Not quite. They had most of the line. It was "Truth, justice, and all that other good stuff". Kind of annoying personally. The moment he said it I knew it was kind of an anti-American slant. A friend of mine really hated it, to the point of "The movie sucked". Whether or not the current administration isn't doing things the right way, the line should not have been changed. Truth and justice are the American way.

Regarding V for Vendetta, I didn't really see it as pointing out things about Muslim countries. I saw it as pointing out where things were headed in America. Again, it looked like another anti-America propaganda movie to me.

Interestingly enough, if you aren't aware of when LOTR was written, it also looks like a warning for America against where we could be heading. So the current atmosphere can certainly paint a movie in the wrong perspective.

Look at how ”no, there is another” was handled. He wrote and filmed that scene before he had any idea at all who the other actually was. He was letting a finished film be released to the theaters with a cliff hanger scene used to set up the next movie - as well as a possible second trilogy - and yet he had no idea about who was being referenced - in his own story. It’s one thing to hash out ideas in a story or script - and I’m sure it’s routine in the business - but he actually filmed a very open-ended plot hole. A plot hole he never resolved properly.

Man, that's sloppy.

I agree, and when I am rationalizing, I am pulling at straws! This is what happens when you write these trilogies one movie at a time, there are things that just don't work out if you inspect them with a fine tooth comb. LOTR is a perfect example of a movie trilogy that flows fluidly because it was planned that way from the books to the big screen, as they honestly feel like one big movie instead of 3 individual movies like the OT. I still love the OOT very much, so even though you guys are shooting holes in my theories, I still love it enough to overlook it.

Actually, the LOTR books work out wonderfully. The movies not so much (at least if you listen to the commentaries). Things were changed so much in TTT that they then had to change things in ROTK, even though they didn't want to.

I agree about everything else though.

Trouble with WD SATA Raid Controller
Time
Right, just thought I'd point that out.

It not being WD may be an issue. WD doesn't have any support for SATA controllers on their website. If it's an SIIG or the other one they list, he can check those sites for updated drivers.

Also, he may need to go into the cards configuration and set it for 1 drive. If the card is being detected and is working and he just can't see the drive, that's a step that WD actually lists on their website.

Trouble with WD SATA Raid Controller

I've been following this a little bit guys. Let me see if I can help at all.

What's the exact model and manufacturer of the controller card? I'm checking out Western Digital's website right now, but they don't list any controller cards made by them. The one that looks closest is the SIIG. Is that it? It's a 2 channel SATA RAID controller card.

What does Windows identify it as?

The card could be bad, but let's try a few more things before returning it.

EDIT: Signed or not signed, the drivers should work. Also, not being on the HCL just means they didn't submit it to MS for testing. There's plenty of hardware not on that list that works perfectly with XP.

Killing off Luke, Leia, Han, or even Artoo or Threepio would have been a bigger deal. Chewie is actually the very logical choice. If they did it so we would be afraid they might kill Luke, why not go the extra mile and actually kill Luke and let Chewie live. Killing a secondary character doesn't equate killing off the hero.

I believe Luke was off limits per Lucas. I don't remember what the reason was for Leia and Han, but I believe it had something to do with them being more important. They basically tried to find a character that would have an effect on everyone. Chewie was picked and Lucas approved. It was up to the author to decide how he died. It was the publishers that insisted a major character die. They felt that there wasn't enough drama in the books anymore. They wanted us, the readers, to actually be afraid because a major character could die.

Artoo and Threepio weren't felt to have enough weight. They're simply droids. Yes, they've been around for a while and everyone's attached to them, but would their "deaths" have the same impact that another character's death would? Probably not.

As far as I can tell, they haven't killed any other major characters (or should I say the big 3, Luke, Leia, and Han). They've killed off major EU characters (I believe Jacen Solo was killed or was it Anakin Solo?), but they haven't killed off any other movie characters. Luke is dead in the new Legacy comic, but it's set in the distant future and he died of natural causes, he wasn't killed.

Again, it goes back to the previous comment. It was done to make Star Wars "more real". Star Wars is suppose to be fun. If we want real, we'll watch the evening news.

