This is probably what bothers me the most about Lucas' stance on the Special Editions.

See why I act emo around here. GL is getting away with murder here, and everyone could care less. Screw petitions, we need to make an indictment against him, or at least a punch in the face.

SW on blu will sell like mad. It doesn't matter what version, because the general public will not care. "It's new, HQ, HD, and looks great! What's your problem?"

I used to have respect for the people of the New Hollywood. Then they got lobotomized and emasculated or burned out or destroyed.

I can understand people not wanting to bash GL for the fact that he did make these wonderful films. That was my mentality until the butchering of THX and the 3D plan.

That people have stopped caring is a sad sign that Lucas is not only winning, but that he is making his victory lap in destroying film history. 50 years from now people will think dated 90s CGI was actually from the late 70s.

Plus, with the implosion of the New Hollywood movement, American film began its slow inevitable decline into Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and Avatar. It will only be a matter of time when Transformers 5 wins the Oscar for best picture. It's gone to the point where Hollywood filmmaking is on the same level with Uwe Boll or the Friedberg/Seltzer duo, and is dead as a doornail, even though they rake in billions through high ticket prices and manipulating people to see their shlock.

People who decry SW for ruining Hollywood are laughing all the way to the bank now...

That's why if you really think about it, there is no real of hope of seeing the OT in good quality. Even if fans make their own reconstruction, they cannot get any better than early 90s quality in video standards. And don't say we'll magically find some print of the original three movies that escaped the clutches of LFL, in the same vein as Metropolis. It's just a shame that Lucas has become an illogical business man high in his tower. Otherwise none of this nightmare would be happening.

But the problem is he destroyed both franchises over the last 15 years, and has refused to release the OT in any presentable quality. I wouldn't bash him if he respected the theatrical versions of the OT and not consider them rough drafts we had the misfortune of loving. And the last we ever saw of the OOT was the GOUT, which he didn't even bother to put any effort into because it would break the dogmatic monolith of the PT/SE. In the end, I am angry with him because he has willed the destruction of film history and I will never forgive him for that.

On a side note, If the OT cannot be preserved, than no film should be preserved. We should destroy every reel of film if it means those three films should rot because of the creator's insanity and abuse of copyright laws.

You seem to live in a fantasy land where you seem to be under the impression that we should all just shut up because we are all wrong and that just because you think that we'll get a fixed version of the OT that it will magically happen. What medication are you on or do you have magical powers that turn your thoughts into reality? Maybe you should change your name from Kenkraly to Dumbledore

I couldn't have said it any better.

That's what pisses me off. They are two OT's, and no one knows what version you are talking about, because most people now can't tell the difference between the original and SE of each SW film, due to the relative nonexistence of the original version.

There has never been a set of films that has been treated this horribly than the OT, and there will never a film that will be fucked around for decades to come.

let's not forget GL's obsessive-compulsive desire to constantly rework the OT years after they are made. There would be no problems with the SW franchise If Lucas had the philosophy of art never being finished, but abandoned, because he would have respected the theatrical cuts of the OT. BUt we are at the mercy of a madman, his computers, and his legal team.

We have evidence that says they're not making a new master. We have word-of-mouth that they are making a new master. One of these is wrong. Do we trust Lucasfilm's official statements, or some poster's dad? Heck, even the word-of-mouth is about the 3D versions, not the BR at all. All official sources say "2004 transfer for BR". They even said "2004 transfer for 3D".

I will be pleasantly surprised if the 3D version of the OT (if enough people go see the PT so Lucas can "afford" to do the OT) doesn't have terrible colors. I'm not holding my breath though. The near-future BRs will be the already existing 2004 transfers; they have 1080p copies, why would anyone think they wouldn't use them (they used a 1993 transfer of the OOT in 2006 for goodness' sake)?

Well, they're cheap. LFL will make a lazy product because they stopped caring about quality and care only about profits.

It's besides the point. LFL is always going to half-ass the BD and 3d releases of SW, like everything since 2004, while fans of the OOT are going to be still watching the GOUT 10 years from now. And the GOUT was just a ploy to undercut bootlegging.

The ironic thing: they're going to think the BD/3d upgrades are better than they really are, just like the 04 DVDs.

Chuck Klosterman on SW
Time

I once read something by Chuck Klosterman on ESB and what it means to GenXers and how Reality Bites is in a sense a sequel to ESB. But anyways he thinks SW is overrated because of what it did to cinema and he thinks its actually bad, much like any other SW detractor. ROTJ he believes is unwatchable. And the prequels he says is just like OT was in pandering to kids (he compares Jar Jar Binks as no different than R2D2). Anyways, has anyone read his article on ESB, and what does everyone think about detractors of the OT?

Wow.  I wasn't aware that that many prostitutes had discerning opinions about Star Wars.

Well as generalfrevious (he's a big fan of the SWSWInsider) has pointed out, the entire SW fanbase has been on their backs taking it from 'the creator', who has done nothing, making us all complicit in the worst atrocity since the holocaust.  You obviously haven't been keeping up with the SWSWInsider. (Street Walker's Star Wars Insider)

First, it's the employees of LFL that are taking it from GL. Second, I believe it is a massive atrocity to have the OOT destroyed, because they transcend the medium of film. Third, I never said members of this site were complicit in the OOT destruction, I explicitly meant Sansweet himself, not any other fan of SW.

Sansweet was complicit in the drowning of the OOT.

 Complicit?

I know he was a paid schill and mouthpiece for Lucas, but 'complicit?'

It's not as if ANYTHING HE COULD HAVE DONE would have changed the outcome. At most he could have stood up and lost his job over it, but at no point did he have any real say.

The philosopher Burke once said that doing nothing was the greatest crime. Hence, Sansweet was complicit in suppressing the OOT when he could have stood up to Lucas, and tell him that what he was doing was wrong. If he was purged from LFL for standing up against him, he could have protested Lucas's despicable actions through the media. But he sat on his ass and said nothing.

If it is released at all. Lucas could have made the GOUT the last time the OOT would be released, then we'd be up shit creek.

The problem is the website has failed: what we have got since the site was launched seven years ago is the GOUT. And any other sites sharing our plight, they have become defunct (like project x0), or they backfired in our faces (like the People v. George Lucas).

To me the maltreatment of the OOT is a big fat deal.

Besides the quality issue, how else did the GOUT not help people remember the essence of the originals?

The way in which he issued the GOUT was a clever ploy to "prove" how poor the original one was.  Now, most people walking the street believe Lucas' BS, based on the GOUT, and are thankful that he rescued it with the SE.

Plus, he relaesed the GOUT as a bonus feature (the real shame of the GOUT), and did not even take the 5 minutes to make the DVDs anamorphic. Lucas treated the originals like second-class citizens. It is an appalling and unfair treatment to these three films. The very thing that made him an undeserving billionaire and he throws it out like a used condom. What a fucking monster.
