Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

I meant that is the whole movie actually cropped from a bigger image or was it only that shot or what's going on. So could you go back to original negatives and see a lot more than what has been released? Like 005 said: I'm just wondering what ratio the original film was in to allow for so much cropping.

This doesn't seem to be a regular difference in cropping, that was what I first thought when I saw that screenshot, but as you can see it's largely shifted to the left, so it must be a deliberate change. (Lucasfilm really made that word infamous ;).

As Harmy said, most films are cropped more or less when they make a video transfer, but then it's in the range of what was displayed on the Empire-pic he posted, the Japanese Special Collection transfer for example displays too much vertically in some scenes but it's always a marginal.

They must've approached this scene in the same way they altered the composition of the Falcon-cockpit in Empire.

Anyone hate Return of the Jedi?
Time

Anchorhead said:

In Star Wars we had burned bodies, mass murder (Alderaan), torture, severed arms lying on the floor, untrustworthy hired pilot, etc. Those elements were either castrated or g-rated as the series progressed and I think that hurt the OT overall.  There was real danger in Star Wars.  The lack of of any real danger in Return made me want to walk out of the theater in 1983.

For me, the change didn't work.  For a most others, it worked well and still does.

Even though I understand what you mean, when you're describing Star Wars, it starting to sound like a serious heavy drama, quite much overkill IMO. This is pulp and fantasy material afterall. Don't try to pretend it's something different than it is, it's a very well made fantasy film for kids, and when I say kids, I mean 7-18 year olds, (yes, a kid can be 18) don't be ashamed for liking a good film primarily directed towards kids. Just because it showed burned bodies in one scene doesn't directly make the film only made for mature audiences. Good fairytales have always had dark material embedded in their stories throughout history, it should have. Jedi is just a bad kid-film IMO. And who can really blame them, it was the third film out in the franchise, the legendary bad sequel-nr, I challenge you to name a good third, (don't mention Return of the King, as it's not a sequel in that sense, IMO it's not even that great.)

Although, in these days when I am seeing bad hollywood films, I am seeing Return of the Jedi as the blueprint, not Star Wars as it is often accused for. That legendary film is still something very unique, it's horribly sad that it cannot be enjoyed like it should anymore. It's pure magic and new generations are not allowed to see it... madness.

Anyway, I think I am one of those fans you're looking for doubleKO, as Anchorhead, I have disconnected myself, but just from Jedi the last 15 - 20 years. When I feel the urge to watch them, it's just SW and Empire, that universe is much more interesting to me, the ambiguity of it all, doesn't matter to me one bit that everything isn't wrapped up at the end or not, I like it that way much better than I was presented with in '83. I guess it also depends on how much you want to get a formulated congratulation-card conclusion to stories in film all the time. I think both films compliment each other perfectly. It ends on a downer yes, but it's beautiful!

Interesting topic guys. TradeGothic seems not as bold as the font should be. I'm going to have a look at this...

 If you're able to find a closer match, I'm first in line. The one they originally used were probably never digitized, the fonts that do get digitized are also often slightly different in their appearences to their older siblings.

...but first let me give you an avisynth function that will make the drop shadow (you can't use -1 for horizontal sadly)....

Function DropSub(clip input, string caption, int posX, int posY, int fStart, int fEnd)
{input
#Currently set for anamorphic PAL...
f = "TradeGothic LT Bold"
f_siz = 44
f_wid = 10.5
f_lin = 25
f_spc = -2
f_col = $FFFFFF

subtitle (caption,posX+2,posY+2,fStart,fEnd,f,f_siz,$000000,$7F000000,7,f_spc,f_lin,f_wid)
subtitle (caption,posX+1,posY+1,fStart,fEnd,f,f_siz,$000000,$00000000,7,f_spc,f_lin,f_wid)
subtitle (caption,posX, posY, fStart,fEnd,f,f_siz,f_col,$FF000000, 7,f_spc,f_lin,f_wid)
#The following line can be used view the subtitle centred...
#subtitle (caption,-1,200,fStart,fEnd,f,f_siz,f_col,$FF000000,8,f_spc,25,f_wid)
return(last)
}

Then you just call it like this...

