Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

Alright, this computer can’t handle image registation.
Here are my results with the raw capture image:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/156203
(some slight color tweaking after the histogram match to get as close to the warped blu colors as possible… just shifting closer to magenta than green, changing the hue of yellows to almost lime green, and upping contrast)

  • Home now, and on my home screen can far better see the blown out darks (resulting from my tweaks, not the histogram match). Still, achieves mostly similar colors. How they screwed up the colors so bad in their initial scans that I can barely replicate them is beyond me.

just for a slightly registered, histogram matched version of that comparison:

Jesus, that’s a huge improvement - how did you do it? If there’s something I still feel like I have A LOT to learn about, then it’s color correction - would this be possible to replicate in AE?
Here’s what the raw scan looks like:
http://s18.postimg.org/ccagrvacn/Star_Wars_ROTJ_Reel3_Pro_Res444_mov_snapshot_19_37.jpg
and what you see in the BD vs LPP comparison is the best I was able to get out of it.

I completely missed your reply - Honestly, I have no idea how to replicate it in AE. As strange as it seems, I find I get the best results in GIMP. It has a very simple image registration tool you can add, as well as the histogram matching script.

-Image Registration Plugin: http://registry.gimp.org/node/24248
-Histogram Matching: http://www.silent9.com/blog/archives/162-Gimp-Script-Histogram-Match.html

(I’m working on an example using the raw scan, but my work computer isn’t very fast with image registation.)

Since I’m unsure how to do this in AE, my suggestion is to histogram match in GIMP, then use DrDre’s Color Correct tool to build a profile between your source image and your histogram matched one. I find that Dre’s tool works great so long as the image is cropped perfectly, so finding a color correction you like before hand and adjusting to it using the tool provides a pixel perfect adjustment match that’s more easily applied without getting artifacts.

GIMPs image registration isn’t the greatest, and I don’t know how to automate it between two sets of pictures. Because of that, I tend to use it more to adjust pictures for comparison images.

With histogram matching, I’ve found this process works best for me -

  1. Open both images in GIMP (seperately not as layers)
  2. Using LAB (preserve Luma) Match your reference image to your Source.
  3. Using RGB, match your source to the reference image.
  4. In the Reference image window, edit>undo Match Histogram
  5. Using RGB, again match your source to the reference image.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time
  1. Fox fanfare. I don’t care if it’s not a Fox Movie. It’s necessary.

  • Does anyone else take issue with the opening sequence and the Max Von Sydow conversation? I thought the few lines of dialogue dragged… imagine if in ANH, rather than the initial space battle, you see the Tantive fly by, followed by the Star Destroyer not firing, then immediately go to Leia giving R2 the plans and 3P0 bumbling around looking for him. THEN the Tantive gets caught in the tractor beam. THEN the stormtrooper battle. It just wouldn’t be epic enough.

  • I think BB8 should just catch 2 lines, one from old man Sydow, one from Poe, with no pause between the lines and music making it seem tense and like Poe knows he can’t linger.

  • That scene just hit me wrong, and I’d seen the Rey shot in the mask starting the next sequence too many times in the trailer for the following sequence to correct it. It took me about 10 minutes to really get into the film.

  1. The crawl also was a bit too “personal” with the use of “Luke” and “Leia” so frequently.

-ORIGINAL:
Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE. She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.

Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where an old ally has discovered a clue to Luke’s whereabouts….

-MY SUGGESTION:

Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last of the fabled Jedi Knights, has been destroyed. Fear once again grips the galaxy.

To combat the growing threat, the NEW REPUBLIC has enlisted the help of Skywalker’s twin, General Leia Organa, to lead a brave new RESISTANCE. In a desperate attempt to find her brother and gain his help in the conflict, General Organa has dispatched her most daring pilot on a secret mission to the desert planet of Jakku. There, an old ally waits, claiming to have at last discovered the key to finding Luke, and with him the salvation of them all…

In a similar manner to the PT, just give it a couple of months/years after the hype dies down to where people’ll start seeing it for what it “really” is to where the faneditors have to step in to fix it.

I disagree with this to a point. The desire for an edit of this is probably pretty strong right off the bat for many of us. The difference between this and the PT is that there is A LOT of stuff that can be kept, and a light trimming with a few music changes and a tacked on Fox Fanfare could do wonders, as opposed to complete story reworking required in the PT. This film is a rehash definitely, but it’s a rehash of a movie (and more vaguely the whole trilogy) that most of us love with a plot that we can generally accept.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Okay…

Film was really good.

