Indeed, I similarly totally accept that soccer is not such a nurtured game in the States - I can well imagine parent's would hardly want a gifted sports son or daughter to persue soccer at the expense of the main sports in the US, which apart from garnering the highest revenue should they turn pro would expose them to greater respect (for want of a better word) from peers and society.

Soccer is of course the mainstay of British sports schooling and indeed holds the highest esteem - witness the small pond ripple of the Rugby World Cup won back in 2003 compared to what would be Knighting all of the players and the support staff should England win the World Cup this year (a very far probablity at the moment). I guess Rugby and Cricket are our Baseball and Basketball respectively.

As much as I think there should be tough penalties on those who commit potential career ending fouls, there should similarly be tough penalties on those that, like you say when stretchered off the field suddenly bounce back to full fitness. Hard to enforce, but if you're stretchered off (as opposed to hobble off) you should either be substituted or play no further part in the game. I have a feeling that would soon put an end to the fakers

I'm not baffled that the US doesn't (as a whole) like or get soccer, Zion.

In a bizarre way (please don't take this as US bashing or global empiricism), I think one of the main reasons the US will never accept it as a sport is that it's a game that the US can be beaten at, and quite convincingly by nations that are 30 times smaller in population than they are (Czech Republic). In sporting terms this does not and will never compute with the average American.

In regards to the officiating, it's actually been quite refreshing in comparison to some recent World Cups - I can understand that diving and faking can seem overplayed in replays, especially in slow motion - but the decisions made in the US v Italy game were in line with the new FIFA guidelines, the Mastroeni tackle could well have broken the opposing player's leg and I can quite understand the ref's decision.

When the only padding the players wear are shin protectors (shin pads) I think the officials should always err on the side of caution and penalise harshly those that are at fault, my personal opinion.

Absolutely ! It's a tall order, but people seem to be forgetting we're only 1 game down out of a possible 3 - there's a lot more football still to play !

I've watched Brian McBride - for one - many times (everytime my team play's Fulham !) and he's a quality, creative player.

Though I'd hardly say the US 94 team were "a handful of amatuers straight out of college": John Harkes (Derby), Tab Ramos (Real Betis), Roy Wegerle (Coventry City), and it's not like the US hadn't been around before then - 1950 World Cup against England anyone ? 1-0 to the USA I believe, there's a lot of history there

Warbler - there's no denying you obviously love your (American) football and there's no denying that all American's who have the same passion would "defend" their sport to the hilt.

However this is the World Cup thread, if you want to participate - that's fine, but this isn't the place to debate semantics between different sports.

Having lived in both the UK and US, I can say that nothing grips the *whole* nation like the World Cup finals in the UK. The reason being that - many greater social commentators than myself have pointed out that - every state in the US could practically be viewed as a small country; indeed some of your states *are* bigger than many participants in these finals. So football (US), baseball and basketball will all have their tribal followings and come the Superbowl every year people will watch it - even if their State's team isn't particpating and have a shared interest.

However your type of football isn't played the world over. Soccer is. There is no "WorldBowl" in football (US), baseball or basketball (bar Olympics) - there is in Soccer. This 4 year event absolutely unites the world, Togo gets the chance to play France, Portugal plays it's previous colony of Angola - this is a *worldwide* pursuit. Bar the ex-pats of the US, very few people would give two hoots about American football - let alone have the same interest in whatever the score refers to in your sig, sure the Japanese love their baseball - but nothing unites every country in the world like football (soccer). In Africa for example, I can guarantee that they wouldn't even know where to start in understanding the rules of American football, let alone play the game - but take 2 shirts and use them for goal-posts and kick a ball around and he, like the rest of that continent will find joy in the sport that will bring the next World Cup to one of their Countries (South Africa) and more importantly - their economy.

I'm not accusing you or trolling, far from it - join the chat if you want, but don't have the narrow-minded view that everyone in this (worldwide) forum should conform to what the norm is in the US. There's a much wider world out there, and currently that world has an interest in a competition that many in the US don't follow or have an interest in. That doesn't mean it doesn't count to those that are interested...

Rant over !

Plucky Croatia - should have come out from that game with at least a point ! Brazil looked complacent to the cusp of laziness !!

Hey joebshmoe,

I'll see what the Reverend makes of the discs, sent through were my masters (in terms of raw material capture), the last few weeks I've been fiddling with menus and the like - I'll see if it's the kind of material the Rev thinks should be out there, and then hopefully watch this space - it's far more organised now Reverend !

Official Release Thread - Alien Appendix - Updated with #2 info (Released)
Time
Right *pulls sleeves up* it's time for the next installment !

The original plan was to concentrate on a disc per film with as much as poss that wasn't included on the Quadrilogy. So it looks like Alien is the plan

Apart from Resurrection, there is of course the films themselves in their varying formats.

Alien "Bloated" version - with all scenes cut back in
Aliens CBS
Alien3 Workprint

Was the plan to avoid putting these out there ? Seems cruel not to let the people get what they want !

So let's gauge interest !

I'm now fully available after a work hiatus that had me going every hour in the day - no for some RnR in an Alien stylee

I love the optimism - but you've just made it twice as hard to get out of your group. Here's looking for McBride or Donovan to do a Cahill !

don't believe in superstition. but, as you know, anything's possible in the world cup.

Does that include scoring 3 goals in 20 minutes to even hope to progress out of the group stage !?

Now that was a good game from the neutral's perspective...

Cahill and Viduka were pretty damn solid, though as an Evertonian, I'm well aware of the hero/villain act that Cahill can pull within the same minute.

I'm presuming you're a red oojason - though I think Kewell is not so much deserving a bit of luck, but just not throwing his toys out of the pram as he has done in the last 2 major finals he's played for you - he was really anonymous after that initial burst in the first half hour (pony-tail or not) .

Two more down for me today as well - with Argentina v Ivory Coast tonight (come on Ivorians !).

Good result for England today - and superb seeing as Trinidad & Tobago held Sweden in a Herculean effort with 10 men. I have to say I've thoroughly enjoyed every match so far - long may it continue - Iran v Angola might not have the same appeal - but who knows
