Remember the mass advertising of TPM?
Time
While I'd agree that the advertising and marketing campaign for TPM was over the top with all the food and tie-ins and other crap, I put all the blame for the mass amounts of action figures on Hasbro (or was it still Kenner?) and the fans. Before TPM came out, they had released so little of the 1997 action figure line that the fans were screaming for more quantities. Yeah, it was mostly brain dead Hasbro (1 Boba Fett per case, you gotta be kidding me!), but when TPM came out, you couldn't escape it. I remember seeing aisles FULL of Jar Jar figures. Gee, did they really think this character was going to be that popular? For a while, I couldn't find anything except Jar Jar. You'd think he was the only character in the movie. But again, I blame that partially on the fans that were screaming for more quantities.

Of course, the rest of the blame lies squarely with LFL and Hasbro.

Expecting too much of George Lucas?

I must point out that, whether deserved or not, Star Wars fans have a reputation for being socially inept, borderline-retarded geeks.

I am honored to know dozens of die-hard Star Wars fans who do not fit that description at all ... but have also come across many who fit the stereotype to a "T."

I might also suggest that Lucas has had contact with or information about only the geeks who are star-struck or fantatical enough to have tried to get in contact with him, tried to break into Lucasfilm headquarters, or bothered him or his minions at public appearances. I would not be surprised if he has a skewed vision of Star Wars fans ... though I most certainly fault him for not bothering to find out the truth ... that there are tons of such fans who are wonderful people that can function just fine in society, will indeed have sex with their girlfriends, and don't need to press a button on their stormtrooper costume to have their mother come pick them up.

I don't think this is true at all. In fact, I'd suggest the exact opposite. He's shielded himself from fans because he thinks they're like that. Now that he finally came out of his hole, he's realizing that the majority of them are not like that. As an example, he's getting 200 troopers from the 501st (fan organization) to march in the Rose Parade on New Years day. That doesn't sound like a guy that's shying away from fans. He was also at C3 and got to witness thousands of fans himself, very few of which are the stereotypical fanatics. He may have had a skewed vision before, but it was only because he believed they were like that based on nothing but his own prejudices. Now that he's coming out in public more, he's finding that his prejudices were mostly wrong.

He didn’t possess the mind to create the art that you wanted to see. That’s it. Disagree with his choices all you want, but he made the movie he wanted to make. Some folks didn’t like it, some did. But you not liking the SE or the prequels doesn’t make the artist inadequate.

Actually, I'd say he didn't make the movie he wanted to make, not originally. The movie he wanted to make still hasn't been made yet. He quite clearly doesn't "possess the mind" to think on a practical level, which is why he needed all those people before to tell him "No, it can't be done that way". He needed that in order to come up with different ways to get his vision across. Of course, no one tells him no now, and it shows.

Yeah, he wrote it and directed it, but it takes more than a writer and director to make a movie. Let's take away all the actors and crew and see what we're left with

Unlike like other directors that flat out say "I made the movie I wanted to make the first time out" he doesn't say that. At last check, I think he said he's still only 90% happy with it. That doesn't sound like someone telling us he's made the movie he wants to make. It sounds more like someone saying "well, it's not quite what I wanted, but it's getting close" as they continually go back and tinker.

If there are par2 files, grab the first one and run it against what you've downloaded. That'll tell you how many more blocks you need in total to repair it. Then just get the required number of blocks (par1+something, par2+something). The "something" is the number of blocks that file will repair. That way you don't have to grab all the par2 files if you only need 1 block.

Once you've repaired it, you should be able to extract the files without any errors. I use QuickPar for checking par and par2 files against rars.

Info Wanted: anyone doing an AOTC - IMAX Edit (?)

It was originally a straight "yes". The "Uh-huh" works a lot better considering what was suppose to have just happened. I still can't believe "Yes" ever made it past the shoot. It was completely jarring the first time I saw it and made it seem like Padme just tripped rather than falling from a flying vehicle into hot desert sand.

