Idea: The Last Jedi WITHOUT Cantobight
Time

I just downloaded and watched poppasketti’s Last Jedi: Rekindled and he has truly outdone himself. This is a marvelous edit and the SPFX changes/additions he made were top notch. This is my go to version of the Last Jedi. With that being said, I was still bothered by the horrible Maz Cameo, Cantobight trip, and lame codebreaker talk/character. This is simply bad writing by Rian and there is no way around that. Or is there…

I’ve been messing around with the Rekindled edit and I think with his added BB-8 to Finn and Rose’s shuttle escape scene, I think it may be possible.

‘The Plan’ - Setting up the new plan of action without Maz and the need for a codebreaker. Quite simple really. The plan fails so it doesn’t have to be well thought out. The theory behind the new plan? Someone (Poe) has learned about Han and Leia’s little maneuver in The Empire Strikes back. Floating away with the rest of the garbage. The rebels are being pursued with ships being destroyed so debris would be constantly passing by ‘The Supremacy’. Finn and Rose would float in space as debris until they are behind ‘The Supremacy’ and then enter from behind. Billie Lourd’s character even says as much. “It’s nothing. Just debris”

Here are the short scenes edited together. “The Plan”

I had a 20 minute video of just Finn and Rose on ‘The Supremacy’ combined with Poe’s takeover and subsequent hyperspace ram, but I need to re-encode that. I can upload that tomorrow. But I really think it works… Thoughts?

Can’t wait to see it!

Well, removing Snoke, I was able to get a combined edit under 3 hours. The Last Jedi down to about 1 hr and 26 minutes and The Force Awakens down to 1 hr and 31 minutes (minus crawl and credits). This is some major cutting going on… Here are the highlights:

TFA:
No Poe on Jakku
No Treasure Map to Luke
No one is after BB-8, only Poe & Rey
No Rathtars
No Snoke

TLJ:
No Paige heroics
No Maz cameo
No code breaker
No Cantobrite
No Snoke

Cut Snoke completely. Have Kylo be ahead of the First Order (and rename them the New Empire or something) from the start. Have the fact that he trained with Luke be the reason he’s actually powerful and cunning enough to resurrect the Empire. I think that would make the First Order feel more natural and would more directly have the trio more involved since they all know they played a role in not just making Kylo what he is, but also for indirectly causing the Empire to rise again.

I like this a LOT. This may be the solution I needed to make combining Ep.7 and Ep.8 actually work. Rey can now go directly from Training with Luke to Crait.

I think an excellent edit would be to cut out the back stories of Finn and Poe, at least initially. Maybe open the movie with Rey and her life on Jakku and then she runs into BB8 and then eventually Fin. This would add some mystery as to the characters and what is going on. We do not need to know that Fin is a stormtrooper and instead we discover that. This would not be a bad thing. Try and keep the focus completely on Rey and make Poe and Finn solid supporting roles.

That’s a great idea! Perhaps footage of Finn’s betrayal could be played as a flashback while he’s in a coma in TLJ?

I started playing around with an edit where we pan down from the scroll to Finn’s Tie Fighter escaping and crashing. No Poe until we meet him for the attack on Starkiller. My biggest complaint about all of the new films is Poe disappearing from the crash, only to show up later with a poorly written (only option) excuse for how he escaped Jakku. So I am trying to fix this.

Also no codebreaker and no trip to Cantobite in TLJ. Just a failed attempt to board the First Order Ship. They were monitored all along and captured upon their arrival.

While just a rumor at this time, episode 9 could possibly be turned into two movies… If, and that is a BIG if, this happens, what influence could this have on editing?

Merge 7 and 8 into one movie. Yes. Do it. Make both movies better by cutting out all the fat and slapping them together or re-edit them into one movie.

R2 has the map the entire time, start the movie on Jakku. Tell the story from Rey’s perspective. Don’t explain Finn’s background or crashing on Jakku. This would FINALLY get rid of my biggest plot complaint. How and the hell does Poe get off Jakku!?!?!

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *
Time

To be honest, I love the idea of two movies. JJ is probably regretting his backing out of 8, and two movies would give him a chance to have his “trilogy”. This would ALSO give our film editors more material to make a definitive 3 movie Trilogy 😃

Merge Episodes 7,8 eliminating the Episode 7 remake of 4, and eliminate the boring stuff in episode 8. They already merge together perfectly when we meet Luke on the island. My 2 cents.

Jrs81, About your silent PT, will there be color tinting?