Bilingual education isn't about being able to speak with our neighbors. Bilingual education is about teaching the spanish speaking kids in two languages in the hope that if they don't pick up the english (they won't), they'll learn from the spanish. If you want kids to be able to speak more than one useful language, teach them more than just spanish. Personally, I've never known anyone in a high enough position in life that spoke spanish. Chinese, Japanese, French, or German maybe, but not Spanish. I should probably call it Mexican though. The spanish that Mexican's speak isn't the same as the spanish that Spain speaks.

I think you'll find that most of the rest of the world teaches their children multiple languages (not just the home language and English), but that their signs and other things are only in the home language. As another poster said, when in Rome, do as the Romans, but apparently when in America, do as you've always done.

With respect to the language of a ghetto, I'd agree. Everywhere I've seen large mexican communities, it looks like a hole. It's not a place I want to be in or stay at. I'd much rather be in an upscale, affluent area where people keep their stuff clean.

As for updated, I've been busy with some things, but things are comming along.

FLAC is a lossless compressed WAV. So unlike mp3, there's no quality loss. WAV is fully uncompressed. You should be able to decompress the FLAC files to WAV files and then burn those on a CD as an Audio CD. Again, the advantage is that you don't lose any quality. If you did that with mp3, you'd end up with missing information since mp3 throws away information in order to get a smaller file size.

rar is commonly used in newsgroups since you can split a large file into multiple rar files (that's really what rar's claim to fame is). Other than that, zip is still the dominant form of compression.

They're only linking to videos that can be found elsewhere. The site's only been up since the 17th.

EDIT: I'm watching 300 right now. The quality doesn't look that bad. Sure I'm not on a 42" LCD screen (little 17" CRT), but it looks good enough to watch. I'm kind of surprised that the places hosting the videos are still up.

Do you think the display is eye catching?
Yes

Do you think you would notice this display at a till of a store?
Yes

Would you be tempted to buy the box set displayed?
Not the way it looks right now, no. If it really looked like a Death Star and it really contained a remastered anamorphic OUT, then yes.

Do you think the Darth Vader and Leia characters on the stand are iconic?
Yes, but Leia should be in her white gown, not the Hologram figure.

Do you think the design of the box set is interesting?
Yes. I think I would almost rather see a Darth Vader head for the actual box though. I think that would be more recognizable to the average person than a Death Star.

Would you display the box set?
Yes either way (Darth Vader head or Death Star)

Would you automatically associate the box with star wars?
Yes

Is there enough information on the box?
Yes

Would you pick the shaped box set over normal DVD cases?
Yes

That's interesting, especially when he (Salvatori) said the exact opposite everywhere else. He said at Comic-Con that when he was commissioned to do the book and they told him he had to kill Chewie, that he basically gave the check back to them. Once they had him convinced that it had to be done and that Lucas had blessed it, he told them that he would do it his way. They were fine with that, so we have the heroic death.

The only reason I mention that they wanted to make it more real is, again, because the publishers themselves said that. Again, at Comic-Con, they said Star Wars didn't really have any drama since you always knew the main characters would survive. By killing Chewie, they were telling the readers that no one is safe so anyone can die. That way, if Luke got into some kind of peril, you couldn't automatically assume he'd find a way out because anything was now possible. Hence, making it more real.

I honestly don't remember seeing anywhere which character was killed when Vector Prime first came out. All I heard was that a major character had died. I had to search Google to find out. I'm a slow reader, so I wouldn't have found out until a year later at the least.

I think most of the hostility came from the "superweapon of the week". Every Star Wars book that came out, for the longest time, was nothing but yet another remnant of the Empire with yet another superweapon. That gets tiring real fast.

