Since Hal wants to maintain the majority of the reactions to after the message cuts off, I think the solution would be to include the scene from later where they decode the message but instead of the sith language being played you have “the work of generations is complete” cutting “the great error is corrected” and going straight to "the day of victory is at hand, the day of the sith.

I think the most important thing, in this case, is to convey the most with the least amount of words possible.

So… do people prefer Palpatine’s message here to what’s in the workprint? We get one additional line, but lose the impact of the concluding static immediately preceding the crowd gasping and clamoring. Personally, I prefer what’s currently in the workprint. https://vimeo.com/449495094

I think that if you are to overlay a Palpatine line over the characters reaction than you might as well include more of the message like in IIFaneditor’s version: https://vimeo.com/399876146
(which I’m totally a fan of!)

Yes, because it was from the film prior and is tied to that moment, whereas Burning Homestead is a callback to an analogous moment which itself is no longer anchored to a specific moment. Not saying it’s logical anyway.

Here, compare this to what’s in the workprint for the message moment: https://vimeo.com/449495094

Certainly an Improvement!
If you want you could try replacing “The great error is corrected” by “the work of generations is complete”, just because that line gives the most context. If you wanted to have both, You could move Chewie and Finn’s reaction shots up alongside Rey and Leia’s reaction.

Re-watching the message I don’t think the average viewer would get the impact of what was happening or who was saying it right away just from the two lines “day of revenge, day of the Sith”. I think it would be more obvious that it’s Palpatine and more impactful for the audiance and the trilogy as a hole if the first part “the work of generations is complete” and “the great error is corrected” were included. Only thing you’d have to do is play the extra lines over Rey and Leia’s reaction, which I think works better because that way the audience’s reaction bounces off the characters’ reactions to hearing his voice.

That feels super Palpatiney. Should that maybe get used for some Snoke scenes? Did Snoke have his own theme already?

I think it should be used for his scenes in TFA and TLJ along with Palpatine’s scenes in TROS.

Snoke’s theme in TFA was basically a new rendition of “Palpatine’s teachings” from Episode 3 (which is quite interesting)

I think it would be better if the reveal was split in two, the first part, during their battle in his chamber and then the second in the hanger. That way you have more screen time to better pace out the dialogue with footage.

  • Kylo’s chamber -
    *Rey holds the dagger
    Kylo:“Rey, you’re hard to find”
Rey: “You’re hard to get rid of”
Kylo: I pushed you in the desert because I needed to see it, I needed you to see it, who you are, what you did. (this can be taken from Poe’s interrogation in TFA).
    Rey get’s angry: “You’re lying”
Kylo: “I never lied to you. They sold you, because they feared you”
    Rey: “don’t!”
Kylo: “You remember more than you say, I’ve been in your head”
    Rey: “I don’t want this!”
    Kylo: “Search your memories”
    Rey: “No!”
Kylo:" remember them, see them! "
-After Rey blew up Chewie’s ship she sees a vision of her parent’s ship exploding. Now her entire memory is  restored, after years of blocking it out, she sees her young self elecetricuting her parents ship, with pure rage until it explodes.
Cut all exposition about Palpatine taking her parents, cut straight to them braking Vader’s stand.
-Close up of Kylo and Rey clashing blades.
Kylo: “It was you that destroyed the ship, You killed your parents Rey, you are no better than me.”
    Rey: “No…”

Next time they meet on the hanger he can tell her about Palpatine grooming them and that they are a dyad etc etc.

That’s how I would have gone about it ^

I agree with Rogue on the dubbing. The tone and emotion of the voice is just not what is needed in that situation. Maybe someone here has a good Driver impression, with some good voice modulation I think we can work the dialogue pretty smoothly into a Rey-nobody edit.

I suggested the idea of Rey killing her parents to FDS in one of their vids and by the looks of it, they liked the idea and ran with it.
Recently they released a few videos showing their work on the Reveal.

I think it’s a good start on the idea but the sound needs to be worked on a little, it’s missing that umph from Kylo’s original voice.

I recommended that the reveal be split into two parts, the first during the duel in Kylo’s chamber and the second in the hanger. That way there’s more screen time to play with.

Right off the bat I think we need to give The first Order its own unique theme. There was an unused track for Hux’s speech that would be perfect as a recurring theme in the trilogy. https://youtu.be/R_gSngCB_iM
Not a fan of how they didn’t distinguish Kylo’s theme from the First Order.

Secondly, The Snoke and Palpatine connection should be made more apparent musically just as it should be made more apparent narratively. For this I’d recommend Anthem of Evil and Palpatine’s teachings (Plagues’s theme) from ROTS to be played as their main theme.

Part of me wishes some of the deleted scenes were cleaned up and worked into the movies. I know the movie would have to be recut due to pacing, but some of the scenes were cool. Like Luke making his green saber.

I second this.

Seeing how well done your prequel edits are, have you considered doing your own OT revisited edits?

Na, Ady is doing more than i could do. Han in Carbonite, Hoth hangar models, Dagobah model, etc. He’s filmed people on set for shots on Hoth or Bwing fighters. 3d printing models to spec or gear like helmets. Just to name a few. He still inspires me in many ways and would love to see him take on the prequels to see what he would do.

How about the ST?

For the saber toss, I remember there was a much more dramatic take of that from the documentary. It seamed to really fit with the TFA ending. The issue was the string holding the saber being visible, and that Luke’s hand was pre-CG.

I think a combination of the the footage here, the original, and the early teaser, would make for a more serious and dramatic version of the scene.

Man last I check there were 12 pages… I have a lot to catch up on lol

I feel you lol

btw did you guys figure out the Vader castle scene? (To the Op and thread)

It seems no one’s tackled it yet.

Once I did a very rough concept of where the castle would be placed, but that would be it.

That looks great. I don’t think the issue lies in the place in which it’s positioned, rather I think it’s the size and perhaps the model itself that seems a little off.

I think the castle should look more distant, towering down from above.
Kinda like in this picture:

I think this image here could be made smaller to fit into the background of the shot.
