The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
It's cool to see how far you've come on this. I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I believe I saw the Richard Williams version of a "A Christmas Carol" when I was really young--I think it might've been on the Family Channel at Christmastime. I've looked around for that version, but I couldn't find out what it was--but I'm positive that this one has to be it. I oughta check out that online tv airing--but it will definitely be nice to have on the DVD.

Do you think I should watch Arabian Knight first to compare, or would I actually probably have a better experience seeing the Recobbled Cut first?

Looking good! Keep up the good work!

Yeah, the idea of a massive Ben-Hur style edit is really cool. The thought of recreating the original flow is a good one.

In the meantime, though, since that isn't really doable for this project, if you could somehow establish with some dialogue somewhere that the DS (my filter blocks out D e a th...ugh) is their big plan, and the intention from the start is to make more than one--perhaps eventually a whole armada of DS's or something--then it might help make the ROTJ DSII work better. So when the DSII comes along, they've probably already been working on it--since the first one was the initial DS, they learned from the construction of that and are now ready to kick it up a notch and then begin the whole bunch of DS's, starting with the DSII. Does that make sense? I don't know if that would be doable either, but for this saga edit, it might be a good way to go.

Idea: Our Gang - Chronological (* unfinished project *)
Time

Well, I’m thinking of doing this. I have the 6 DVDs of Our Gang (or The Little Rascals) that Cabin Fever released using Volumes 1-12 of their VHS tapes, and I wanted to put them in chronological order. Upon further investigation, I now know that there are also Volumes 13-21 available on VHS, and possibly laserdisc, and I’m sure people have made DVD transfers. Basically, my plan is to try to get a hold of Volumes 13-21 on VHS and transfer them myself, or get a hold of a DVD transfer. From there, I would distribute them in chronological order over however many DVDs it takes. If possible, I might try to cut all of the Leonard Maltin intros into a single documentary or something, but if not, I would just put them in their original form on the DVDs as bonus features. If I can get a hold of Volumes 13-21, I definitely want to do this. I know there are numerous DVD bootlegs of the Cabin Fever VHS tapes with the contents simply plopped into DVDs, but I want to make a really superior fan product here, putting them in chronological order, making nice menus–a really nice release for these classics.

Is anyone at all interested in this, and/or could anyone help with getting me (a) a copy of the 13-21 VHS tapes, (b) a good DVD transfer, or © a DVD transfer of the laserdiscs (if they really exist)? Also, if anyone has the two CDs of Little Rascal music performed by the Beau Hunks, I would really appreciate copies, as I would love to have them, and I could use them for menus–and I might try inserting some music into choice shorts (the early talkies particularly). I’d love some input on this, and if anyone has the above stuff, I’d really appreciate it.

That Episode II trailer was fantastic!

There's an idea I've been toying around with in my head and just checked it out. I think we could give Jar Jar a cool moment in the Battle of Naboo. What if when Jar Jar goes to the big booma truck, you cut out the bit of him hiding under it and it rolling away, and just cut to him pulling it open. Are there any shots of Jar Jar looking defiant or determined or anything like that? You could put it just before we see him pulling it open. Then, when we see him chasing after the boomas, then with the dubbing you could make it like he's cheering, basically saying "YEAH!!" and getting excited. I think it could work. Check it out.

Whoa! Sweet!

Hmm...I don't know about a prologue. IMO, a brief summary of the Jedi/Sith/Force situation could be included in the first paragraph of the crawl, that would probably be the best. The thing about it being two intros is one of the big points I'm thinking of. I agree with MTH, it definitely seems like one of those things that would just be best to try out and see how it works.

The clips look fantastic! Great work!

Those look like cool choices for the Arena. As far as balancing adventure and drama/tension, "Sail Barge Assault (alternate)" is definitely good for that. I also think it would be very possible to insert the Rebel Fanfare and/or Luke's Theme (or is it the Skywalker theme now?) at strategic points, and cut to more dramatic music when appropriate, and so on. I'll have to think about the Obi-Wan attack part.

I'm helping InfoDroid with the other Starkiller Ranch stuff, and if you want any help, I'd be more than happy to help lighten the workload.

I'm trying to think about battle footage. Is there anything usable in Lawrence of Arabia, do you think?

Are you serious?!

