Yeah, the music was definitely one of the weaker parts of AOTC. That's why I look forward to seeing what other film scores will do for this film.

More like the handling of the music was one of the weaker parts of AOTC (read: the prequels). The score got so hacked up it's pathetic. It's really distracting to me now because so much is reused and inappropriately cut together. However, aside from a reedit of the score to its original form and more musically and thematically appropriate edited cues were there is music but no recording, this is about the best thing you can do, I think. I am very grateful to see an edit of this proportion being handled by someone with musical knowledge like Trooperman. The music in the clips I've heard have made me very confident in his abilities, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing and hearing the results.

And I look forward to seeing tjdavis's surprise! The anticipation builds!

1/5 through? Excellent! I am definitely pleased the KOTOR March will be going in the clone introduction. With what we have to work with, that and keeping the Imperial March in the finale are the best things you can do for that, IMO. And I also agree that, if at all possible, Jar Jar really needs to speak English, for all above mentioned reasons. I hope it works out! Looking good!

I'm not exactly sure what my big picture plan is (after all, who has not seen Ep. II that is going to see a copy of this first? Realistically...)

True enough. I guess what I was trying to get across was more of the style of approach: doing this like it's the first time coming out and no one knows what's going to happen. Not necessarily that they don't, but do it like they don't. Now, this may not be the way you want to do it, and that's fine, but if you do, then that would allow for creative touches like keeping the stormtroopers a surprise that would be really nice. I've already heard talk (either here or at Starkiller Ranch, I'm not sure) of people thinking Anakin becoming Vader should be edited so that it's still a surprise in ESB. It would be along those lines. I personally think those things would be a nice touch. At the same time, it depends on how you're handling it--like this is the first trilogy that came out, or like this came out afterwards, and you already know everything and want the coolness of seeing stuff happening and KNOWING that it's happening. Both approaches have their benefits. It's your edit. I'm just throwing out ideas.

However, after thinking about it, I do want the Imperial March reveal to be at either the end of the film or in the next film. Not during that particular scene.

Yeah, I think that's the way to go. If there were bigger statements of the Imperial Theme from ANH, I would recommend that for the end of AOTC, and then finally you get Imperial March in ROTS during the temple march. Unfortunately we don't, and we also don't have access to the original "orchestral blowout" finale (as one of the LSO players referred to it), which I think would be the best thing to use. The way I understand it, JW was wanting to keep the big Imperial March statement for ROTS, but Lucas wanted it at the end of AOTC, so that's what happened. It's unfortunate. It would've been nice if Williams had been able to do more in how the thematic material was setup and everthing, because I think he really wanted to, judging by the unused material that's out there. But I digress.

And I agree, CC, that it is great music. I would prefer the original piece, but unless you're going to change the pitch on the KOTOR march and use that again, then there aren't really many options.

As for the scene of Obi-Wan surveying the Clonetroopers, I would use the most alternate version of the Imperial March that you can find (nothing too different, but a littel variety is in order as the first full blown version should be saved for the end of the film). The "KOTOR March" that Weezer mentioned is a great piece of music, but for something as iconic as our first glimpse of the Stormtroopers, I think it calls for the iconic theme of the Imperial March.

I'm writing here in response to the overall dilemma of the musical treatment for the clonetroopers. I really think the huge iconic statement of the Imperial March should be saved for ROTS when Anakin and the troops march into the Jedi Temple. "The Arena" sounds good, but really, it isn't thematically appropriate, and it doesn't do the scene justice in its emotional context. I strongly recommend saving the big IM statement for that. Now, you could use the Imperial March in SOTDS, but I think it would be better if there was original music for the clones/stormtroopers. There was the Imperial motif from ANH. It's interesting, because Williams originally composed something different for the finale where we see the troopers loading up. There is actually an Across the Stars music video or something that has the last second or two of the original piece. The Imperial March from the end is an insert, recorded (I think) at the request of Lucas. When you hear the clip, it is highly possible that Williams recorded a grand statement of the ANH Imperial Theme. It's sad, because I think that Williams was really hampered in the way of thematic continuity and connection in the PT.

