http://noneinc.com/SWB-Crawl_Tests/

File name: SWB-Crawl-002.mov (H.264 - 720x404 @ 23.97) 40 mb

Here's a crawl attempt. Using Sluggo's pic, comp'd over the starfield from the recent EDITDROID v3. This version was primarily to reproduce the perspective. So this shows the progression, then about half way though there's a pic from the SW crawl for reference. From this first look, I should extend the distance fade off point, right now it's getting cut early.

Left the length at about 1:17, which is about the same as SW. Because this has more lines of text, maybe you'll want to change the length.

Also was the 'STAR WARS' to be part of the crawl? it looks it from BtS pic Sluggo also posted. but not sure.

So make suggestions, do you have music in mind? Also what format should this be made at. Not used to working with movie ratios, so provide details if you know them. Took the 720x404 resolution from the GForce and EDv3. But maybe this should be outputted at PAL resolution, since i'm guessing that's what the project is working at.

Bad news... pg 236

When Attack of the Clones hit theaters, the seismic charge caused a similar reaction in audiences. Indeed, when lecturing, Burrtt is often asked about it and the twang of the explosion (which he prefers to keep a secret). "When I go out and meet fans, they always ask, 'What was that sound? That was so cool,'" says Wood, "But it's the absence of sound that really is what makes everybody like it."

The other point which I had heard before was that the original SW mix was started and don't have a sense of the percentage completed by Sam Shaw and his team (Robert Rutledge, Gordon Davison, Gene Corso and six others) before the reigns were handed over to Burtt. They were hired to do the complete mix, but Ben's ingenuity eventually showed that to capture the right 'feel' Burtt's sound collection would be given greater importance. Shaw having worked in the industry before brought in previously 'canned' sound effects, a package called 'Edit-Rite'. The book goes into some of their contributions but quickly mentions how it was tweaked by Burtt. Shaw's team with constant feedback from Burtt finished the stereo mix, after that Burtt alone handled the monaural and foreign mixes. (pgs 35-41)

Also weird stories like the time they locked a raccoon in a bathroom tub and just recorded for an time as it went nuts.

The other things which stuck out was that Ben Burtt's family had a audio recorder as he was growing up and he used it to record movies as a kid. (old school bootlegger!) and this paid off later in life since he knew these old movies in a greater depth then the studios themselves at the time he was doing SW and was able to visit the studio archives sound libraries. trying to figure out how they did the old sound fx and how to improve in SW.

It's great, my first copy was defective the read-out screen failed. But there's a play all option, so while reading have just been letting all the sounds play. Two interesting things i've learned from the book, Darth Vader was originally much noiser, more like a droid. But that was reduced to just the breathing. Also Ben Burtt explained how at one point he was working on the only version of the movie and it got eatten in the equipment, that's what's probably caused the two ripped frames at the beginning of the movie and he officially states that the jarring when 3po and R2 are introduced is because of this incident. Another cool thing is the Bossk dialog sound effect was created without seeing the movie so there is an extra few seconds of work to listen to.

Who (if anyone) saw the Holiday Special in 1978 before they ever saw Star Wars?
Time

Recent Podcast with Bruce Vilanch:

http://www.feastoffun.com/podcast/2010/07/21/fof-1221-bruce-vilanch-interview-star-wars-holiday-special/

In the intro, they say that they will talk about that there is a Documentary on the Holiday Special in the works!!!! (01:20)

*grain of salt* haven't found the actual discussion yet in the podcast

Star Wars discussion starts around 14 minutes in

I guess it's real, it's mentioned on his blog:

http://www.wegotbruce.com/weblog/?tag=star-wars-holiday-special

The Documentary discussion is at around 20 minutes. Some students from North Carolina have spent some time interviewing people. Sounds like they are having rights clearance issues.

why the PR attempt at blowing sunshine up the garbage chute now, five years after the last film?

The Prequel Appreciation Society wasn't started by LFL, but LFL did latch onto it for the panel, don't know who approached who. The host of the event is the person who is retorting the RedLetterMedia TPM review.

For me the problem with liking the addition of Hayden, sure it makes the visual correllation easier to follow, but the problem is young Hayden is the one who fell. Shaw's performance is the Anakin which turned away from the dark side and should be the ghost. Seems weird giving screen time to the incarnation of the character which defines the side the movies are always complaining about.

SilverWook continued:

I'd be willing to bet any Lucasfilm employee who publicly criticized any aspect of SW would be pinkslipped pretty fast.

At CV most of the OT people -Kurtz, Daniels, Hamill & Fisher- all were vocal in different ways about the SW regime. (mostly just adult suggestive material, but some elaboration in Kurtz's story on the different directions he thought the series was going instead of what happened) Was entertaining watching the moderators -Hidalgo, Laga'aia- attempts to stamp out or steer the discussion.

