Can someone please tell me what the subtitles looks like on the Return of the Jedi SE Laserdisc?
The reason I'm asking this, is that I want to be sure the caps on Jedi above is the original theatrical subtitles from '83, it surely looks like it if you compare them with the SW subtitles on Puggo's transfer, but if that is the case... How the hell can that footage be in so good shape in that documentary!?
Ok, I'm posting the few pictures I have on the SE-subs, maybe someone will find them useful, the font looks like one of the many Franklin Gothic versions. The same font was possibly used in the prequels.

Interesting...the image on it seems to look very good. Thanks for the in-depth review, zombie. I think if you would somehow combine the best from g-force's script with Moth3r's pwnage script you would also have some good results, g-force's image stabilisation meets pwnage approach to grain structure.

Here's a interesting post made by Lukas Kendall on the FSM Board a few months ago: You are not going to get what you want for either franchise. Lucasfilm controls the rights and ransoms them to the highest bidder. They also defer to Williams, whose people run up big mixing bills and do not orient the releases to collectors' wishes (as happened on the recent Indy box). On top of that there are still elements problems with the original Trilogy due to the stuff having not been well archived at the time...there was a guy at the Star Wars Convention at the L.A. Convention Center a few years ago who was ransoming off original tape reels he had dug up from (LP remix engineer) John Neal's estate, including the original 2" 16-track of side four of the Star Wars LP! (Who knows where sides 1 through 3 went...the way this guy explained it, he got side 4 out of some garage...he did loan it to Lucasfilm at least to make a digital copy.) Finally, that 2CD Phantom Menace was something of a fiasco...Lucasfilm only did it because the tracks had gotten out there somehow (I forget how) and thought they were giving the collectors what they wanted by using the edited stems as conformed to the movie (with a million edits). They were quite taken aback by all the negative criticism -- "what's the problem, it's exactly every note as heard in the film?" I remember explaining to one of the executives the subtleties involved and by the time I finished the attitude I heard was along the lines of "to hell with these people." Others know much more than I do but omerta prevails...such is the power of the Force. My real advice is to relax because after all we do have every note from the Trilogy on those 2CD editions...it's easy to overlook what a big deal that was...as well as significant Indy releases. Lukas I think that post shows how much this franchise is in the wrong hands nowadays. I know that we filmscore enthusiasts is still a minority and a little "niche market", but they have treated the films even worse!

No one knows if any audio tracks are in bad shape, only Lucasfilm would know that. They are simply just not available, I think the only theatrical audio mixes that have been available officially on home video is the 35mm Dolby stereo mixes for each film. The kind of sources like the mono mix and the 70mm mix for Star Wars isn't known to have appeared for Empire and Jedi unfortunately.

It depends on which VHS, doubleofive. I think they come in a few variations. Here is another, taken from the doc. "Classic Creatures". (looks like FF Dirty-Seven) Probably used on home video in the eighties.

Nothing really exciting, the text is pretty much about the huge sucess following Star Wars and the hardships George went through of making it and end with a qoute from George taken from the documentary "From Star Wars to Jedi" about not have been able to fully explore the world he created in the first film. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this book.

Yeah, your earlier comment made me go back and revisit my old DVD, the original isolated score & alternate music track is two very good features on that disc I'd almost forgotten about. The Intrada release of the score is certainly a must buy. ;)

I'm not entirely sure but I think the theatrical SE used Franklin Gothic, the "A long time ago" text was also updated with Franklin I think, but it could be worth to check, thanks.
I've checked the old documentaries "Classic Creatures" and "From Star Wars to Jedi" for the original theatrical font, but unfortunately it was the old home video font in those clips, so if anyone knows were they may show up or be obtainable from, it would be great for re-creation.
Anyway, I always thought that Jedi used a slightly different font than Star Wars but the pics above shows that they used the same, albeit a little taller, which makes font comparison a lot easier as the Jedi are in better quality!
The best match I've got is TradeGothic Bold, which is damn close. Another one is AlternateGotNo3D, but you must change the height and width etc. for them to fit. Any suggestions are welcomed, IMO the subtitles are as much a part of the films as the opening Crawl.

Ok, I’ve done my own recreated subtitles in AviSynth, I used “Trade Gothic Bold”, it’s not a perfect match but it’s the closest I’ve seen yet, some of the letters come closer in “AlternateGotNo3D” but overall I think “Trade Gothic Bold” is the closest match.
My scripting experience in AviSynth is limited so maybe someone can make a more compressed script out of it if you think it’s unnecessary long 😉
Keep in mind that these scripts are made with g-force stabilizing scripts in mind, that means that the placement of the subtitles will only be “correct” using his slightly different image cropping, also the PAL-version of Jedi which the script is based on have a slightly different cropping/framing than the NTSC-version. The SW subs are timed against Moth3r’s bootleg telecine and the Jedi subs are timed against the Empire of Dreams footage and Video Collector’s “theater performance” - Jedi bootleg. Some time ago I made an isolated score track for Alien using the Intrada cd release, mostly because I wanted to be able to see the film using the music as composed and not the appalling hackjob of the official mix. Gave some thought to trying to replace the music in the film itself, too, but it turned out to be rather difficult. I might go back to it at some point . . .
I thought the '99 Alien DVD included the isolated score, I may be wrong though. The 70mm six-track audio mix for Alien is known to be availabe on an old THX LD, that would be great to preserve! but that is another story.
Anyway, it's great to know that this project is going well, thanks for doing this!