Just a few personal qualms…

-silence up until “Star Wars” appears. I like the additional intro music. The hack job they did for the digital release was still better than silence. I look forward to edits inserting the Fox fanfare.

-BB8 should have rolled in at the END of the Von Sydow conversation, with a quick few last words and goodbye. The pace in that initial sequence seemed really off to me.
–side note: why B-B-8. Every time a character says it, it throws off the cadence of their speech.
Say AB8 and BB8 out loud to yourself and you’ll hear what I mean, how the BB is jarring to say.

-Music too loud on Jakku. Some of the best Tatooine moments in ANH were sound effect/silence driven.

-Poor editing on conversations with Leia. Oddly, it wasn’t just the delivery I found jarring - the camera seems closer to her face than to Han’s. It throws off that one on one interaction and feels as if all of her shots were done alone in reshoots. She does seem far less comfortable in her lines, but her dialogue was the most poorly written in my opinion. Her “it was Snokes fault” was the weakest line in the film, and considering she’s speaking to the man who abandoned her after their son left, there should have been a little bit more sting in her words, reminiscent of SW and ESB. Here, I feel like she is suffering from the same dumbing down and weakening that the writers handed her in RotJ, the same way Padme (ignoring the deleted scenes) was handled in RotS.

-R2 waking up was just stupid and seemed overly coincidental. At the least it should have been intercut with Rey and Leia hugging to show that Rey’s arrival is what did it.

-Was I the only one waiting for Luke to crack the slightest of grins and force pull the lightsaber into his metallic hand? I liked the long hair though 😃

Star Wars ANH Bluray Semi-Despecialized & CC (JASWFP) V1 DONE (Released)
Time

Just wanted to let everyone know that I’m doing a BD encode of this for my SW marathon before TFA, and intend to be a proper organ donor. I love the colors on this, but will say that for some reason the audio on it didn’t hit my surround sound system well (no clue why, but it just plays a bit tinny). As such, I’ve constructed a stereo track for this as well. The BD I release will have only the stereo track muxed, but I’ll include newguy’s original surround track separately in case you want to remux yourself. (I create my BDs in BDtoAVCHD with Placebo speed and grain preset, but it limits you to a single audio track).

Just letting everyone know I put a lossless re-encode of this up on myspleen - it an 18GB mkv. Combined the parts in virtualdub and output to YV12 Lagarith. Then ran through BDtoAVCHD with x264 CRF 0, grain preset and placebo speed settings. Also output the pcm capture as flac. Audio appears to be slightly out of sync, but considering the processing power needed to watch this I figured it’s more likely people will be using it as a source rather than standard viewing.

Happy Holidays 😃

NSP/JSC Trilogy - Althor's 5-AVG (with NSP Clean Up) + Schorman's GOUT Synched LD
Time

I’ve found the issue… for some reason virtualdub is outputting all screwy. My resulting AVI files are incorrectly set as DV NTSC pixel aspect ratio (around .9) with a 23.98 frame rate. My computer kept crashing so I was having to render in small chunks, so when I imported to Premiere I created nested sequences for each side. Those also ended up 23.98… but when I went to interpret footage it says 23.976… ugh.

Pretty much, my workprint is a good representation of how I want things to look and sound, but I’m having to start from scratch to deal with the issue.
.
.
.
I’ll continue to work on this in my spare time, but it’s been delayed for a bit. My children’s mother attempted suicide on Monday and I am suddenly a full time single parent as opposed to 1/2 time.
.
.
.
On a happier note, I have some leads on acquiring high quality captures of AotC and RotS on Letterbox VHS. With those as well, I will probably aim to release:
2 GB H.264/AAC MP4 files for each film.
BD-5 H.264/PCM for each film

A single BD-25 with all six films. I’ll render a menu in DVD Architect with multiple Playback Options - Play All by Episode Number, Play All by Release Date, Play All Machete Order, or Select Individual Film.

I’ll replace the m2ts files in the resulting folders with lossless h.264/PCM and run through BD Rebuilder set for BD-25 at max quality settings for h.264 and 640kbps Stereo AC3.
