Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

I've just had a look at the script I used (here). Eedi2() caused artefacts in the Leia cell interrogation so I had to add in a special line to catch that. You will need to check carefully that there aren't any similar cases on Empire. Eedi2() has since been superseded by nnedi2(), so it might be worth updating the script to use the newer filter. You should also check that the colour saturation and hue tweaks and the Y-curve adjustment are appropriate.

Yeah I noticed that line of the script but didn't know that the filter plugin had been updated so thanks for answering my question. I liked your subtle approach to the grain better vs. g-force's script which is also great, I will try it out. Thanks.

J. Williams & LSO: The EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Restored Score: the *AUDIOPHILE EDITION* (Covers & Documentary Booklet)

Here's the last one I'll be posting there - wouldn't be fun if I posted all the visuals while they're getting done, leaving that way no further surprise !

May I present, the definitive cover of the "audiophile edition", no matter what...

Three very badass guys there! maybe you could do an alternative one with the Maestro himself: John Williams, just an idea.

Cannot be more oldschool. ;)

Thanks, the negative one is cool but the "normal" one is perfect.

Yes, Some instruments are out of sync, for sure. Or all the track.

Some of the instruments... that sounds weird. I must give it a listen and compare with the film then.

You mean 35mm stem ? Because as per coincidence, "The Rebels Escape" is also a 35mm filmmix, and what I clumsy call a frequency correction in the remixing details is rather to be called a time alignement rectification, as I did it. I guess "Lando and Han" and "Betrayal" are filmmixes too, and I suspect "Captives" to be so.

As I understand it "The Rebels Escape Again" and "City In The Clouds-part 1" was the only tracks on the Anthology that was taken from 35mm film recordings. The other filmmixes on the Anthology was taken from four-track tape copies that was in very bad condition. I'm not sure but I think all the tracks on the SE that hasn't been remixed by Brian Risner is from these same transfers, including "Deal With The Dark Lord" and "Betrayal At Bespin". Those two tracks along with the others from that transfer have the original Eric Tomlinson filmmix.

Maybe this explain some of the the bad audio issues you can hear with it:

"At least one tape was beginning to fall apart as I transferred it," recollected mastering engineer Bill Wolford. "I had to use alcohol on the capstan wheel to clean the disintegrating residue off as it played, being careful not to affect the pitch. If I hadn't done this the tape would cause a squeal as it passed the heads rendering the dub useless."

Btw, there's an obvious time alignement issue in "Deal With The Dark Lord". Don't know if it comes from a 4-track tape transfer, a 8-track tape transfer or else.

Sorry, I don't fully understand what you mean by that, do you mean it is out of sync? as I recall "Deal With The Dark Lord" was one of the filmmixes from the two-track tapes.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

Every altered sound effect from the DC mix has now been replaced!  One or two may be a bit rougher than I'd like, but they're as good as I can make them, and it sounds great.  There is something thrilling about hearing the film's "true" soundtrack emerge from the layers of revision that have been imposed on it.

That's some good news! Cannot wait to hear it, I hope it will be available in its current 2.0 state also, I'm looking forward to the final upmixed 5.1 version of course, but it would also be great to have it in its current form as an alternative.

It will be interesting to hear how you handled the cellbay shootout and the Millennium Falcon entering the remains of Alderaan. I guess that was two tough scenes to deal with. Anyway, It's good to hear you've completed the first step of it, good job!

For example, the explosion sound when Han takes out Vader's wingman in the trench is much deeper and panned hard left in the 70mm (and the '93) mix, but is still present in the 35mm, only much less noticeable.

Oh, my bad. I was wrong then about saying that explosion was completely silent in the 35mm, I haven't noticed it before. Thanks.

You won't find a more accurate version... :)

But hey, you were right: The Anthology uses different takes, when I thought only the mixing was different. But they look so close to me.

Your Album version sounds so beautiful I almost started to cry, love the restored harps to it :)

I think you have sucessfully managed to calm down the harsch sound of the SE tracks to match the rest, but Deal With The Dark Lord and Betrayal is two tracks that is hard to comment on, and work on I guess. I didn't know the problems with those until you pointed them out, I think both samples sound better and a little worse at the same time, as you described on the first page maybe its impossible to get the best from two worlds. By the way, Drawing The Battle Lines sounds terrific!

Damn I had forgotten how ugly and boring The Imperial March sound in its SE form! I'm speechless, once again I'm in LSO heaven! I'm still amazed how good you have gotten this score to sound, and I'm still amazed after all these years what a f***ing Masterpiece this score is and it's even clearer to me now, with your superb mastering, it gives me the chills!

The Improvements is really easy to notice now with your new samples, so much detail and life revealed in the sound it's amazing, even when compared to the original RSO ones! Fantastic EQ! this is how its gonna be done, not loud and bright to fool the ears in to think it's sounding better, just gentle and subtle EQ. Thank you and well done ABC!

Your CD3 medley was a great listen! pretty good in the editing ;)

I made a mistake when I said the balance corrections for "The Rebel Fleet/End Titles" were done in 8 parts. They've been done in 12 parts... Here are the cuts if you want to check:

0'00" - 0' 57"; 1'22"; 1'33"; 2'06"; 3'11"; 3'20"; 3'51"; 4'28"; 4'37"; 5'52"; 6'21"-6'23" (yeah, even the last bit!)

That is many cuts... that easily can bring you a headache! ;)

Looking at the examples, I would say it looks like a blurrier version of TradeGothic LT Bold. The 'g' is the key, I think. Look at how much higher that little bit sticking out on top is in the Franklin ones, whereas the TradeGothics are level with the top of the g.

Exactly my thoughts, I just included it for the popular belief that Franklin is the one. But I'm still not entirely sure about TradeGothic.

I'm trying to figuring out what font was used for Greedo's language in the 1977 print, if the font is still available and/or have been digitized. I'm beginning to think that TradeGothic may be the one. Many have suggested that it was Franklin Gothic Demi Cond, but I think that was the font used for the SE and the Prequels.

In Puggo's restoration, you can see it a little better than before:

And another one:

Any suggestions?

Without a proper recording for reference, it would be impossible to make an accurate reproduction of Empire's 70mm mix.  If I were going to do anything with it, I would use the '93 version for its dynamics and just replace the hacked up music cues with the appropriate sections from the SE, since those really do sound better, and possibly insert the missing sound of the snowspeeder crashing, and leave it at that.  The different dialogue just gives me an 'inauthentic' feel every time I hear it, and R2 not tasting very good is funnier anyway.

I also think it's pointless to do a recreation of it unless you also have the footage to support it, but a fanmade mix would be cool though. I would be glad to just have the odd missing sound effect of the crashing snowspeeder restored.