Several years ago I saw a portion of some incarnation of this movie on TV, and I always saw it at the video store (I think as Arabian Knights). I seem to recall some sort of dizzying stairway chase--I think someone (probably the Thief) was trying to chase a ball that was rolling away from him. I could be totally wrong, but anyway, this project looks very interesting. I'm assuming that it would be good for this to be the first (maybe only?) version I see of it. Cool stuff!

Ah, yes. I had been wondering about that. I think the biggest thing is the ESB kiss. Everything else is okay. If you can somehow cut from "I guess you don't know everything about women" smoothly to the shot of her leaving (presumably with some kind of reaction shot or something in between), you can just do it that way, with Luke's expression now simply meaning "Ha! You just got OWNED!" Ideally, this shouldn't even have been an issue. Personally, I've always rooted for the idea of Leia not being Luke's sister, and them being together. Oh, well...

Well, I just finished reading the whole thread. The progress is really neat.

I actually haven't heard the tone poems. It isn't possible to use anything from the front or center channels? Dang.

As far as Threepio goes, as much as I hate the thought of not having him in addition to R2 (and I never really minded Anakin building him--don't hurt me! ), both Trooperman's idea for II and Yoda Is Your Father's idea for III (although this evidently isn't possible due to the Geonosis sequence) have their own charm. The only real bugger to me is the fact that if Anakin doesn't build Threepio, there is no scene of Anakin and Padme going to see him, leaving the ending of the scene as "Your son was kind enough to offer us shelter." PLOP. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't see any real problem--Trooperman's take sounds pretty feasible. Is there any extra footage of Shmi and/or Qui-Gon in the entry or something where a little extra dialogue could be inserted to smooth that out?

Cool clips! I think I'd probably go with 1. I didn't really like the look of number 2.

As far as the arena (are you talking just the monster battle, or the whole Battle of Geonosis?), my biggest concern is whether or not you will be reinserting "The Arena" from the AOTC soundtrack. I think it will be great for this project to finally have the cue in its proper place, instead of being used seemingly everywhere BUT there. Maybe I'm a bit biased here, but I think one of the biggest things for the whole sequence, from the arena to the actual battle, will be the music. Once you take out Threepio, that's gonna have very possibly some of the biggest impact, to have exciting, relevant music, as opposed to the pretty blatant "this sounds cool" method used in the original. It's been a little while since I've seen the original, but I think it would be nice to have some statements of the title theme if it's appropriate. Maybe something a la "Chasm Crossfire." In Episode I, Anakin, Padme, and Obi-Wan were secondary characters, in Episode III, everything's going totally downhill. It seems like this would be an ideal place to musically show a sense of fun and heroism, even in the midst of danger, at least when they're really shining in battle. It doesn't have to be like that the whole time, but that's been kind of a wish of mine for a little while. I've got some other potential ideas, but that's the big stuff as far as I'm concerned. Things are looking good!

Thanks for the welcomes, guys! I'm glad to hear the visual work is being done. Yeah, Trooperman, that may actually be my main beef for the PT. I don't think the issue was even so much a CG issue (though some sweet model work would've been nice), as a film/digital issue. A film look (IMO) is much better for Star Wars, and that'll be a big help.

And I love the idea for 3PO's introduction! I was truly laughing at the dialogue--it'll be fun hearing Uncle Owen ask 3PO if he speaks bocce in ANH after that! I hope you go with that, because it's really good. I must say, I was a little sad to hear the dynamic duo wouldn't be present for all six films with this approach, but just that bit made me feel a whole lot better about it. Very nice!

I will be sending you a PM shortly, InfoDroid.

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to this stuff. I'm pretty happy with the prequels as is myself, but I'm still very curious about this. It looks very cool, and the changes are very interesting. As far as making the prequels fit more with the OT, I have one suggestion. The most glaring difference to me is the clear difference in overall picture quality with the digital of Episodes II and III (I liked the look of Episode I, but I've only seen it on DVD once--it seems like it was shot on film, and that's better). It seems just a bit TOO clear, if you see what I'm saying. Everything seems TOO sharp. Would there be some way you could slightly blur the edges, or soften the picture somehow, I think that would go a long way in making the Saga more visually cohesive. I don't know if this is feasible, but I thought I'd throw that idea in. Also, I've been editing soundtracks for a couple of years now with Sound Forge, so if you want any extra score editing done, I'd love to help. Good work so far, guys!
