The Starlight Project Addendum: The Rise of Skywalker (Freeform Brainstorming Session)
Time

It’s just sort of vague how she is a more “perfect” creation than the Skywalkers. If anything, Anakin was more powerful and more susceptible to the dark side than Rey. I think Kylo can recognize where his family came from while actively choosing the dark. He doesn’t want to be like Vader, he’s actively looking to destroy the sith and start something new. He’s trying to be better. The imagery of Rey and Kylo destroying Vader’s mask supports this. Perhaps you could hint at this earlier in kylos visions. I’ve seen people talk about the fan film where Kylo kills Vader, and while I wouldn’t want to use the whole thing, maybe a few shots from that could reinforce this point.

I agree that Kylo wouldn’t admit that about Vader, so maybe change that line back. But, I think the idea that Kylo comes from the light and chooses the dark and Rey comes from the dark and chooses light one of the most interesting parts about them, and what makes the dyad so strong. Besides, it’s not about where they come from, but the decisions they make for themselves. That’s the point of Rey’s story, after all. And if they both have the same origin, what makes Rey’s journey different?

“Rey…wherever you are…You are hard to find."

“You are hard to get rid of.”

“I pushed you in the desert because I needed to see it…I needed you to see it…who you are. The dark side is in your nature, Rey…”

“You’re lying.”

“You were right…your parents were no one. Junk traders expecting a child they didn’t ask for.”

“Don’t!”

“But your father had no part in your conception…”

“I don’t want this!”

“… just like my grandfather.”

“No!”

“Palpatine chose you.”

(Rey sees the vision of her on the sith throne.)

“I’ve seen it just as you have.”

“Stop talking.”

“Rey…I the know the rest of your story.”

(Cutaway to heroes capture)

“Palpatine tried to find you when you were young. He sent his hunters after you. He knew the power you possessed… The darkness."

“So that’s where you are.”

“You know why Palpatine was searching for you. I’ll come tell you.”

“Why did the Emperor come for me? Tell me.”

"Because he manipulated the dark side of the force itself to create life. You’re his creation, his chosen heir. You… are a Palpatine.”

"My family was created by the light. And you, the dark. What Palpatine doesn’t know is that we’re a dyad in the Force, Rey… two, that are one. We can end the Sith, and bring a new order to the galaxy, together…”

“You know what you need to do. You know.”

“I do.”

Slightly altered some of RL’s ideas. The light created the Skywalker’s, but Palatine used the dark to create Rey. His experiment worked, but he didn’t know where Rey ended up, so he focused on Ben in hopes that Rey would reveal herself. Parents are removed. Ochi could have still been looking for Rey, but never killed her parents. Once she was born, they sold her and left Jakku. Would only take a slight vfx edit in TFA to change the ship in the flashback. Also requires removal of the “dead in a paupers grave” line in TLJ, but makes sense with those changes.

The one question would be if Palpatine picked out Rey’s parents in particular, or Palpatine performed some ritual or whatever but didn’t know where his experiment ended up. I’m leaning towards the former, since Jakku kind of is a great environment to raise a survivor.

I think the latter would work well too. Then you could say that ochi was sent to get Rey, but never found her, only removing the dagger connection. It also explains why palpatine goes for Ben and leaves Rey alone on Jakku: he just doesn’t know where she is.

I think I agree that Rey’s parents shouldn’t be good, and I think there’s plenty of better reasons why she’d hate Palpatine. It’s a blatant contradiction to what was said in the last film, and since these 2 sides are both coming from Kylo, it takes away from what he’s saying now. Besides, Rey doesn’t even seem to remember her parents at all throughout the trilogy, and we spent two movies dwelling on them. I think that removing them from this one is worth it to push her character along.

That being said, I love the force creation angle. Personally, I would say that Rey was a creation of Palpatine, while the Skywalker’s are a creation of the force. That makes the premise of the dyad stronger as Rey and Kylo are inverses, and adds more weight to Rey taking the skywalker name at the end.

AOTC is amazing, I feel like everything really works now for the most part. Here’s a couple things I would change:

  • I would add back the nightmare scene, Anakin’s mother is only mentioned once before this so it feels like it comes out of nowhere for him to want to leave so bad. I think it would work better if we saw him having the nightmare at least.