When did The Empire Strikes Back become more highly regarded than Star Wars?
Time

At the time of your link, there were 7174 votes for Star Wars, today there are 320,631. The sample size is partly what's distorting the numbers and your point. Also at that time, IMDB was mainly used by movie buffs. Who most likely agreed that SW represented a shift in the movie going experience. And that brought out people to the theaters and supported movies as an art form.

Vocally the ESB camp has grown in polls like those, possibly because that's the general populace's opinion. With Star Wars having a fairly universal appeal. But for the fans who liked that universe, Empire is best because it continued the story without diminishing the original, and it also promised more stories. As an entertainment vehicle, the escapism of Empire allowed them to continue being able to separate themselves from normal life for a short time.

With Jedi and the rest of the SW vehicles, providing the rest of the story, and since GL has said that there will be no more theatrical SW movies, the fans have realized it's over and maybe since the ESB time frame represents their high point (the greatest potential for entertainment escapism), that film has aquired the most public appeal.

Because of the 6 film Saga now being the story of Anakin, the camp which only likes Star Wars (ESB's revelation being too much of a coincidence) has more or less bowed out of the debate entirely. Their removal could be another reason behind the increase of ESB over SW.

excuses why they think the PT is good.

So one of them is working on a documentary about the fandom split. I recommended that he consider looking into the other splits fandom has gone through. As CO has explained:

CO wrote:

If you ask a majority of OT fans, MOST of us readily admit Jedi is the worst of the 3 and understand its shortcomings

*and*

Atleast the fans of the OT will readily admit that Jedi is not as great as SW & Empire

This is an example of one of the fissions in OT fandom. There's also the camp who only believe in the original SW. Spelling out the creative decisions which lead to splits or how the audience changed sounds more interesting then continually reading this stuff and face palming yourself.

20th Century Mark wrote:

Just the fact that this has its own pannel

Hard to say if LFL is just latching onto this part of fandom or do they really believe there is need for this.

Had dinner with two of the panelists, both sides need to realize the difference between a concrete point, and emotional argument. No one can prove what the other side likes. By showing faults in their logic and statements you won't win the debate (since there's no conclusion) but you'll have the higher ground. Opss PT reference! Many Bothan's died to get you this information.

Amanaman Rulez+++++

Eitherway, most people involved in this debate agree that all the versions of these movies should be saved.

Laserdisc revived - pics added - Japan Definitive Collection & Special Collection (WIP)

On the issue of the japanese subtitles, so the capture can remain relatively raw and untouched, a subtitle stream can be created which is just a black box covering the burned in japanese subs. Should be relatively easy to create, and might satisfy both camps.

As someone trying to learn the language, since I know the movie really well, having the subs available would be great learning tool.

Making of Empire Strikes Back pushed back to October.

TheBoost wrote:

"It would be cool to make 12 (or 9 or 6) films"

This is part of the split between Lucas and Gary Kurtz. When it was 12 (1977-1978), the idea was to have different directors take a spin through the SW universe. When working out ESB and the Revelation (1978-1979), that's when things became 9. Kurtz spoke at CV how when he was around, the third movie would have ended with Luke walking off into the sun to search for the Other. During RotJ (1981+) that's when 6 settled in, as everyone got tired of working on these projects, so Lucas tied up all the loose ends and converted it into Anakin's story. Once all that was in place, that's when the master plan stuff started coming out, it's an easy way to give the phenomenon a mystic; via a master plan.

and at any moment, a new logic can be applied and everything before can be re-written. either when he's ready to hand off the reigns to someone else, or as he goes senile, that's when things will get interesting.

feel free to speculate how to go about this.

*EDIT* Makes sense that the Holiday Special might have been the deciding factor which convinced Lucas to stop allowing others work in the SW universe. But each step along the way Lucas clamps down a bit more.

Conversely, an example of loosening up would be Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars cartoon.

Scripts - Menus - Intro : Locations to speed playback
Time

Where do the Scripts (random playback in this case) get stored in the VTS? Trying to anticipate where they are stored so that the menus and other video material they trigger is close by to limit seek time.

In my case, i've got a sequence of an Intro, a Main Menu and an Options menu. And each of those has three different videos, so there's 9 choices. Each step in the sequence is preceeded by a random selection script.

Even though the DVDSP Outline shows the scripts and menus coming after the main video (alphabetical listing), the test build shows that the menus are placed before. Don't know how to locate the script location, are they stored before the menu information?

If they are, then i'm thinking the Intro VTS's should be 1-3 and the main video (w/ menus and scripts) should be VTS 4.
