I guess I disagree that they “should have” made an appearance at all. That would have been pure fan service. If there was a place in the story for either of them, then sure. But there wasn’t, so trying to force an appearance where it isn’t organic is just going to be…well, forced, and unnecessary. That would have been true if Johnson had decided to toss Obi-Wan in there just because he felt obligated (see: Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek: Into Darkness) and it will be doubly true for any fan edit trying to jam him in there just because the editor thinks he needs to go somewhere.

Yes I agree that they shouldn’t be shoehorned into the story without purpose but for this case I don’t think it would feel forced, it’s all down to execution, and it would fit in well in the the context of letting go of the physical world, completing his mission and becoming one with the force. Obi wan would give him that extra push.

Any chance of adding a faint “let go” from obi-wan as Luke becomes one with the force?

Seems unnecessary, and like it might distract from the emotional core of the scene.

On the contrary, I think it would give a lot more closure to the scene, it would better illustrate that he leaves the physical plain out of choice and not because of his weakness, having obi-wan be part of his final moments would feel quite wholesome as well as it being a nice call back to ANH.

Proposed background (this doesn’t all have to be portrayed or spoken of in an edit):

The Emperor senses the power of young Rey and has Snoke order her killing.

Snoke sends Kylo, age 16 to find Rey.

The Emperor also dispatches his own agent, Ochi to find Rey.

Rey’s parents sell her for drinking money before Ochi ever finds her.

As Rey’s parents depart in the ship, Rey in a fit of rage forces the ship down and it crashes, killing them.

Kylo arrives to find Rey bringing down the ship, she goes unconscious. He feels a connection with her.

Kylo lets Rey live, buries the parents bodies to hide the evidence, and lets Rey go.

I dig it, explains Kylo’s reaction in TFA “What girl!”

You can never get rid of your darkside, you can reject it, fight it, but never get rid of it. Its a constant battle and that’s the point. Taking the path of the light is vowing to fight this battle.

To be fair Yoda conquered his dark side in The Clone Wars and yet he never struggled with it ever again

Pressuring Luke to kill his father isn’t very lightside ; )

(Edited)
Lego sw the skywalker saga, lego sw TFA, the battlefront games and toys might have some usable audio for Kylo. I think having Jakku instead of Passana in the third act of the ST would make Rey’s arch go full circle, intercut the flash-back of her electrocuting Ochi’s ship with her blowing up Chewies transport, having Ochie’s ship from the flash back right beside her as she discovers her past all while its on Jakku is a narrative opportunity that should be looked into.

Exactly, the trauma would result in her blocking her memories and subsequently her ability to use the force, hence The Force Awakens. Concerning Ochi and the ship, what if Rey’s parents paid for transport on Ochi’s ship with the money they got from selling Rey, we can turn Passana into Jakkund just assume that the ship ended up getting repaired after it got electrocuted.

I think it would put Rey on an even footing with kylo on an emotion level, in the hanger scene you can have Kylo tell Rey “we are heirs of the darkside and we will take it’s throne” really lean in on the similarities between them -the “dyad”. this would make the ending far more impactfull (especially if we make ben live) as we have them both reject their innate darkness and begin a new future with the light- it rhymes.

Except it can’t be Ochi’s ship because it’s on Pasaana…

Not necessarily, the ship could have been repaired and used again by ochi until it found its final resting place on Passana. Turning Passana into Jakku would be the cleaner option, thematically it would tie Rey’s arch pretty well with her discovering who she is on her home planet.
Wonder if some downed Destroyers can be inserted in the background to really sell the idea.

Rey’s natural inclination towards the darkside and its Ramifications on her character and the plot need to be adressed. I always thought it would be interesting if we found out that she killed her parents the same way she “killed” chewie, maybe she was born with the darkside and her parents hated her for it, they decide to sell her to unkarr and leave the planet but in her rage she force electrocutes the ship, when she becomes so traumatised that she locks those memories away, in TROS we see her true nature unravel as the film progresses until we reach the climax where she must make the ultimate choice.

That’s a good idea too. Rey killed her parents. We see Rey’s visions of her friends dying. First Kylo tells her he buried her parents bodies on Jakku. She interprets this as he murdered them. He later reveals she’s the one who killed her parents. We then see Rey’s future visions again of her friends dying but this time see her as a Sith. In other words she will be responsible for their deaths.

Maybe the action of killing Chewie triggers a vision of her doing the same thing to her parents.
