The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *

You know what, After a few re-watches I think I’ve been a bit too harsh. I see what they were going for, a fast-paced Saturday morning serial feel, and for that I think it worked ok. I had my expectations up for something more grand, dramatic and mythical on Tython especially after how it was set up in the Ashoka episode.

About Tython, was it not an ice planet in the deep core in the Dr Aphra comics? Here it’s in the Outer-Rim. Seems to be a contradiction there.

It looked like an ambitious student film shot on a hill somewhere in California. Sorry for the harshness but this was nowhere near what we’ve come to expect from this series.

The story was extremely rushed. One second you’re with Ashoka, the next you’ve already reached the top of the temple and you’re negotiating with Boba Fett, who then suddenly cares about the child? It felt like 3 episodes squeezed into half an episode. Don’t even get me started on the dialogue.

Episode 6 is probably my least favourite out of the entire series. I’m surprised and disappointed at the poor pacing, writing, set production, and over all visual quality of this chapter. I was even more shocked when I saw Robert Rodriguez’s name at the end credits.
I honestly Felt like I was watching a Star Wars Theory fan-film, not good.

Guy’s remember this quote from Bob Iger?

“The priority in the next few years is television with The Mandalorian season 2 coming in October, and then more coming from The Mandalorian thereafter, including the possibility of infusing it with more characters and the possibility of taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”

Everything is proceeding as planned

I definitely got Princess Mononoke vibes as well, and it was a good, evocative location.

Agree with RL in that the show is starting to feel disjointed in its desire to set up so many bigger players.

One issue that I have had with Filoni’s work in the past is that the main characters of his shows almost never feel like they are in danger, even when up against superior forces. I hoped that this problem would have been fixed by live action, but it seems to be getting worse. For example, twice in S2E4 the Empire’s ships had target lock on our protagonists yet they never managed to hit them, and in the latest episode there was not tension whatsoever that Mando and Ahsoka would clean house with this random town. I don’t know why Ahsoka hadn’t already dealt with them, honestly. Her final fight with the Magistrate could have ended in two seconds with her two lightsabers, and Mando’s fight with the enforcer could have ended sooner since he has blasterproof Beskar.

Finally, it was a nice change of pace for S1 to take a slower pace with the plot and fill it out with a bunch of side-quests, but in the middle of S2 I’m getting pretty tired of ‘Mando tries to do _ but problems arise and he ends up doing _ for the episode’. Rinse, repeat half a dozen times. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t so often ‘Mando goes to a planet seeking someone and has to fix a problem for them before they can regurgitate a new destination.’

I don’t mean to be too harsh on this show, since it has a lot going for it. But these issues are endemic across Filoni’s shows, and it’s becoming too much to ignore.

I’d direct most of that criticism down Favreau’s way. He the showrunner and writer.

According to the trades, Headland’s show is set in an unvisited time and place in the galaxy, and will follow a female lead - with a lot of martial arts involved. My bet is that it will follow Ashoka in the unknown regions, with Headland show running and Filoni co-writing and directing.

Overall great episode. It really captured the samurai mystic feel of the Jedi from the OT and I thought Ashoka was portrayed very faithfully by Dawson.
I’m happy the episode ended with Mando and Ashoka going their own ways. I had feared her story would take the spotlight away from Mando. But it seems like her journey will branch off into another show, perhaps the one Leslye Headland is in charge of.

However.

I thought it was a misstep to reveal Ashoka right out of the gate. For me, it kinda killed the dramatic build up that was set up in the previous episodes. The story would have been more interesting had we started off with Mando landing on Corvis, with us being introduced to Ashoka along with Mando.

But it’s nothing that can’t be changed in a fan-edit 😉

Jedit: since Ezra is presumably in the unknown regions at this point, I think it’s more likely that Luke will be the Jedi that shows up on Tython, perhaps setting up his own spin off show…

Here’s my speculation on what shows/movies The Mandalorian could be setting up.

-Boba Fett
-Rebels live action (Ashoka-Rex-Ezra-Thrawn)
-The MANDALORIAN JEDI War / KOTOR
-Luke’s Jedi academy

The Mandalorian, while following its own story, will have episodes that affectively work as backdoor pilots for these shows / movies.

Interesting that the concepts show Coruscant somewhat further away, in my head I had been picturing it in close orbit like this:

Looks great, I did something similar for Jonh a while ago, would be awesome to see something along these lines for the meeting
