The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)
Time

This was always going to be more of a representation more than a restoration. I started this thing around May 5th and has just over 2 weeks to get this all the work done and  ready for the 30th anniversary, which really gave me no time at all. So some of the smaller changes and the fonts weren't one of the top priority when doing this. Some of the FX work took a lot longer than i had hoped which meant i had no time to do some of the smaller stuff, but i wasn't really too bothered about that to be honest.

Ok, I understand. Well, that makes the final result even more impressive!

I have an audio recording of a 70mm print and "you're lucky you don't taste very good" is there. What's oddly missing is the line "When we find Jabba the Hutt and that bounty hunter, we'll contact you" with no break in the music.

Anybody knows this "starmike" fellow, and can introduce him to hairy_hen ?

That guy should definitely be contacted!

I wanted to say thank you for this! You have created a damn impressive hybrid here, very professionally done especially the inserted matte paintings. It's sad you didn't have better material to work from as the only good thing about the 2004 footage is the resolution, you've done good improvements to it though. It must've been a hell to color-correct, the scenes that looks best to my eyes are the Dagobah scenes, just beautiful!

I'm sure you already know this and you've also said yourself it wasn't a 100% reconstruction but I just wanted to point these small things out if you consider to improve it sometime.

Still left in...

Also...which movie is the old Fox logo taken from? It looks great.

Anyway, thanks for a wonderful reconstruction!

AviSynth scripting help needed

The built-in subtitle filter (documentation here) can only do halos, not drop shadows. You could however use it twice, once with a black text colur, then the second instance in white text and shifted up/left a pixel or two.

And I thought this would be an easy task... ;) Excuse me if my questions sounding stupid here but I'm a complete amateur when it comes to Avisynth. I simply cannot understand how you fine adjust the positions of the subtitles in frame, it seems there's only x and y values for left, center, right and top, baseline and bottom, not small pixel adjustments. Do you have to change the horizontal or vertical size of the frame in the script somehow to make that happen? I have the same problem with this specific line of dialogue:

I can't get it to align in the center of the frame, only the second bottom line. It must be possible, right?

Well, this was more complicated than I thought ;) maybe I'll just use your old script and drop in TradeGothic...

I'm in the process of doing burned in subtitles for Greedo in SW and are wondering if it is possible in AviSynth to apply a little drop shadow behind the text? and if that is possible, how exactly do you make it or is there maybe some info regarding this sort of thing on the net someone can point me to, any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Info: - Greedo & Jabba subtitles, theatrical placement and fonts -
Time

I'm now 100% sure that STAR WARS and JEDI used the same font. You could previously see that the SW subs weren't equally tall as the Jedi font on the pictures above but when I tried to compare my recreated ones with Puggo's footage, I noticed that the footage in puggo's transfer was squished compared to the Gout, I don't know why that is, but I've updated the caps above. And you can now clearly see the similiarity between SW and the Jedi font.

I'm working on a script for avisynth at the moment in attempt to make a good recreation of the Greedo subtitles. An exact match of the positioning is unfortunately out of the question as you have to pay attention to TV overscan and different image cropping on the Gout. Will post the script when I'm done if anyone is interested.

HI-Res Poster Art

These things don't just fall out of the sky unfortunately..

Well, this time they'll do. ;) I have a nice little collection of hi-res posters of Star Wars, Empire and Raiders that's the best I've seen so far. My plan was to make them available to everyone as a sort of give back to this forum for everything I've gotten here as soon as some of them got colorcorrected, but maybe some of you can help me out with that. Especially the classic Tom Jung style A poster that I cannot manage to colorcorrect even though I have it hanging on my wall as a reference (I'm really bad at this;) So feel free to pm me if your photoshop skills are any good.

I don't know why d_j is having problems getting a successful AC3 encode from the uploaded stereo track--is anyone else having similar issues?  Maybe it's some kind of Mac/PC incompatibility?  I can do my own AC3 2.0 track and upload that if need be.

No problem here, I decoded it with Flac frontend and did an ac-3 2.0 448 kbps encode in Sonic Foundry Soft Encode. If you want, I can upload it for you dark_jedi.

J. Williams &amp; LSO, The EMPIRE STRIKES BACK <em>AUDIOPHILE EDITION</em> - Restored &amp; Remastered Score (Released)
Time

Thank you again ABC for your talent and perfectionism! I've only posted my comments on CD 2 directly to ABC but I just wanted to say that my first impression of his last version is that I think it's sounding very much like a good sounding vinyl recording, warm, airy and detailed. Some may be thinking that this version isn't an actual improvement at first listen and will not notice them so clearly, but imo. that's because in his earlier attempts many of the tracks stood out from the rest as sounding very good, in this version I think he have finally suceeded in making every track (even the worst ones) have the same signature of EQ and as a result sounding much more cohesive. Overall it's a great homage to the sound of the original album release, I still love the original wide "filmmixes" but this one will rotate in my player the most. Thank you! :)

Info: Other region DVD's &amp; Blu-ray's with Special content NOT available in the US.

Ok, this is kind of old news really but Escape From New York has the original Dolby stereo track included on many R2 DVD's. The 5.1 re-mix included on the MGM Special Edition is horrible and completely f***ed up. I did my own custum DVD with the original audio wich was very easy cause the R2 comes with the same transfer. (LD audio would be a even better alternative though)

The new european release of Suspiria on blu-ray and DVD has a questionable colortimed transfer with a newly re-mixed audio track that's supposed to be very good but not perfect as one line of dialouge in it is supposed to be missing.

I've found a spanish DVD of Suspiria that have the original english 4.0 audio mix downconverted to Dolby 2.0 and the audio on that disc got some good comments in this review:

http://www.zonadvd.com/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=196

Have any Suspiria fan heard if it's any good? I have the old Anchor Bay disc which have a wonderful transfer imo. but I can't stand the remixed audio tracks on it.

Thank you so much hairy_hen for what seems to be a very professionally done re-creation, I cannot comment on it properly right now as my precious receiver completely died just in time for your release. :( So at the moment I've only listened to it in stereo on my computer, but as far as I can tell, the sound editing is flawless! sure the replacements isn't equally dynamic but there's nothing you could do about that and you will only notice it in a few places if you know where to look for it, I also think the LFE channel are going to help mask that even better in some scenes. I was actually amazed how good it all blended together and sounds in this form, even better than I thought it would and that is only on my computer. Very well done! So far, this seems to be the best thing that's happened to this film since the restored Mono mix! THANK YOU! :)

-LFL Pwnage has the correct Greedo font. The ED 2 looks similar to the official font, but it's bigger and has different layout in some lines. The ED2 subs are much better looking IMO, but they are technically less correct as far as I can tell.

Actually, the LFL Pwnage doesn't have the correct font for Greedo, but it's a very well made approximate of the original theatrical font, as they only had the bootleg telecine as a reference to work from back then. It uses Franklin Gothic Demi Cond but Trade Gothic Bold or AlternateGotNo3D seems to be much closer for a recreation.
