And machine guns have been illegal in America since sometime in the 70's. The other semi-automatic rifles that you might see from time to time are just that, semi-automatic.

There's a shooting range in Nevada (near Las Vegas) where you can shoot an Uzi, but to my knowledge, you can't own an Uzi in any state. I may be wrong on that though, living in California tends to make one think that anything "bad" is banned everywhere.

Has this been confirmed by the police? Seems a little unnecessary given that he must have known if he didn't kill himself that he'd have been caught.

If the numbers are filed out doesn't it mean he probably got them illegally somewhere? No gun control law would have prevented this tragedy in that case, would it?

No. It means the numbers were filed off at some point. It's quite possible that he filed them off himself.

No gun control law would have prevented this, period.

I wonder how many of the other students have ever been out shooting targets. A Glock is not a complicated weapon to fire or reload. The 22 he had probably isn't complicated either. Being able to quickly shoot and reload with those weapons is not a big accomplishment. Anyone with any exposure to firearms would be able to do so quickly. He wouldn't need more than a few sessions at a shooting range and there was more than enough time for that.

A P.A. system that could cover the whole campus is about as likely as a P.A. system covering a whole city. And you wouldn't want to come on it and say that there has been a murder on campus because chances are it was simply that, just a murder. All you are going to do is throw people into panic. Nobody could have forseen what was coming. They need to leave the administration alone. It was no more their faults than it was the faults of the victims. If there had been a call after the murder with a threat that they were going to go on a rampage, then it would have been time to track down all students and evacuate them. However, this was not the case.

Just as a point of clarification, PA systems covering whole cities have been used in the past. Think of an air raid horn. The concept is the same, but instead of having a horn, you'd have someone's voice.

I'm not saying they could have done more. I'm honestly not sure that they could have. I'm just saying that it's worth looking at. If the system can't be improved, then it can't be improved and it's that simple. Perhaps the best thing that could be done is what was done: text messaging and video phones were put to good use.

I'm not sure if there is a better way to inform the entire student and faculty body of danger than e-mail.

I heard something about text messaging.

Thats at least 150 bullets. How many bullets in a clip?

Generally speaking only 10 due to the Federal High Capacity magazine ban from several years ago. Scratch that. I just checked Wikipedia. That ban expired in 2004. In that case, without knowing the exact model of the guns, I'd go with the high end. A Glock 19 (9mm) has a 15 round capacity. A Glock 18 can use a high capacity magazine that carries 33 rounds, but I doubt he had one of these. The magazine is gigantic and doesn't look like it could easily be hidden. As for a 22, those can have as many as 18 rounds. So the two guns combined along with 2 clips for each weapon to reload with could have killed 33 people.

How many were wounded?

I referred to lots of "theys" in my post. One of the theys would be police detectives (finding the receipt). The other they I'm assuming is the one you're referring to. I'm not sure what you're trying to say though. Does every campus in the country have some kind of system to notify students? No, they don't. Are other schools implementing something in the wake of this? Yes, they are. UCLA is updating their systems (saw it on the news this morning). I'm sure other students are doing something similar.

Yes, it's a large campus. That doesn't mean there isn't technology available to have a campus wide PA system or even some kind of general alarm.

Regarding text messaging, from what I've heard and read, it was the students texting each other. This seems to have had a far better effect than the emails the administration sent to all the students. Texting, IMing, picture, and video phones all played a much larger role than the emails seemed to have. Perhaps schools can require students to register their mobile phone numbers with the main office (or at least make it optional). If there's an emergency, a system wide message can be sent to all the phones explaining what's going on and where to go/what to do. That may not work but it's definitely an option to consider.

Maybe not. They found a receipt for the guns. They were purchased in March. Two guns that hold 10 rounds each (federal hi-cap mag ban) gives him 20 bullets. He may have (very likely) reloaded between the first shooting and the second. It's also likely that he had at least 2 extra clips for each gun (kinda hard to kill 32 students with only 20 bullets, unless some of those bullets went through multiple people).

Regarding the lockdown, I'm kind of torn. Sure, maybe they didn't realize he was still on the loose. But here's a question. Two students were first killed. They shutdown that building and assumed the situation was under control (based on what I don't know). Maybe they looked through that building, found no one, and assumed the gunman had left the campus. In that case, there's still the possibility of a gunman on the loose. It's also possible that they had started to look through the building, but hadn't completed the search yet. Either way, IMO, a gunman was on the loose. They did send out emails to students telling them to stay in their rooms. Would it not have been better to sound some kind of alarm? I know if I was in a situation like this, email is the last tool I would consider using. There must be some kind of automated system that can dial all the dorm rooms. Failing that, send administration people out to the separate buildings to start notifying students. Send an email as well, but don't let that be the only tool you use. It's been reported that several students were walking between classes at the time the emails were sent. That means they weren't at a computer and couldn't receive email.