  • I kind of missed Yoda at the end of the film, it felt slightly short. I like having him use the force to protect Ani and Obi and not taking out his saber (although I don’t hate the Yoda fight)

  • I would maybe swap the diner scene with some of the Jango asteroid chase, but it worked totally fine the way you have it.

Overall, great job! The added material really changes the film.

I like the prophecy angle for Rey Nobody, I just think you’d have to really get the point across that she could become evil like Anakin, as telling someone that they’re destined to destroy the sith doesn’t really connect to Rey’s inner darkness immediately. I think that could play great off of Rey’s fear of not being able to live up to the legend of the Skywalkers, though. I also really like the originality of the dyad concept, focusing just on that and maybe connecting the dyad to an ancient sith prophecy involving the rule of two would be an interesting inversion of Anakin’s arc, and could explain that Rey’s link to Kylo’s mind allowed her to intrinsically use his knowledge of the force in previous movies.

I like the idea of removing a twist altogether. I think she’s more compelling without it, and the reverse twist in TLJ works as her big character twist in the trilogy. I think the dialogue between Rey and Kylo should emphasize Rey’s feelings of unworthiness towards the Skywalkers and the Jedi, as it feels like her overcoming this is the most fleshed out part of her arc. Kylo feels he can never be accepted back to the light after killing Han, and Rey feels like she’s too flawed to carry on the monumental legacy of the Jedi. Maybe Kylo could mention the crackling saber in this scene.

Yeah, I think making a clean Rey nobody version as a base is a good idea first. Then we can use it to make some more radical ideas. The Rey nobody version of ascendant is honestly pretty good on its own so I’m not sure what else needs to be done to get this clean version. Is there anything not present in that version that we would like to add without adding any more complex storylines?

That would be cool if it could be communicated. The whole chosen one prophecy wasn’t really explored in the prequels so expanding on that in this movie as a replacement for the Rey Palatine arc would be a great way to tie into the prequels and make this feel like a true finale. There are some questions I think most people would want answered: is this tied to a prophecy like Anakin? Who made it, and how does kylo know about it? Recontexualizing it to fit Rey’s arc would be awesome.

I like that idea. I feel like part of Rey’s character in TROS is trying to live up to the legacy that’s been passed down to her, and eventually accepting her role as a Jedi and a Skywalker in the end. Making her the literal chosen one that will decide the fate of the Galaxy definitely puts the pressure on her to not give in to the dark. I think the only thing that’s missing is an external reason for her to be drawn towards the dark that the audience would actually maybe buy. We all know she’s not gonna take the throne just because palpy asks her to. The visions kind of work for this, but I wonder if there’s some better solution.

I think I can hear it slightly, it’s not that noticeable but right before Anakin says that line it sounds like a transition that needs to be faded a little more. Also, this may just be my display, but I noticed a sort of fuzzyness on the video, like the grain is too big? Here’s a pic from that scene, you can kind of see it in Mace’s saber. Idk, I just kept noticing it while I was skimming through.

“Because he’s afraid of your power. The force chose you, Rey, the same way it chose my grandfather. Now only you can decide the fate of the Galaxy.”

“What Palpatine doesn’t know is that we’re a dyad in the force. Two that are one. We’ll kill him, and take the fleet. Together.”

This explains that Palpatine wants her dead because he doesn’t want to mess with another chosen one since he got killed by one before.

This also makes Anakin’s line at the end about bringing back balance much cooler.

That’s really cool, it feels much more like an expansion on what Kylo says in TLJ than the theatrical version. Like Shmi, Rey’s parents aren’t important, but she doesn’t need them to be important to this story. I also love the idea of there being multiple chosen ones throughout history, and Rey is just another in a long line of them.

If it’s stated that Rey was chosen by the force to bring balance, I feel like there’s less risk of her turning to the dark, so maybe drawing some connections with Anakin being the “chosen one” and still turning would be interesting. Also, does Rey have a dad if she’s chosen by the force? Do all chosen ones have no father like Anakin? Rey seems to insinuate that she had a father, but she could just be assuming that. Probably not super important but worth thinking about.