Now, how you handle the music is going to have to do with how you're wanting to handle the story. Trooperman, say someone has never seen the Star Wars movies, and knows nothing about who does what or anything. Are you trying to keep the turn of the clones a surprise for ROTS? If so, then it would be highly preferable to avoid the Imperial March. You could still use something with a somewhat--or even just potentially--menacing undertone, but make it more of a grand fanfare for this army that--in the end of the movie--will end up saving the day. If you use something that is sort of on the fence like that, where you aren't sure whether they will end up good or bad--because at this point, there's still a mystery afoot, and we don't know what's going on--then that sort of tone with a balance of excitement and possible threat is there, then you're wondering until the end, and you THINK you know they're good, and BAM! That sets you up for a shock in ROTS. If you want to go that route, then the Imperial March will give it up right away. On that note, the Trade Federation march would also be bad for that approach. If not, then there is more freedom there, and if you want the Imperial March, hey, go right ahead. No problems there.

If you want to save it, then I think that KOTOR march is a great option. It's still got an exciting feel to it, but kind of teeters between benevolence and malevolence. And it would underscore that grand moment.

Food for thought.

WOW! This trailer has got me very excited, Trooperman!

The overall look is very cool. I'll need to see more, but the picture doesn't seem as overly sharp as it was in the original. The extra battle footage (from Dune, I assume) mixed nicely with everything else and has me really psyched up for the Battle of Geonosis. Lama Su sounds perfect! I'm intrigued by the look of the conveyor belt sequence--it reminds me of ESB sort of.

Now, I'm having to get used to Anakin's voice, but it really does work pretty well as his voice. As others have said, it could be just a slight bit higher--but not too much! I think the biggest thing about it is that, as you mentioned, the mixing isn't finished so he sounds very prominent and not a natural part of the soundscape. But the acting is sounding pretty nice, and I think it will help tremendously once you have finished the sound editing. Nice work!

I'll need to see more of it to judge, but Mace's saber looked good. I'm not entirely sure about the heavy color changes, like the moonlit Naboo, but there's definitely supreme potential in this.

I look forward to seeing more, Trooperman. Great job!

First off, wmgan, I sent you a couple PMs. Let me know if you need me to resend them (I'm sure you're a pretty popular guy about now!).

Second, I have been meaning to put in my 2 cents about ADM's prequel edits. I was given the SL versions of Vergence in the Force, Path to the Dark Side, Clone Wars, and Revenge of the Sith by Miasta a month or two ago. I must say, I really enjoyed them! You did some great work.

I don't have a lot of time to comment, but the cuts in Vergence in the Force were very good--the arrival at Otoh Gunga flowed very nicely, and the flag parade and Anakin's destruction of the battleship were much better without the poop jokes and accidental exclamations.

Path to the Darkside was also very good. The love story was very smooth here, and it was just overall very enjoyable. It was also a good move to cut the stuff about the decoy saying she failed and everything.

I hadn't seen the Clone Wars cartoon in its episodic form, but you did a good job of cutting everything together. It flowed very naturally.

Revenge of the Sith was AWESOME! The reinserted cut scenes REALLY helped, setting up the Rebellion, and explaining why Bail is so prominent in the last half of the movie. Before I felt like I was missing something when Bail arrived at the temple--what was he doing there? But now it makes much more sense. I actually liked the Qui-Gon stuff a lot! I got chills when Yoda arrived on Dagobah. The only thing I could see is maybe making Qui-Gon's voice a little quieter--he seemed a bit on the loud side.

There wasn't much that I saw negative. There were a few times when the whole screen went white (cutting to the morning of the race in VOTF, the transition to Anakin's nightmare), but could that be because it's single layer, or could it be my copy? At one point I skipped straight to Anakin's nightmare, and it didn't do that. It was weird. And the musical transition to the first cut scene on Naboo seemed just slightly off. If you add a little reverb to the first cue as it's fading out, then it should sound better. And I liked the home scene on Coruscant before the nightmare, but that's just me.