I'm not saying the administration didn't try to warn students, I'm saying that I don't think they tried hard enough. Of course, I don't believe they should be fired either. They made a mistake. They need to learn from it and put systems in place (assuming systems aren't there already) to inform large numbers of students quickly and easily.

It looks like MoveAlong is helping seed this again. I stopped mine yesterday because it looked like the leech that was grabbing it had completed and then stopped his seeding. I see he (or she) hasn't completed it yet though (yes, they're a leech. they've been a member since last august and have less than a 1 ratio).

I'll see if I can jump back on tonight and seed some more in order to help out.

Kinda funny how even Babelfish can do better than these guys eh?

It actually looks like they used Babelfish to do the translation. Maybe someone can do the other 5 movies so we can have a full set. Do the subtitles come out similarly when they're put through the fish? Might be an interesting experiment to try.

Don Imus and the race issue thread.
Time
Well how about all the people saying that what he said makes their accomplishments meaningless. How's that? How does what he said do anything to their accomplishments? I didn't even know who Imus was until he made those comments. Even the day he made them, I saw headlines on Google News referencing Imus and I completely ignored them. It wasn't until the next day watching Fox News that I even began to find out who he was or what he'd said. And again, how does it hurt their accomplishments? And if it does hurt their accomplishments, how does firing him repair that? All firing him did was let CBS and MSNBC distance themselves from him.

So unless they're losing a scholarship or their grades suddenly tumble from some kind of emotional stress, I fail to see how his comments did anything to hurt them. Since the girls themselves have said how stupid the comments were knowing what they've accomplished, I don't think its had any effect on them whatsoever.

I predict that Don Imus we'll be reemployed in a month on satellite radio. There are plenty of examples of this happening before. One radio station in the Inland Empire has already started playing "The Best of Imus". Within a week he'll be forgotten. Within a month, he'll be on satellite and most of his 3 million listeners will follow. His firing has cost CBS 15 million dollars. Someone out there is surely ready and willing to bring him on in order to bring in that much revenue.

I could be wrong about all this, but judging from the average American's attention span, I think he'll have a job in no time.

Why could Serenity be seen as conservative lordjedi? And do you think of X-men as conservative? I'm having a hard time comparing movies to political views. I never watch them in that way, searching for a political message. Especially sci-fi. Although Equilibrium got me thinking about government control a bit.

Others have explained why I think Serenity is conservative. Government interference with private citizens and all that. Ultimate control to achieve peace which ultimately backfires. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

But it also has the leave them alone and let them live their lives thing going for it. I think the problem with X-Men is that the government is trying to tell everyone that they can use their powers for evil.

Like the Patriot act?

The Patriot Act did nothing but spell out what could and was already done in certain circumstances. Try reading it sometime and then look at what was done before it. Nothing in the Patriot Act was new. And if you still don't like it, remember that only 1 Senator had the guts to vote no on it. So everyone in DC is at fault as far as I'm concerned.

X-Men I'm not sure about. It has the whole segregation vs integration going for it. But it also has the leave them alone and let them live their lives thing going for it. I think the problem with X-Men is that the government is trying to tell everyone that they can use their powers for evil. But anything can really be used for evil. If you're a hammer, everything's a nail. I think X-Men is more about racism than liberal or conservative. There are racists on both sides of the aisle.

Another liberal movie, though it may not seem like it, is Jarhead. Yeah, I know it takes place during the first Gulf War, but it really looked like it was making fun of Marines. A guy basically wrote a book about his time over there and some Hollywood dork ripped it apart and made a movie out of it. I have two friends that have been in the Marines and both of them say that movie is nothing like being in the Marines. I think there's a couple of "real" depictions, one being when the shit was being burned (my Air Force brother has told me about those) and the other is at the end when the commander stops the sniper to watch the bad guy get bombed. Everything else in that movie was crap.

Star Trek IV: Save the Whales is another one. I'm having a real hard time coming up with titles that are either liberal or conservative. I tend to watch a lot of Action, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy, so unless there's an overt political message (there usually isn't), I don't notice it. Serenity could possibly be seen as conservative, though the backstory, I think, falls more in line with the Civil War than anything else.

EDIT: The thread title and mention of Clinton who knows how many times is what's making those ads show up. That and whoever mentioned those authors names.

