Alright, I sent MoviesRemastered and a couple others this latest version yesterday. This is a lower quality render but in terms of the saber I would say this version is finalized (other than some nitpick fixes with Finn’s part at the very end). All masking issues were in the theatrical release and I think the effect is subtle enough to not be overpowering.

Looking great, one thing I’d say is be wary of the tip of the saber, sometimes the way the crackling happens to be it sort of gives the appearance of boxy top which is less than ideal.

Thanks for the feedback, I showed my brother this IRL and he said the exact same thing during a point in the video.

Well, you giving up so much free time is much appreciated, mate.

I’m still only on my phone but everything looks pretty perfect apart from the blade gets a little too thick and over exposed when Finn gets it. Everything else seems on point.

Yeah I kind of enjoy the masking tbh, it’s oddly calming. I think I can try to work on Finn’s part… maybe trying to lower the glow as much as possible when its that close to the camera

Saturdays are my free day lol so I have had a lot of time to play around with the footage. Here is the Loseless quality version of the Pasaana Caverns. I fixed masking issues and made the saber more subtle. I think I got everything that I saw as an issue, but you can only watch something so many times lol.

Google compresses the file so it’ll look different on my drive than when you download the file (which is almost 6 gigs… which is wild!).

EDIT: Wrong link here is the correct one - https://drive.google.com/file/d/14Oxt08_g6jJbUAF7CWKfRXJnhdwvphDp/view?usp=sharing

Man, I’m really loving this effect. I’m probably projecting a lot more on it than others, but when I see the flickering blade, I feel like the amount of work Rey probably put into trying to put the lightsaber back together feels a lot more tangible. Rey is a scavenger. She might not be able to rebuild things perfectly, but she makes things work. Just that little touch adds to the character of Rey and the lightsaber, in my opinion.

I love this perspective! Also, Rey would probably blame herself for the lightsaber’s destruction and could add weight to her statement when she tells Leia about not feeling worthy to wield it.

After reading everyone’s comments, it appears that Ajan Kloss is in a pretty good spot, I’ll run a final pass on it and make sure there are no underlying issues.

In the time being, here is the first pass for the Pasaana Caverns scene. There are definitely some spots were the overlay is off and some issues that I see, but it is a first pass of course.

Also, Axios, I can definitely try to smooth out the blade some more or try some other stuff and about the blade.

Yes, I can’t see anything wrong with it at all on my screen, at least not without going frame by frame or anything. The first pass seemed like the pattern on the blade was sort of… uniform, but it looks like you’ve fixed that so I have no complaints.

It seems like Kylo’s saber core was a little thinner but had the crackle effect that makes it look thicker. This saber obviously can’t really be made thinner, so you use a little less of a crackle effect. At least it seems that way.

Yeah, I could use a simple wire remover to try and make the core thinner but it can cause some crazy warping of the environment so I found that it looked better to apply a smaller effect to the normal lightsaber, match the color and go frame by frame to match it to movements of the Skywalker saber.

Here is my second pass… I fixed the masking issues, made the blade a bit more subtle, and fixed the log scene. Some issues that got pointed out where actually issues with the theatrical release (i.e. like a lightsaber tip going through a tree) so there wasn’t much that I was able to do about that, but the footage is moving so quick that you won’t notice it when watching the movie at normal speed.

This export is lower quality as I wanted you all to see if there any noticeable issues before do the final render.

So is the idea that Rey modified Luke’s lightsaber to make it crackle? If so why would she do this? Sounds iffy like people have run out of things to edit on this movie.

Nah, I think idea is that after TLJ where it was broken she tried to fix it (essentially with a leather strap might I add) and some component wasn’t repairable or just because Rey theoretically wouldn’t know how to fix it, causing the blade to be distorted.

Basically just a way to reference TLJ and the broken Saber, plus symbolic representation of Rey’s conflict and Kylo’s past when he is redeemed.

At least thats my line of thinking for it.

Alright all, here is Rey’s training scene. The Pasana clip was low quality footage, but I used the actual movie footage for this one. Let me know the issues that y’all see with it and I will continue to refine it.

I hate to be a dissenting voice, but I just don’t think that ‘crackling’ saber edit looks very good. I also don’t think making Rey’s saber have a crackle is a good idea. Just my 2 cents.

No worries! Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and if Hal decides that this isn’t the route he wants to take than I can still leave the scenes up for someone who wants to edit the lossless workprint version.

With the healing of the blade, I plan doing both versions, and letting everyone choose what they think is better… I will also use the footage with Leia’s purple lightsaber as I think that was beautiful work and tribute to Carrie Fisher.

As for the healing itself, I think I would ask what makes the lightsaber crackle. In the Kylo Ren prequel comics his blade crackles because his Kyber crystal broke and causes a distorted beam. If thats what is happening here then I think the best way to show it would be the crackling visually fading away.