It might be possible to piece together an IMAX edit from everyones memories (I know that's not the preferred way). If I'm not mistaken, the fireplace scene was either drastically reduced or completely removed. I want to say that it was completely removed since, IMHO, it was the worst scene of the movie. I don't know about the rest of you, but I wouldn't expect a woman to dress like that and then tell me we couldn't be together

Get more memory Seriously, that's the only way I've found to speed Xnews up. The only other free usenet programs I know of are BNR (Binary News Reader) which has a crappy interface and GrabIt which has a "large groups" bug. With GrabIt, any group with a lot of articles, like a.b.x or a.b.dvd just won't show the articles after updating. You either have to use binsearch.info to create an nzb or you have to update the group in chunks through GrabIt. I use binsearch right now to create an nzb file. The only problem with this is that you can't browse the group. You have to know what you're looking for in order to find anything.

I think Newsbin is a better program, but it's not free and I've had no experience with it.

News on the TV Series if Anyone Cares.

If you want more, restore and remaster the original versions of the original trilogy and release them. Then retire comfortably with your loving family. Everyone will be happy.

Last time I heard, they had a deal for 5 seasons (100 episodes I think). Of course, at the time, rumors were that the TV series would follow Luke. Yeah, they were going to follow Luke on Tattooine. Maybe they planned to show all the adventures a young moisture farmer can have on a desolate planet in the middle of nowhere. Sure sounds exciting to me

Ring tones?
Time
Either one. I managed to find a site where I can upload either midi or mp3s (my phone can do both), but I need to add WAP to my phone to download the songs. Considering that I want quite a few, it's probably worth the $5 extra a month for WAP service, at least for long enough to get all the ringtones I want (which is quite a few). The site I found is zedge.net. If you know of any others, let me know.

Ring tones?
Time
I just got a new phone from T-Mobile. Anyone know where I can get some Star Wars ring tones for it (preferably free). The last phone I had was a Sprint phone and there's a site where you can upload your own ringtones and then download them to the phone. If something similar exists for T-Mobile, that would be perfect.

Thanks!

Why LFL is actually cool (I know we need some reasons right now)...

Yes, that's what I meant by their taking a few missteps in the beginning. They learned quickly, though, that it's much better to look the other way on strict enforcement of copyright for the sake of letting the fans flourish... as that can only be good for the company and fan relations in the end.

Whoops! I totally missed that part of your message. My eyes flew right over the first paragraph and skipped the rest. My apologies.

And no, none of those sites make money from Star Wars specifically. They make money from ads and partnerships from Star Wars licensees, so they're essentially making more money for GL, not themselves.

If Star Wars flopped....
Time
I think zombie nailed it.

As for me, I wouldn't own nearly as much Star Wars merchandise as I do now. I'd probably still own the toys that came out after the first movie (assuming they would've made any), but probably none after that. No figures, books, statues, comics, etc, etc because they simply wouldn't exist. Instead, I'd have a house full of Lord of the Rings items (I didn't read the books until just before the movies came out, but I was instantly hooked). I'd still be a huge Sci-Fi fan, but I obviously wouldn't be able to say my favorite character is Yoda (it'd be either Luke or Han in that case) and I wouldn't be a huge fan of Jedi and Jedi lore.

So other than having a lot more money (or having spent it on a different franchise), I don't think I'd be much different than I am today. Aside from my vast collection of Star Wars items, my life and career weren't as affected by the movie. I'm an IT Manager with a passion for all things computers, so that wouldn't have changed anything. My wardrobe obviously wouldn't be made up of Star Wars shirts though

Oh great. So the TV show is going to be another Shadows of the Empire. If there's one thing I hated about that book, it was all the stupid fan boy questions that were answered (like visible lasers). Even answering the question of "can a lightsaber cut through a magnetically shielded door" should have been left alone, but that one didn't bother me nearly as much as "It wasn't the actual shot, just the pointing beam that comes before the shot". Ugh, stupid!

Funny enough, the Master Replica FX sabers are better for dueling than the toy sabers.

Actually, MR sabers break fairly easily (unless they've fixed that by now). You can fight with them as long as you're careful. If you hit them to hard, the blade snaps at the hilt.

I use to fight with the Kenner ones all the time. That was a lot of fun. Now I fight with Parksabers, which is a lot more fun since the blades don't break

Since there was nothing else better coming out and Leonardo de Caprio was a giant chick magnet at the time, it wasn't hard for it to make back all its money.

Everything reeks of milking the cash cow. From the figures to the TV series to the rereleased DVDs. This coming from a man that said he would be done with Star Wars once ROTS came out. Move on my ass. I think he's going to find out that if it doesn't say Star Wars, no one wants it from him. And if it does say Star Wars, a lot of people are giving it more scrutiny lately.
