is appreciated. The later has few court cases to prove it's legal status. As for fan edits, the closest thing to a legal court battle, was the case of Clean Films, a religous organization who's members would buy copies of various films, and the chosen few would edit out material they thought the flock wouldn't like, and the paying members would rent those edited copies to watch. But that case was against a business, we're just individuals here. It's all shades of grey.

SWKid Settlement
Time
Vague report about the possible end to the Star Wars kid saga.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060407.wxstarwars07/BNStory/National/home

Mr. Raza and his parents this week reached an out-of-court settlement with the families of three former schoolmates they had sued for $351,000 in damages.
<cut>
No one would comment yesterday about the settlement, including whether it included monetary compensation.

However, previous proceedings in the case had included discussions about whether the families of the three defendants had liability insurance.

The families of the three defendants have varying financial situations, court documents suggest. Mr. Caron's court filings include a letter from an insurer refusing to provide liability insurance coverage, whereas Mr. Laflamme says in his examination that his father had savings of $500,000 from an inheritance.

The Attack of the Clones 1080i (Star Wars Attack of the Clones.0000.ts [0001 & 0002] ~11.43gb) makes appearances in the newsgroups. (a.b.sw, a.b.hdtv)

In Germany they are playing the PT in a form of HD, but the compression seems to be in a format where hardware to record is scarce. Previous discussions on the German HDs:

Revenge of the Sith has been "On Demand" since the beginning of the year in what i'm assuming is HDTV, haven't heard any reports of differences in this version.

Star Wars: Deleted Magic (Released)

Welcome to yet another Unwanted Convention Update:

Seems that there are now two more bootlegger covers:
The First is mostly black, it's got Vader on the cover, front and center, and keeps the DM logo which is over Vader. The back has a revised description which keeps a mention of Garrett. The guy who was selling it was from Los Angeles, so we'll call this the West Coast Cover.

The Second (Let's call it East Coast) has has a blue and copper/brown motif (because of the poor quality of the print out). It's most likely the "Official Star Wars Fan Club 20th Anniversary" Poster. (Poster Book pg.215) The back has a revised description with no mention of Garrett.

The old cover with the dewback is still around.

I had some conversations (polite and confrontational) with these folks and asked them to at least send Garrett a copy of their cover for his collection...