But if the lightsaber is crackling because of a mechanical issue due to being torn in half (emitter broken, and roughly put back together by someone who has never repaired a lighstaber) then I would say the crackling needs to stay until the end of the movie.

It really depends on what you want to message to the audience. Filmmakers never what to treat their audience like they are dumb (I believe JJ can be guilty of this at times) but it could be a bit of stretch for the lightsaber to be healed during the handoff to Ben (but I’d have to see it because I think this would be my preference if we went that route like the kyber crystal was healed due to be transferred through the force with their bond)

Edit: personally I kind of like the idea that the lightsaber is permanently damaged due to again being repaired by someone who doesn’t know anything but making or fixing a lightsaber.

Well hey, if you’d like to make that change for the whole movie, I’d implement it! There may be a shot or two that’ll need it from Dominic’s version of the desert fight scene.

Absolutely, work has picked up quite a bit recently but I’ll definitely work on it in my free time and, at the very least, make it available for download for a loseless version

I’m not sure with route you’ve gone doing the fx but if I can help PM me.

Will do, thanks for the offer!

I saw everyone talking about making Rey’s lightsaber have a crackly blade. I’m a hobbyist, so not professional work but definitely a neat concept. Super early draft.

Edit: Also, if anyone is interested I found this picture of a planetary view of Ajan Kloss from BFII, added a letterbox to it… someone could add the Falcon to it or something, maybe when Finn, Poe and Chewie come back after Leia dies? Here is the link if needed.

I think my favorite was “Is the Falcon yours now?”

I’ve seen a lot of people talk about how Rey has claimed the Falcon for herself, but I think we just assume that because she’s a human and the main character. In the actual movies, Chewie is the only character who is on the Falcon every time it flies in the Sequels, and he’s always one of the pilots too (Rey took a gunner seat in TLJ). I’m pretty sure the Falcon belongs to Chewie, and he’s just taken in Rey as his co-pilot since that’s what Han wanted. Rey does call it “Han’s ship” in TROS and not “Chewie’s ship,” but she clearly had a lot of reverence for Han (I wouldn’t be surprised if Chewie called it that too), and at the least that’s proof that she doesn’t think of it as hers.

I don’t know how much relevance this has, but the Smuggler’s Run ride at Galaxy’s Edge has you flying the Falcon on a mission from Hando, who said he was borrowing it from Chewie, not Rey. If you take that into context I would assume that Chewie has ownership.

That was great! Yeah, the “world they know” thing, I was just throwing out ideas to move people away from the Fortnite broadcast by suggesting something a little less (hopefully, imo) ridiculous.

Maybe Palpatine’s line could be:

“The Final Order begins. Send the ships.”

Unless that’s too vague, or his cadence is too unnatural.

I tested that one out and it sounded natural but you may have to cut the scene where all of the Resistance is standing in a circle short as there was a lot of time before Poe says “Somehow Palpatine has returned” and it felt weird with too much silence.

I think if the “Somehow, Palpatine has returned” bit is going to be replaced with the group listening to something, a big fancy broadcast isn’t the way to go. Instead, we should hear Palpatine speaking with Pryde, distorted enough to sound like a secret recording but clear enough to recognize their voices. This places emphasis on the spy subplot and foreshadows both that someone high-ranking is the spy, as well as that Pryde’s loyalty lies with the Emperor and not the Supreme Leader. It also potentially works as a red herring. If we hear Richard Grant speaking in the spy message and then later see him as a new character in the First Order meeting, he and Hux eyeing each other suspiciously from across the table, then an observant audience member will likely come to one of two assumptions: either Hux is the spy (now foreshadowed instead of a random twist), or Pryde is (a red herring, making Hux’s reveal and death a bigger twist).

Edit: if we want to split Palpatine and Pryde’s conversation from later in the movie, and do a bit of sentence-mixing, we could do it like this:

Spy recording on Ajan Kloss:
Palpatine: “Send the ships to a world they know. Let it burn. The Final Order begins.”
Pryde: “Yes, my lord.”

This gives context to Poe’s line, “He calls it the Final Order. In 16 hours, attacks on all free worlds begin.”

Then in the meeting after Leia’s death:
Palpatine: “The princess of Alderaan has disrupted my plan, but her foolish act will be in vain. Come to me on Exegol, General Pryde.”
Pryde: “As I served you in the old wars, I serve you now.”
Palpatine: “She will come. Her friends will follow.”
Pryde: “Yes, my lord.”

This is the same “Yes, my lord” used twice, but it’s far enough apart and appropriate enough for the situation that I bet a casual audience member wouldn’t notice.

I did a super rough mock up of what this could theoretically look like… I don’t think anyone else did this lol, but I just quickly went through the pages. I’m sure Hal would make it sound much better than what I could do, but I think that, done right, it could work well.

its decent, i just have no idea what “send the ships to a world they know” is supposed to mean in that context

Yeah I was just following Neerb’s suggestion… it probably could just be “The Final Order Begins” and the “Yes my lord.” Then Poe can explain what the Final Order is.