Overall, great work! I look forward to seeing your work on the OT.

These are some cool ideas here. I'm very curious about the Coruscant stuff.

Just to let you guys know, we're going to be moving. We'll be staying at my Granny's condo starting Saturday for up to a month, and she only has DSL. So I'll do my best to stay in touch, and I can try to use my Dad's computer at work for faster stuff, but I may be limited on my sound contributions for a little while--MAYBE. I'll still do my best to keep up to speed.

Cool ideas, guys!

Audio/Video Sync? (Formerly "Best way to rip on a Mac?")
Time
Well, I tried to edit today. I put the video and audio in place on the timeline in FinalCut Pro and rendered it. It started in sync, and the lengths and everything were exactly the same, but somehow by the end of the show, the thing was completely out of sync. Does anyone know how to fix this, or at least what caused it?

Also, there are frequent blue flashes, and I don't know what is causing them.

Can anyone help?

Okay, cool. Yeah, I skimmed it briefly to get an idea of where to get what (I've used SmartRipper on Windows for audio ripping, so I had a basic idea of what I was looking for to set up the rip). I'll play around with it.

I tried downloading mAC3dec, but all I got was this .sit file or something like that. Is there some other specific program you need to use it?

Does anyone know what the best program/method to rip DVDs on a Mac is? I downloaded Mac the Ripper and ripped the DVD, but I wasn't entirely sure if I used the best settings or even the best program. Also what should I use to convert the AC3 file to a .wav or .aiff file? I'm going to be editing on a Mac with Final Cut Pro 5, and I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hey, I've watched the first 5 YouTube parts. Very cool! I think one of my favorites so far is in the first part when Nanny beats up the Thief! Hilarious! One thing, though--are you planning on using other music to replace the synth stuff, like the "Tack? Is that your name?" scene? It kind of pulled me out of it when that music came on. There's definitely good stuff from Sheherazade that would fit. Good stuff so far, though!

Oh, man. Info Droid, man, I to see you go. Best of luck to you.

Wow. Commander Courage, music editing is really my forte, but I'll do what I can as far as overall sound mixing. I'll send you a PM. Anyway, I'm honored to be asked to do this. It's really cool.

As hard as this is losing a couple top guys here, I am also excited about the future of the edits.

Sorry you're not going to be able to continue here, tj. Thanks for the work you've done already! Good luck!

If there's going to be a musical number then I would assume we would be restoring Lapti Nek, right? I figure (no matter what you're using) you transition from the scene preceding it, then maybe use one of the establishing shots of Jabba's Palace (perhaps paint the droids out of one of the early shots if that's possible), and then from the establishing shot you maybe could do a cut or a wipe to the original "Lapti Nek" scene. I think it would serve a purpose to have it: without the original opening, there is no setup for what's happening. It seems to me it would be a smoother introduction to the Jabba sequence than just cutting straight to Boush's entrance.

Wow. I must say, it's amazing how you're being able to contact all of these people who were involved in the making of this film. It's really awesome. It's getting me very excited for the completion of this project! Yeah, next time you get a chance to talk to someone involved--RECORD IT! Multiple commentaries would be awesome--it's cool that you've already got one (sort of) from Alex Williams. Awesome.

That's true, if the Emperor's arrival started it, maybe. It's been a little while since I watched, is there an extra overhead Star Destroyer shot--if not in that scene, in another?

Also, now that we're talking about briefing scenes, is there any chance of replacing the DS graphic in the ANH briefing? I'm half cringing as I type this just from being used to it (and they are kinda cool in an old school way), but given the quality of the graphics in AOTC and ROTJ, the only explanation I can see for them looking like that is the status of the Rebellion at that point. They were just winning their first big battle, so that could definitely go for the explanation, but if you don't want to go with that and if it's feasible, it might be something worth looking into.