Haven’t decided yet if I’m going to be color tinting. Here is a sample.

This is my recent edit of the Anakin/Obi-wan Lavafall. ALWAYS hated animated Anakin’s SUPER jump. I flipped a few scenes which may seem jarring for those very familiar with the fight, but I think it works. I let the long shots and lava flow determine which way I flipped the shot.

  • Per MalàStrana’s suggestion on the thread, I used the first part of “Torn Apart” from TFA
  • Per jrs81’s suggestion on the thread, the shot of the door is extended

I think it works well. Let me know your thoughts!

That’s good, but I would linger on the door even longer. Almost uncomfortably long. How long would Luke stand there in silence, before falling to his knees?

<strong>DESTROY ALL JEDI:</strong> <em>The unfinished Tarantino-inspired prequel edit</em>

Honestly, I think Tarantino-esque music is kind of inherent to the idea of the edit. I don’t think it would work without it.

Yeah, and I agree. As I said above, I’m not even sure if it would work. With the editing, the voiceovers, new dialogue, I was simply curious if it could be done and what it would feel like. It doesn’t even necessarily need to be John Williams. Just something orchestral that would fit with the rest of the SAGA. Selections from the Young Indiana Jones Soundtrack would be an interesting choice 😉

Anyhow, just an idea for an alternative track. I am as excited as everyone else for the Tarantino edit!

Snooker, watching the few clips you’ve posted, this is already my favorite Prequel Edit and I can tell it will be my preferred way to watch Episodes I, II, and III.

While I love the modern music as an artful decision and tribute to Tarantino, I was wondering if you had any intention of providing a second audio track, with John Williams music? Not quite sure HOW it would work, but I do miss it. While effective, the modern music is a bit jarring and foreign to Star Wars.

Even if I could enjoy some exclusive John Williams during a nice extended Intermission! I appreciate your efforts and any consideration to my request.

Here is a video I posted years ago which shows what a “silent” film transformation can accomplish. While Obi-Wan is investigating Kamino, young Anakin is stuck with street patrol on the streets of Coruscant. Anakin on street patrol is shown in the clip. In my edit, he is then lectured for his “methods” by the council and later while he and Obi-Wan are in the elevator, they update each other on their adventures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCuUuAQnfhs&feature=youtu.be

Since then, I think I made a few small changes and shortened it a bit, but it will give an idea of what I am hoping to accomplish. I am currently replacing my hard drive and moving, but once I get settled in, I intend to start a new thread and post more clips.

Oh yeah indeed, it’s 5.1. But the clip isn’t complete. It’s part another deleted sequence and part the very beginning of the Luke deleted scene.

Not sure how I did that! Here’s a link to a proper version, and the other post has been fixed:

Love the work you’re doing Hal. This is my first comment on your edit.

I was wondering if you could hang on the door a bit longer? Luke leaving the door and kneeling happens a bit too quickly. Let the music as it moves down a few notes take us to Luke’s position as he kneels down.

Ending II with Anakin turning is a pretty interesting idea. I always wished there was a sequence where we actually saw Anakin, as Darth Vader, killing Jedi. The closest we ever get to that is the security hologram.

I’ve actually been toying with this idea myself. Years ago I started a completely radical silent film, inspired by TMBTM’s silent film version, changing the story, changing dialogue, moving scenes, and so forth. It was the only way I could think of to “fix” the bad acting and bad dialogue. In light of the new films and new edits, My interest in this has returned and I have recently returned to this attempt.

My episode one is ‘Attack of the Clones’ reduced to an hr. My episode II is also an hour and ends with Anakin’s turn.
At the beginning of Episode III, we learn that Palpatine has gone missing, and Anakin has been sent off world. During this time of about 6-8 months (determined by Padme’s pregnancy) Palpatine has been training Anakin in the ways of the Dark Side.

My Episode III begins with Obi-Wan discovering Grevious’s location and Anakin greeting Padme after an extended absence. (lifted from the beginning of ROTS). Anakin has always been creepy in this scene and it is believable that he has now completely turned to the dark side. He proceeds to inform her of all that he has learned and to trust what he is about to do. Order 66 commences, and Anakin proceeds to attack the Jedi Temple.

A rough cut of all three episodes is complete and now I need to create the new story and dialogue cards. Maybe one day it will actually be finished 😃

He also said no more Trailers after the first one was released, and then we got the International Trailer. Besides, who would buy the first Bluray release if it was public knowledge that an extended cut was coming.