After that, the single most impactful event of all EU happened. Chewie was killed. That was done to "make Star Wars more real". That turned off yet another large group of fans. I think that's what turned me off. I read it through, and it's a good book, I just don't like the whole idea of "making it more real". If I want real, I'll turn on the evening news. When I watch Star Wars or read a book or comic, I want to escape. I want to watch (or read) my favorite heroes struggle with something and then come out on top. Who cares if you know they're not going to die? Nobody cares anyway unless they release a book with "A key player in the Star Wars universe dies!" I think that's become the "superweapon of the week". When I hear about a major character dying, I just say "Oh yeah, who'd they kill this time?" What's the point of making it "more real" if there's no more shock value in it?

Anyway, the Thrawn Trilogy is still hailed as the best. The NJO series was pretty good too, I just don't like it on principal (I don't like investing time in a bunch of characters just to see them all killed off). I personally don't like the way the NJO ended (no, I haven't fully read them all), mostly because I think it turned into a political commentary of the last 50 years instead of staying in the realm of Sci-Fi.

I do read all the comics though. They have a tendency not to kill major characters in the comics. That makes them a lot funner to read

I missed GL but at the same time I didn't get pneumonia from standing out in the rain all night.

You'll kick yourself when you read this then. I volunteered to work that event. I got to see Lucas twice (I had two wristbands because I needed one to get in for the first showing and I had received a second one the night before from the volunteer coordinator for the second viewing). I almost went in for the third show because as I headed back to my room to get some sleep, there was no line and one of the staff called out "Anyone that wants to see Lucas, come this way!" To everyone's amazement, the line had completely disappeared by the third show and there was plenty of room. This was around 10am I believe.

I'm sure that's a big reason why this time the store is running 24 hours a day.

Not only that, but they practically got shutdown Saturday morning when they tried to leave everyone outside in the freezing cold rain. The local authorities essentially told them to get everyone inside or they'd shut it all down. I don't know when that line started (it was the line for GL), but it was insane when I saw it at 4:30am (ran down streets and around several buildings).

It was an awesome sight, but it was also completely crazy.

Sure, LA is not centrally located - in the United States. But really when you think about how many people come from other countries, it makes a lot more sense to have it in a city that is easier to get to from an international standpoint.

If pre-registration sales are down compared to C3, it isn't because of the location. It's because there isn't a new Star Wars movie coming out. The first three Celebrations happened right before the theatrical premieres of each prequel. C2 easily had many more attendees than C1, and C3 had close to twice as many as C2. (And that is why your lines to get into C3 were so bad lj. It's hard to get 40,000+ people into a convention smoothly when people start lining up hours before the doors open. I had a volunteer badge, so I just walked right in. ) C2's lines were horrible (my friend waited in line for 8 hours to get Carrie Fisher's autograph). But aside from the store line, C3 really wasn't that bad.

I would add that people may not be coming also because of the bad experience encountered at the previous 3 celebrations. I only went to C3 so I could "complete the trilogy". It was icing on the cake that George was there (at the time). I honestly hoped that they wouldn't have a C4, but if they did, that it would be in LA so I could go just one day (if I wanted).

I think the other problem with getting that many people in is that they're all only going through 1 set of doors (at Indy). I always use Comic-Con as an example because they regularly have more than that amount of people and until two years ago, they didn't seem to have any trouble getting people inside. Personally I think that's because they open all the front doors and badges aren't checked until you're in the lobby. Comic-Con knows how to do it, but Lucas turned them down because they wanted to have full control. Oh well.

Seeing the Saga in order - a review by a first-time viewer....
Time
I like the idea of the 4-5-1-2-3-6 order. I also like the idea of the 4-5-part of 6-1-2-3-rest of 6 order. I think an awesome fan edit could be done that cuts back to the PT at just the right spot and plays through from there. Either cut in ROTJ right after Obi-Wan and Luke talk about his father, or cut somewhere else.

Another idea, that others have mentioned, would be cutting everything after Anakin "dies" so we don't see him or Palpatine after that. Cut Yoda saying goodbye to Chewie. I don't know if you could still show him lifting off or not, even though it doesn't really matter. Leave everything else with Yoda and Obi-Wan and let ROTS end the way it does. Reincorporate the scene with Yoda landing on Dagobah so we know he ended up there. Then we don't see Vader until ANH (just echoing previous statements).

That would be awesome!