Let's try this. Joss Whedon, Buffy, Angel, FireFly, Serenity, X-Men. Maybe that'll mix things up a bit.

Windows Vista

I worked with it a little here at work for some testing. It won't run about half our software (our software is getting old though, so it's time to upgrade). There aren't a lot of drivers available for it either. That will change as manufacturers update their drivers.

Vista, in my mind, is no different from OS X now. It has the same hardware requirements (we have a Mac downstairs that has a gig of RAM and a 3D card, which is mostly all that Vista needs). It does the same thing about asking whether or not you want to allow or deny things (Macs do this if you're doing things "outside the norm"). Once the computer is all setup though, it won't ask you those questions (assuming you don't add and remove software constantly).

I personally don't like it because we'll have to upgrade all our software and I need to adjust my login scripts. Our anti-virus and contact management don't run on it. Our VPN software doesn't run on it. So right now, all our new machines continue to be purchased with XP. Once we upgrade all our software though, I won't have a problem with upgrading to Vista.

Exactly Ferris. That's exactly how I plan to do it. Start with an empty weapon. Teach him the basics of how it works and how deadly it is. Move on to a loaded weapon once he's a little older.

The point is to remove any ignorance about the weapon. Give him an understanding of how they look, feel, and operate. Once the understanding is there, he'll stand a much better chance of handling things correctly if he comes across one in the wrong situation (like finding one randomly in someone elses house).

And Arnie, perhaps Clinton should learn to keep it in his pants, that way he won't have to answer questions like that.

I think The Patriot would fall into a strictly conservative category. I remember the outcry from the left when they showed the kids using guns. Oh the horror!

For the record, I have a son now. I'll be showing him how to safely handle firearms at a young age (he's 4 months old, as soon as he can hold things is when I start). Children shouldn't, imo, be taught to fear firearms. They at least need to be taught to get an adult if they find one. At best they should be taught how to use and/or disarm one. Even if you don't want your kids using guns, at least teach them to get an adult if they find one. Not knowing what a gun can do and not knowing to get an adult if one is found can be disastrous.

It wasn't about what he did! It's about lying under oath (ya know, perjury and all that other stuff).

Didn't even admit he was wrong. Ofcourse he doesn't, he thinks he's carrying out Gods plan for the world.

Yep, he made up all that evidence and everyone else believed it too. The British government and plenty of Democratic Senators. He made it all up and everyone (including people who disagree with him on everything) believed it.

"For theater owners and studios, the technology could be a lifesaver, luring people back to multiplexes for an experience that cannot be matched by sophisticated home-theater systems or stolen by pirates with hidden camcorders."

You mean they're going to eliminate ringing cell phones, ads before the movie (I paid for the movie, not the ads), and people talking/screaming through the movie? Those are the top 3 reasons I don't go to movies anymore. It's so much easier to wait for the movie to come to video and watch it then. And yes, it's a lot cheaper too, especially considering that it doesn't just cost me $10. It costs me $20 (wife and I) and then if the movie totally blows, I'm out $20 and 2 hours. If we rent a movie that stinks, we can turn it off and we're only out $3.

I may not have a massive theater screen (50" HDTV) or an awesome sound system (we use the built-in speakers), but it beats listening to people talk through a movie or answer their cell phone any day.

What 30th Anniversary?
Time
Aren't the new stamps part of the 30th anniversary celebration? To be honest, even if there were ads on tv, I wouldn't even notice them. I DVR everything I watch these days. If I happen to be fast forwarding through a commercial slow enough and it looks interesting, I'll stop. If the ad is at the beginning of the commercial break or end, then I'll notice it. Otherwise, I don't really see any ads.

I don't get a newspaper or anything else at home either and I don't read TFN that much anymore. So unless they start advertising the 30th on giant billboards, I won't really notice it. That doesn't really bother me though. I still like the original movies, but Star Wars just doesn't have the same weight in my life anymore.

Ah, I see what you mean now.

Who says "Truth, justice, and all that other good stuff"? I can't remember that line.

Edit: I think I remember, is it when the boss of the daily planet says "does he still stand for ..."?
If that's the line thank god they changed it. "Does he still stand for truth, justice and the American way?" Yes, that would have been a disaster. Truth and justice, fine.

A disaster? How so? The United States of America was founded on the ideals of Truth and Justice, so it is the American way. Like I said in my previous post, just because the current administration might be making some people angry (others were angry at the US before he came into office, so that's not his fault), doesn't mean that Truth and Justice aren't still the American way.
