ROTS: A particular movie...
Time
Well, as long as we're not killing this thread yet...

I am aware of the following:

1) Workprint (before and after aspect ratio correction) WITH numbers.

2) Workprint (correct AR) with numbers blurred out (skillfully but obviously can't remove the area entirely)

3) Telecine (slight sync problems towards middle of film) with Russian title and crawl.

At least that's what I've been told is floating around out there. I'm sure there are others. Aarrrrrrrr- damn pirates!

And that's EXACTLY why it might be released some day... after all- how many versions of 'American Pie' or 'Fast and Furious' etc are there?

Now that they don't have to worry about fighting for SW films distribution rights don't put it past them... seriously!

Not only saw it when I was 7 when it originally aired but have watched it again recently. Extremely painful on each occasion I see it. And I'm all about embarassing GL with it!

For those who like homework (and don't we all!) you should spend a few years reading through http://www.copyright.gov/. Its a tangled, tangled web of legality... and very very interesting. You can also look up all copyrights that are on record currently with the gov.

And as a point of curiosity, if anyone wishes to petition for the distribution of the glorious SW Holiday Special... Lucas and LFL apparently DO NOT hold the copyright for it:

Looks like Fox owns it lock, stock and barrel... now that they have no more SW films to distribute for Lucas, perhaps they'll be persuaded to release it!

I used to know the specifics, but it's been awhile.

The was a ploy by BBV to make the studios release DVDs to them BEFORE the general public release date but that got blasted down as the studios didn't want to lose the direct consumer market. A nice slap in the face of BBV, IMHO!

Did you forget the part about the library "buying" the book? How many libraries do you know of that make thousands of copies of the book available for people to take home and keep?

There are quite a number of differences.

Yeah!! Why if the library charged people for checking out books and videos and didn't pay additional royalties to the copyright holders they would be CRIMINALS... well, or BLOCKBUSTER... or HOLLYWOOD VIDEO... or.... wait... maybe THAT'S why I refuse to rent movies!

( the model is this at rental chains folks: The studios cut Blockbuster a big-ass deal because they will buy a DVD release in volume. Your $15 msrp DVD costs Blockbuster maybe $2. The studios get a huge chunk of change in advance and are happy and don't give a rat's ass about the copyrights from there on out. Blockbuster turns around and after overhead probably makes $2 profit on each DVD rental... and they rent them over and over and over and over. The studio made $2 (time 10,000 or whatever) but BBV mighgt turn around and make $200 profit off of that DVD over its shelf life. Then they turn around and sell it 'pre-viewed' to someone for $6-10. And why don't the studios want a cut of each rental? Hmmmm...??? Perhaps because they already made one guaranteed sale of a product in its 'final' format as far as they're concerned. It used to be different when a mom-and-pop video rental store had to pay $100-120 each for a single VHS tape. The studios could still make an ass-load off a single tape sale and the little store had to rent and rent and rent just to break even... and hope someone didn't physically steal their tape. Grrrr.... )

I think if either Shaak Ti scene goes on the dvd, it will be the OLD one, with Grievous killing her.
I've seen stills of him impaling her (though it was written to be a decapitation) with completed effects and Matt Wood has said that he's going in to record new Grievous dialogue for the dvd.
If they were to use the Anakin killing Shaak Ti scene, I would bet it would just be reincorporated into the film. It's too short and quick to be a deleted scene.

I'd love a link to that image, as I write for a DVD website and we have an ongoing feature that shows the script that is missing when it has been confirmed to have been shot. Thus, that image would confirm it.

Thanks to Asha for the link to this:

Yes, I'm teasing the issue to build up interest, but I really did handle this problem. Because Gaffer Tape hit the nail on the head. Vader already knows. And Lucas clearly hasn't watched ESB and studied it in a long time. I'm sure he just thought it would be cool to add this bit of dialogue without thinking about continuity. Why the F doesn't anybody at Lucasfilm ever point this stuff out to him?!?!?!?!?!?

They do! Here is a rare photo of the LAST LFL employee who DARED to say anything contrary to George Lucas:

What do you mean Han wouldn't have a chance against Vader?!?!?! I can see it all now...

(wavy dream sequence transition here)

Vader cuts down Obi-Wan.

LUKE: Noooooooo!!!

HAN: Get aboard the Falcon, kid... I'll handle this.

Han runs across landing bay shooting Stormtroopers left and right as he goes. Vader looks towards Han as blast doors begin to close. Han shoots controls of blast doors, causing them to re-open. By this time he has shot all the Stormtroopers in the hangar. Han holsters his blaster and faces Vader.

VADER: I do not know you. But prepare to die, insolent pup.

Han glances at a leather bantha-whip attached to his belt and stands at the ready. Vader begins to acrobatically twirl his lightsaber all around him. Han shoots a quick look towards Luke, then quickly grabs his blaster and fires one shot which cleanly hits Vader in the chestplate which explodes. Vader collapses next to the empty robes of Ben Kenobi. Han pauses, almost as if to grin, then turns and strides towards the Falcon.

LUKE: ....

HAN: C'mon kid. Let's just hope the old man got the tractor beam out of comission or else I'll have to go back and do it myself...

(more wavy end-of-dream transition)

As for Lando, he had already decided to rebel once Vader gave his, "Pray I don't alter it any further" line. Notice how he looks at Lobot right then? The way I interpreted it was that he then sent Lobot to wherever it was that he was when Lando communicated with him via watch. He had been sent ahead to get those guard ready to overtake the storm troopers. So it was Lando finally getting fed up with being used that caused him to put his plan into motion. I'll say that it wasn't Luke's presence that caused Vader to be distracted but that he was supposed to come. I think even if Luke had been later in coming (it's simple movie convenience that Luke showed up just late enough for Han to be lost but just in time to see Leia and later be saved by her), Vader still would have waited for him. Even if Luke had never showed up at all, Vader would still be waiting for him. He had no way of knowing for sure (until he was told or was able to sense him) if Luke would show up or not. Just like Yoda couldn't see into the future completely accurately, I don't think Vader could either.

Most simply, I think this is just a good example of somewhat (dare I say it?) *complex* characterization on the part of the writer(S) and director: Luke is making his own choices. He chooses to leave Yoday despite advice to the contrary. He wants to be in control of his destiny in the only impulsive way he knows how. He is human. He is young. He is following his heart and makes mistakes. Could it potentially have screwed up the situation? Of course. But he felt he had to take the chance.

Same with Lando. I think Lando's role is one of the better introductions in the series. At first you're not sure of him, then he seems OK enough, then all turns to crap. And faced with similar circumstances I think 90% of people would act as he did. He doesn't want trouble, the Empire got there first and made false promises. He's trying to protect his life and the lives of the people he's in charge of. After Han and party arrive, it starts to become personal for Lando and his deal starts to sour. Again, this part is HIS story and has nothing to do with Luke other than having been told its all a set-up for someone named 'Skywalker' who Lando could give a rat's ass about. But once he sees Han- his friend- in mortal danger then Lando steps up and tries to redeem himself. He finally saw what was going to happen and chose to fight/flee/rebel on his own. And yes, that glance at Lobot shows he had already changed his mind but it was too late to do anything for Han. And I imagine he really felt like crap over that one- after all he's the first one to infiltrate Jabba's palace to help save him.

Luke and Lando: two different people with human emotions and actions whose stories happen to intersect and overlap. That's good filmmaking. It doesn't *have* to just be about one character or another.
