2006 OT DVD: Poll: So What are You Going to Do?
Time
I haven't read or heard most of what you guys have (I was just to young at the time), but I remember reading or hearing about him trying to figure out what would make Luke react a certain way in ROTJ. He couldn't figure out what would make him come out of the shadows and attack Vader. Then it hit him. Make Leia his sister. So even that idea didn't come around until he wrote ROTJ.

I'm with most of you though. I got so tired of hearing him say "The story was always written and this is always the way it was suppose to be". Bullshit. If that's true, he would've cast someone young for the Anakin reveal and they would've had Greedo shoot first when they were originally filming the scene. As it is, they had 3 different people playing Darth Vader. There's no reason they couldn't have added a fourth.

I'm on the fence about the OOT DVD now. They do look good, but I'm waiting for more reviews and comparisons to fan made ones before I make a final decision.

How George Lucas created the O-OT fanbase...

But doesn't that mean dual lasers in the drives? CDs and DVDs use the same color lasers (red) whereas hi-def DVDs use blue (don't they?). Having a multi-format burner/player for CDs and DVDs is relatively easy. Having one for BD and HD will be considerably more difficult. Assuming Sony makes a Christmas release for the PS3, there'll be a ton of players hitting the market suddenly, I just don't know if people will want to use a game console to watch their BD movies. I occasionally use my PS2 to watch DVDs, but it's definitely not my primary player.

And I still can't understand why the movies that have been released on blu-ray aren't using the VC-1 codec. It's sure leaving a bad taste in the early adopters mouths.

Dude, no matter what you think of Lucas and the way he treats Star Wars, it certainly isn't woth his life. I mean, come on, it's a movie. You think he deserves to die over this? Please, do us all a favor and get some help...for yourself.

We don't expect high-definition versions yet, as those formats are just too new.

Especially when considering that it gives yet another opportunity for Lucas to rape your wallet a few more years down the line.

Wasn't Lucasfilm supposed to be on the cutting edge of technology? How far the mighty have fallen ...

Look how long it took them to release Star Wars (albeit the SEs) on DVD. They don't seem to have been at the forefront of technology for a long time.

It's all really stupid anyway. They're taking out the smoking, but they're leaving in the violence (hitting each other with hammers, cutting each other to bits with saws). I think I'd be more worried about someone smashing me over the head with a giant hammer than I would be with someone smoking a cigarette next to me. The cigarette's going to take, what, 30-50 years to kill you, but the hammer can do it with one blow. So which one is worse again?

It's not analoguos at all. If NASA really wanted what was on those tapes, they could get it. There are companies in existence today that can read all tapes of backup tapes, even dating back 20 or 30 years. If they really wanted to spend the money, they could contract it out to a company to have all the media cataloged and labeled properly. And besides all that, I'm sure they've got most of the information on servers spread throughout the agency. No one I know makes backups and then deletes the original data (except maybe LFL )

This may be stating the obvious, but:
make sure you're using a Usenet client (e.g. GrabIt) and not an IRC or ICQ client.

I've used Trillian to get on IRC before, I just can't do anything past get into rooms. :/ I just wanted to get on, period. But I shall try GrabIt.

That's all you'll be able to do with an IRC client like Trillian. If you want to do anything beyond getting into rooms, you'll either need to learn some advanced IRC commands or use a client like mIRC. Besides all that, those two programs do completely different things. Yes, Trillian can be used to get on IRC, but not on usenet. GrabIt is a good, if a bit buggy, usenet reader. Usenet and IRC are two completely separate things. Trillian is good for IRC (though I recommend mIRC) while GrabIt is good for Usenet.

Alcohol 120 is used a lot in gaming circles. Alcohol and Daemon tools are the most prevalent since they can both mount image files and Alcohol can burn them. If you don't have WinRar, you could always download the free version of Daemon tools, mount the MDF, and then burn the files with whatever program you want.

Star Wars isn't the only one...

Pac-Man was just a joystick and a couple of buttons (for choosing how many players) though. Get yourself a big enough monitor (19-21"), a PC, and a large wooden enclosure, and you'd be set. It should be fairly easy to make it look just like the real thing, even though it's just be a ROM running off a PC running DOS. You could probably even run it in windows and just get a USB joystick.

The definitive list: changes you can and can't stand...
Time
Cons: Anything after 1997. Greedo shooting was bad enough, Han stepping on Jabba's tail was over the top, and Hayden in place of Shaw was completely over the line. We didn't need Boba in the first movie and we REALLY didn't need him to look straight at the camera! The Sarlacc didn't need that stupid ala Little Shop of Horrors either (not knocking that movie, just the beak in ROTJ). The Emperor didn't need changing and neither did the speech. Jedi Rocks blows and Yub Nub will always be my fav.

Pros: The cleanup. That's about the only thing about the SEs that I liked. That and Cloud City being more open was a nice touch. I kind of liked the additional Bigg's scene, but I also agree that he shouldn't have been introduced at that point. It adds a little to his character, but not enough that anyone besides a core fan (reads the books and all that) will care anymore about him. Luke's scream at the end of ESB was tolerable but unnecessary (I always felt he was at peace when he let go). I do like the new end song in ROTJ, but Yub Nub is still my favorite.

Any other changes after the 1997 SEs were completely unnecessary.
