What started off as a personal take on the “Anti-Cheese Edit” of The Phantom Menace has now grown into one of the most radical fan edit trilogies out there. So what what makes this fan edit different than any other fan edit?
Opening crawl:
Episode I
THE PHANTOM MENACE
It is an era of peace under
the Galactic Republic.
Over a thousand years
have passed since the
JEDI ORDER vanquished
the evil Sith Lords.
As the Republic depends
more on the strength of
the Jedi, the TRADE
FEDERATION has been
able to threaten the
Republic and establish
a trade blockade on
the small planet of Naboo.
Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn,
and his padawan
apprentice Obi-Wan
Kenobi, have been sent to
the planet, in hopes of
saving it from the grip of
the Trade Federation…

Different Opening:
NOTE: The clip is outdated and there’s a few things I plan to do differently from what I have shown, but I kept it because it highlights a lot of changes I plan to keep
My opening will be nearly identical to the Anti-Cheese Edit’s, except with a few lines here and there, and timing for some things. This video is now obsolete, but I’m keeping it so I can have something to show

Jar Jar is re-dubbed in English, and is referred to as J.J.
I was originally planning on asking TimStuff to continue his re-dub, but he’s disappeared from the internet and probably has better things to do than message back. I took his lines for his video, and applied the character to the rest of the film. In my opinion, he is a much more humorous character how he is portrayed. I’ll remove any mentioning of the words “Jar Jar”, so that the only time you hear his name is when he introduces himself. EDIT: Originally I had a video here, but it was pretty bad, and when I actually start editing the film again, I’ll either do it myself or find someone else to do it.

Additional footage/diologue
No, not just deleted scenes, but there are quite a few a those. I’m talking footage (or dialogue) from other peoples’ videos. What videos, you ask? First, I got Auralnauts’ “Jedi Party” video (which if you haven’t seen, I highly recommend it; it’s hilarious)- I took two clips from the video, for humorous purposes: Qui-Gon saying “Hello, ladies” and Obi-Wan being told there was a bar on Tatooine. They’re both pretty funny, and add humor to the most un-funny movie in the series. Another clip I added is a very short scene from the fan film DARTH MAUL: Apprentice, taking only the ship flying to the planet, the one Jedi looking around, fighting Darth Maul, and getting sliced. This is the first appearance of Darth Maul in the fan-edit. Both of these are planned, and I intend on getting permission before releasing the edit.
Now here are some things that aren’t exclusive to this edit, but still noteworthy.
-
Palpatine creates an army before the assault on Naboo
I’m basically ripping this from Smithers’ edit, but it’s a really good idea, and the more I applied it to the rest of my edits, the more it improved the plot of AOTC. Scene-by-scene; Amidala tells Palpatine she’s leaving, she leaves (also ripped from Smithers), then Anakin gets rejected by the council, Palpatine creates an Army of the Republic, then the Jedi go to Naboo with Anakin. Yeah I’m totally ripping him off here, but I like his idea, and I’ll find a way to make it more “my own”.
-
No C-3PO nor Darth Sidious
I kept both of them in my original edit (which used an illegal source and wasn’t very different from other edits), but I realized how stupid it is that Darth Vader made C-3PO (this is how I feel about that) and how much Sidious makes the Federation viceroys look like total pussies. As a result of this, you don’t see Darth Maul until the clip from DARTH MAUL: Apprentice, and it makes him much more threatening of a character off the bat.
-
Jar Jar is the only Gungan- no Otoh Gunga, no battle
This was a really satisfying edit, since it was so easy to do and made this movie, by itself, 20% more tolerable. Some of Qui-Gon’s best quotes are in this scene, which is sad, but makes you wonder what Lucas was doing when he put Qui-Gon’s best quotes in a submarine when they’re swimming away from giant fish. I like the idea of J.J. having some beef back home, but the character of Boss Nass is so incredibly stupid that it wasn’t worth it. Also the big battle is taken out, and the Naboo assault now only has three plots instead of four.

OT-style rescoring
This along with other things, will be applied to the whole series of edits. TPM imo had the worst least OT-styled soundtrack of any Star Wars movie, and adding OT feels to the movie, I think, will help with the overall feel of the movie.

Regrading and re-coloring (thanks to kk650)
I hope to use kk650’s The Phantom Menace Regraded as my main source for the edit, if I get his permission, and if I can get my hands on the 16GB version. This includes adding film grain back into the film, and recoloring nearly the entire thing. Very good for keeping the OT-style color palette
EDIT 12/20/2017 (updated 1/2/18): I originally created this edit from an MP4 I torrented (yeah, yeah, I know. I was 16 when I first started on this, okay?), but I’ve since learned my lesson. If I get my hands on kk650’s TPM Regraded 16GB version, I can get started on the edit right away; if not, I will have to rip it from my aunt and uncle’s Blu-Rays if they let me (which they probably will). Who knows?
I will release a re-done script soon once I know my full plan for TPM and AOTC. I got a copy of the public 5GB version of TPM Regraded so I will use that to create previews (YEEEEEE), but I won’t start the actual edit until I get my hands on a higher-quality version (even though this is light years ahead of my LAST source…). Expect various clips soon!