DropSub("Going somewhere, Solo?", 240,374,70663,70698)

Yeah, that looks a little smoother than my page-long scripts. ;)

Just keep in mind that these were custom made for dark_jedi's project with his image cropping values, so I don't know how helpful these really are to other similar projects, and they are not completely finished either, you'll have to fiddle a little bit with the drop shadow. I also didn't take as much time and effort like I did with my other scripts (located at the first page of this thread) I was simply bored as hell of working on these subs, so they aren't as close to the original subs in terms of spacing like the other scripts, otherwise they're completely fine.

Yes, but I was talking about "The making of Raiders" not the DVD - extra.

I think thats the one I have. The Best Buy exclusive disc. Sometimes referred to as the 5th disc?

What I tried to explain is that the best Buy exclusive is just a featurette that takes its footage from the old full-length documentary, nothing exclusive about it, it's just about 10 minutes in length but what is on it, is probably in better quality than on the LD-preservations of the full-length.

I did not see any of that in 005's comparison page, can you show me proof?

*edit - I went back and looked at it again, it is ever so slightly different, but for me to use the Canyon scene I need to use this desert scene leading up to it(because of those damn wipes) so this may stay, or maybe if someone has a suggestion I will look into it

The alteration was just made to that single Threepio-shot, so you can still use the '04 footage for everything else, there's no wipes involved there. Then if such a splice will merge well with the surrounding footage or not is another thing. Just thought it was worth to point it out for you.

A thing that looks odd with that alteration besides the CG landscape, take a close look at Threepio, he almost looks like he did in Attack of the Clones, silverclad instead of gold, or is it just me? (I'm not talking about your sample in this case)

And that is clearly not the GOUT because the subtitles are not burned into the frame.  They are just a separate subtitle track on the disc.  So, the footage was sourced from something other than the 1993 Laserdiscs.  Whatever that source might be, they did get a print that was not used on the official DVD transfers.

Yeah, that was my point, those short clips do look pretty good, and they are sourced from the original film (SE used a different font).

So here is a test clip, what do you guys think? it is 04 footage with the 97 clouds added back in, and I want to give a shout out to Harmy for all his help over the past couple of days with AE LOL.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/z34f3u

also I am using the Tantiv IV hallways from the 04, but using the DV for the Leia, 3PO, R2 shot, still not sure about the Vader interrogating scene, Stormtroopers getting Leia, and 3PO and R2 escaping, they do not look much different than the DV, so I may leave that 04 as well because much clearer and no smear.

I am using 005's comparison shot page for the differences, if it wasn't for that I don't think I would have caught the cloud change LOL.

Just a little suggestion, the clouds wasn't the only thing they altered for that shot in '04, the sand dunes were as well, so if you want it to be '97 authentic you'll have to avoid '04-footage in that scene.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

As for the "Which one of these two stays?", obviously the description of what appears on screen has to be kept! I guess we have to sacrifice the hologram's line even if a casual watcher might be wondering what he said there.

I fully agree with you, just wanted to hear your thoughts on it.

Some of these computer display sequences really makes your head explode in those rare instances where you're also able to hear the original English dialogue beneath the Italian dub. Too much info at the same time. :)

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

Ok, thanks for helping out. :) I think I'll just send you the subfile then, I have checked all the timings again and they are fine.

I just want all your opinions again on how to handle the many computer graphic displays. I remember you asked me before Silver, if I could make blue colored subs that matched the films displays and place the specific lines beside their Italian counterpart, although it was a great idea, I think we'll just have to give up on that unfortunately. I'm sorry.

1st: I don't think you would know where to look as the whole screen will get cluttered, and these sequences are very short in duration.

2nd: Some of the screens are animated so I don't know how aestethically pleasing it would be to have the subs spread out all over the screen before the graphic animation is fully in place.

3rd: Some displays don't have room for it.

Anyway, if it wasn't bad enough that these computer displays are short in duration, they also have dialogue in some instances. So the least important info to the story will have to go, if we don't want 7 rows of text that we're not gonna be able to read unless we paused. Fortunately most of that dialogue is gibberish. I'll go max 3 rows and split them up if it is more text, more than 3 gets damn ugly and hard to read IMO.

Sorry for the long speech. ;)

Screen 1:

Deleted line of dialogue heard over this screen:  "--the information on subject THX 1138... 1-1-3-8."

Screen 2:

Which one of these two stays? the dialogue below is spoken by the Hologram in the middle of the sequence.

Screen 3:

Deleted line of dialogue heard over this screen: "--electronic monitoring of subject THX 1138."

Thoughts, suggestions, opinions?