At the end of the day, no matter what JJ says, the Mouse is running the show.

This is just a tease. Based on the “released” Deleted scenes, I’m willing to bet there will be a Director’s cut, or extended cut, released in the future.

Previously reported by Slashfilm.com, the first cut included an additional 20 minutes, and this was reported to be in the last month before wide release meaning they are finished:

JJ Abrams‘ first cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was almost two hours and forty minutes in length. Lets be clear, that’s his first cut of the movie, not the assembly edit. The film was chopped down to 2 hours and 16 minutes for the final theatrical release, with a reported 20 minutes of scenes getting axed in the last month of editing alone. A dozen full scenes were left on the cutting room floor, not to mention snippets of scenes, moments of dialogue… etc. A lot of these scenes had near-complete visual effects, and some of the characters and moments removed can be seen in some of the merchandise and books.

Unfortunately, patience isn’t a virture for most Star Wars fans, and I include myself in that category.

From TheDigitalBits.com Review:

The set’s bonus experience also includes six short deleted scenes from the film (including Finn and the Villager – :31, Jakku Message – :47, X-Wings Prepare for Lightspeed – :22, Kylo Searches the Falcon – :50, Snow Speeder Chase – :48, and Finn Will Be Fine – :23). They’re in HD, but they all have a time code window in the upper left corner. A few are largely finished, while others are rough edits that have live action mixed with early previz. Really, these are just brief sequences, scene extensions, and trims. There’s nothing especially significant here, so if you were hoping for cut scenes of substance, you’re going to be disappointed. Unfortunately, there’s apparently one more deleted scene that’s only available by using the Digital Copy code that comes with the set. It’s called Tunnel Standoff, and it involves Maz, Chewie, Finn, and Han’s escape from the tunnels under Maz’s tavern. It’s likely the best of the lot, so the fact that the scene is not on the disc itself is a bit frustrating.

Idea: The Star Wars Prequels: The Rewritten Editions.
Time

Alright.  Rough Cut of Episode 1 Complete, and beginning of Episode 2 has started.

Episode 1 picks up in the middle of the Maul battle, new CGI Yoda gives Obi-wan HIS student, Anakin, and at the Funural, Mace questions if Obi-wan is ready for his own apprentice.

CUT TO EPISODE 2

Begins with Obi-wan and Anakin in front of the council after completing a mission.  Mission was completed, but the Council isn't happy with the WAY it was completed.  Apparently Anakin is a bit of a show off and a little too aggressive.

CUT TO ANAKIN and OBI in ELEVATOR

Rather than investigating an assanination plot, Anakin is taking Obi-wan to reveal that he intends to marry Padme.  After discussion, being the good friend spoken of in the OT, Obi Wan reluctantly supports the decision while still knowing the Council would never approve.

Palpatine knows of Anakins intentions and already has his plan in motion to turn him to the dark side...hence the FIRST assassination attempt while Padme is sleeping.

Anakin and Padme then leave to be married  immediately at Palpatine's suggeston, while Obi-Wan is sent by Yoda and Mace to secretly investigate the clone army ordered by the council.  It is common knowledge that the council ordered the creation of an army, but the Jedi suspect something isn't right.

That is the story I am building from, or at least will attempt to build from....we'll see what develops.

Given the success of TMBTM's silent versions of the Star Wars Prequels, has anyone ever tried to make a silent version of the films with completely new dialogue? I was thinking this could be a terrific opportunity for fan editors everywhere to rewrite the prequels and give the characters far more depth than they originally had.

I am working on exactly this in my spare time.  TMBTM's Dusty version is my favorite edit to date, and I was inspired to do as you suggested.  I have only just begun but I am already convinced this is the way to go.  I just got the Blu-rays and will be doing it in HD and with the updated Yoda graphics from Phantom Menace.  This edit is strictly to satisfy my original view of Star Wars before 'A New Hope'

I always felt the prequels were too modern compared to the original trilogy, and adding the old black and white film look helped to make it feel less modern.  It also helps in erasing the obvious CGI looking moments and making them look more natural.   Gone is the horrible dialogue, and John Williams' score takes center stage.

And where am I starting?  I'm taking a cue from Topher Grace's  edit (feedback anyway)  I'm starting in the middle of the saber battle with Maul, and I am quickly getting into AOTC with a grown up Anakin.  Never liked the Kid, gungans, or the age difference between him and Padme.  Also all 3 movies will be combined in one.

I'm not going to put a timetable on this but would be more than willing to discuss ideas.
