When it comes to the opening scene, you have the right idea but the audio is rough which makes the cuts seem jarring. I like the scene where the old man says “invasion” but in order to make it a heavier line I would leave a 1-2 second pause before he says it and when he does say it, cut to Queen Amidala and hold the shot there for a few seconds as the music builds. Afterward you will see the army going to toward the city/palace rather than the forest (this shot: http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/0/0b/Trade_Federation_Droid_Army.png/revision/latest?cb=20140622175536) and save the forest sequence for when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan meet Jar Jar.

I can easily do that, since the music is originally on Amidala in the movie

If you aren’t already, I strongly recommend editing with 6.1 channel audio, it will make things move along much more smoothly and moving lines around will be much more seamless.

I’m not sure what that is, but I will definitely look into it!

Thanks! And sure, here are a few although I am not nearly done the entire movie I have a few ready: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/165422/picture:1
I do realize that a few parts of the sand are a few pixels off but once the mask is layered on top of the video you would never be able to tell

It seems odd to me that Qui-Gon would go alone. The Queen has Captain Panaka, and Obi-Wan cold totally go with Q-G

Can someone write a screenplay for the part of the "Darth Maul: Apprentice" fan film?
Time

I plan on incorporating part of the Darth Maul fan film into my TPM edit, and want to make my script completely up-to-date to what’s in the fan-edit. Thing is, I’m not very good at writing descriptions for a screenplay, and there is only 3 lines of dialogue in the 1.5 minutes I want from the film.

Here’s the clip, and I want the script written from 1:25 until 2:40 (Daul Maul looking at the Jedi he just killed). It shouldn’t be that much trouble- I’m just not very good at these things. Thanks!

Thanks for your input! I’m still trying to cut a better version of the scene, the musical timing is all good but you’re right, Obi-Wan needs to show some emotion.

I love the musical rescoring! I definitely agree with Darth GL that Obi-Wan needs a “Nooooo!!”, but I’m sure that extracting it isn’t too hard using something like Audacity, at least to be used underneath a music track. I’m definitely leaning towards using something like this is my edit

If you dub Jar-Jar in english then I think this would be the very first edit to actually do that

Nope! I showed a rough cut of my Jar Jar re-dub to this discussion a couple of weeks ago. If you want to see it, here it is: https://vimeo.com/152045806 (password is wetlands)

-This one would be quite tedious, but in the scene where Windu and other Jedi confront Palpatine, it would be cool to see the other Jedi float into the air and get force choked by Palpatine rather than have them stupidly and awkwardly killed in a lightsaber battle, this would make Palpatine seem way more powerful and make the scene much more intense.

I also like this because it makes mace seem stronger for being immune to it.

A much better idea imo is having Mace face Palpatine alone. I saw Aalenfae do a rough cut of it and it looked really good

I think the idea of Dooku having a green lightsaber is much better than him having a red one. Him having a green lightsaber turns him from a power-hungry ex-Jedi to a Jedi that’s switched sides of the war. I love the idea of the Jedi Order becoming slowly and slowly split apart- and I don’t want to have to watch 4 seasons of The Clone Wars to get there. Could someone haphazardly change the duel scene in AOTC vs Anakin and Obi-Wan? My edit doesn’t include Yoda fighting him

Here is the finished stuff, I’ve put it in a zip with two clips, I’ve included some of the sounds from the trailer. I applied some film grain too and corrected the Empire clip to give it a tad more color.

This looks really good, dude! I don’t know how and where I could use this, but I’m looking forward to the possibility of it once I start editing AOTC and ROTS Okay, looking at it again, I’m not so sure if the film grain would fit really well with the prequels, especially since I can crop it myself on Final Cut Pro, but well done, still

The only way I believe it can work would be to slightly delay the invasion:

  • Jedi arrival, they look at the window, small talk, etc.
  • TC14 reports the ambassadors are Jedi
  • communication from the planet
  • the viceroy decides to invade the planet and he orders at the same time to kill the jedi
  • “captain look out”, dioxis scene, etc.

That way you have the invasion and the assassination attempt happening at the very same time. You’ll still have an opening faster than the original tha way, without the sitting and drinking tea being an issue.

That’s what I was thinking as well

I know a fanedit is first to please the one who has made it, so here is only my opinion: it doesn’t work. I’m not mentioning the jarring sound montage here and there than you can fix in subsequent versions, I really mean the scene ordering you’ve chosen, as well as how you’ve redubbed (and subtitled) the vilains.

You have some good points about the changes. I might make some changes about the ordering of scenes, especially involving the Jedi sitting down. That’s definitely subject to change

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (Cracker of Justice Edit)

What started off as a personal take on the “Anti-Cheese Edit” of The Phantom Menace has now grown into one of the most radical fan edit trilogies out there. So what what makes this fan edit different than any other fan edit?

Opening crawl:

Episode I
THE PHANTOM MENACE

It is an era of peace under
the Galactic Republic.
Over a thousand years
have passed since the
JEDI ORDER vanquished
the evil Sith Lords.

As the Republic depends
more on the strength of
the Jedi, the TRADE
FEDERATION has been
able to threaten the
Republic and establish
a trade blockade on
the small planet of Naboo.

Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn,
and his padawan
apprentice Obi-Wan
Kenobi, have been sent to
the planet, in hopes of
saving it from the grip of
the Trade Federation…

  1. Different Opening:
NOTE: The clip is outdated and there’s a few things I plan to do differently from what I have shown, but I kept it because it highlights a lot of changes I plan to keep
My opening will be nearly identical to the Anti-Cheese Edit’s, except with a few lines here and there, and timing for some things. This video is now obsolete, but I’m keeping it so I can have something to show

  2. Jar Jar is re-dubbed in English, and is referred to as J.J.
I was originally planning on asking TimStuff to continue his re-dub, but he’s disappeared from the internet and probably has better things to do than message back. I took his lines for his video, and applied the character to the rest of the film. In my opinion, he is a much more humorous character how he is portrayed. I’ll remove any mentioning of the words “Jar Jar”, so that the only time you hear his name is when he introduces himself. EDIT: Originally I had a video here, but it was pretty bad, and when I actually start editing the film again, I’ll either do it myself or find someone else to do it.

  3. Additional footage/diologue
No, not just deleted scenes, but there are quite a few a those. I’m talking footage (or dialogue) from other peoples’ videos. What videos, you ask? First, I got Auralnauts’ “Jedi Party” video (which if you haven’t seen, I highly recommend it; it’s hilarious)- I took two clips from the video, for humorous purposes: Qui-Gon saying “Hello, ladies” and Obi-Wan being told there was a bar on Tatooine. They’re both pretty funny, and add humor to the most un-funny movie in the series. Another clip I added is a very short scene from the fan film DARTH MAUL: Apprentice, taking only the ship flying to the planet, the one Jedi looking around, fighting Darth Maul, and getting sliced. This is the first appearance of Darth Maul in the fan-edit. Both of these are planned, and I intend on getting permission before releasing the edit.

Now here are some things that aren’t exclusive to this edit, but still noteworthy.

  1. Palpatine creates an army before the assault on Naboo
I’m basically ripping this from Smithers’ edit, but it’s a really good idea, and the more I applied it to the rest of my edits, the more it improved the plot of AOTC. Scene-by-scene; Amidala tells Palpatine she’s leaving, she leaves (also ripped from Smithers), then Anakin gets rejected by the council, Palpatine creates an Army of the Republic, then the Jedi go to Naboo with Anakin. Yeah I’m totally ripping him off here, but I like his idea, and I’ll find a way to make it more “my own”.

  2. No C-3PO nor Darth Sidious
I kept both of them in my original edit (which used an illegal source and wasn’t very different from other edits), but I realized how stupid it is that Darth Vader made C-3PO (this is how I feel about that) and how much Sidious makes the Federation viceroys look like total pussies. As a result of this, you don’t see Darth Maul until the clip from DARTH MAUL: Apprentice, and it makes him much more threatening of a character off the bat.

  3. Jar Jar is the only Gungan- no Otoh Gunga, no battle
This was a really satisfying edit, since it was so easy to do and made this movie, by itself, 20% more tolerable. Some of Qui-Gon’s best quotes are in this scene, which is sad, but makes you wonder what Lucas was doing when he put Qui-Gon’s best quotes in a submarine when they’re swimming away from giant fish. I like the idea of J.J. having some beef back home, but the character of Boss Nass is so incredibly stupid that it wasn’t worth it. Also the big battle is taken out, and the Naboo assault now only has three plots instead of four.

  4. OT-style rescoring
This along with other things, will be applied to the whole series of edits. TPM imo had the worst least OT-styled soundtrack of any Star Wars movie, and adding OT feels to the movie, I think, will help with the overall feel of the movie.

  5. Regrading and re-coloring (thanks to kk650)
I hope to use kk650’s The Phantom Menace Regraded as my main source for the edit, if I get his permission, and if I can get my hands on the 16GB version. This includes adding film grain back into the film, and recoloring nearly the entire thing. Very good for keeping the OT-style color palette

EDIT 12/20/2017 (updated 1/2/18): I originally created this edit from an MP4 I torrented (yeah, yeah, I know. I was 16 when I first started on this, okay?), but I’ve since learned my lesson. If I get my hands on kk650’s TPM Regraded 16GB version, I can get started on the edit right away; if not, I will have to rip it from my aunt and uncle’s Blu-Rays if they let me (which they probably will). Who knows?

I will release a re-done script soon once I know my full plan for TPM and AOTC. I got a copy of the public 5GB version of TPM Regraded so I will use that to create previews (YEEEEEE), but I won’t start the actual edit until I get my hands on a higher-quality version (even though this is light years ahead of my LAST source…). Expect various clips soon!

Info Wanted: Is there an edit of the Original Trilogy already out?
Time

I watched several interviews in which George Lucas said that his original intention was for the OT to be one movie but 20th Century Fox didn’t let that happen. I was considering making an edit of the OT to fit this, similar to The Phantom Edit. Before I do it, though, and consume countless storage on my laptop, has this already been done?

That looks pretty good! I know it will be really hard/impossible to get it BluRay quality, but what you showed looks good already! I only really needed to get the dirt and stuff out of the way in the first place. If you don’t plan on doing it much farther, could you send the result to me?
