Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

This is supposed to be SW, and GL chooses to go the cheapest route? He must think he is selling crack cocaine and not Blu-ray discs. Why not? he can get away with shitty quality because he knows people are sheep and will not do the research to avoid this release.

And the saddest thing? Lucas created most of these sheep himself.

Dude, shut the hell up, stop moping around this forum, and go download Harmy's or dark_jedi's preservations.

If you don't like my moping, then just ignore me dammit. People on this site can't admit this, but in recent years SW has done more harm than good. It took 30 years to realize the horrors unleashed because of SW's success. If the creator is the worst flaw of a franchise, than that franchise wasn't good in the first place.

Every loud, substanceless works of pure shit (e.g. Michael Bay) can undeniably trace their ancestry to SW. Cinema as an art form became economically unviable in Hollywood after 1977, and we still haven't recovered from the shock. The constant revisions and destructions of the original versions are just nature taking its course.

Does that sound mopey, Frink?

Ah yes...if SW had never existed, we'd all be so much happier, and the crap blockbuster would never have been invented by someone else in the past 30 plus years.

Sheesh.

Alright, maybe I'm just pissed that the actual SW trilogy won't be there; and that LFL has added insult to injury by adding more changes when he said his vision was what it should be in 2004. I'm pissed that all copyright laws are designed to obliterate this film instead of preserving it because it is under the thumb of a mentally ill psychopath whose control of the media is shocking, and how little effort they can put into this product.

So that's why I think all that backlash when SW came out in '77 makes sense, and the legacy it unleashed ruined everything.

Yeah, because Hollywood NEVER churned out any crap before 1977, especially not big spectacle films or crappy sequals.

I knew shit was being made before 1977, but thankfully people had more common sense back then and avoided them. I'm sure if twilight and transformers were made in 1965 they would have bombed like they should. But in the last 35 years, shlock has become acceptable to the moviegoing public.

No. Again you're objectively wrong.

The Universal Monsters, Godzillas, Planet of the Apes, James Bonds, were all money makers, which is why the studios kept churning them out.And Cleopatra was the highest grossing film of the year. 1963. How was that Lucas's fault?

Okay, it wasn't GL's fault. But compare Hollywood today and Hollywood c.1965 and you realize there is much more competition from other media (videogames, internet, cell phones, TV, etc) than there was 50 years ago (TV alone). So the studios just rely on the old same tired brand names to make money. Hence, movies have become more like products than works of art. No American studio is going to risk their money on an original idea when people would rather watch youtube on their iphones and then go home to watch a TV series on netflix instant. Film is going the way of the novel and paintings, because there is just too much shit to deal with.

I think your grasp of film history is lacking somewhat.

What's the point anymore? He'll just change them again in 2018.

The best hope for us is to wish SW never existed in the first place. Just think of all the masterpieces that could have existed if the New Hollywood wasn't stifled by ANH's sucess. There would be transformers garbage that's moving american cinema from an irreversible coma into a corpse, there would be no remakes of remakes, two-hour trailers, and films bloated into multiple parts to make a more money. If GL wants to destroy SW, we should just let him do it. It's much more constructive than slitting our wrists.

No, it's because the new generation has no taste.

Hollywood executives, producers etc are responsible for this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQStHo-u6W8

The new generation likes only shit because since its birth it eats only shit

those who are tired of it all, join me in the dark side !! The truth is here !! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GvpT_7BMAc

In the end shlock will rule the day, and American cinema will die and never recover. This and the inevitable destruction of the OUT we are all trying to deny makes life pretty hopeless for us.

I do have a guess as to why they did the "NO".  Granted, it'd be a very stupid reason, but I wouldn't put it past them to care about something so trivial and not saber colors.

It's a tradition to have a dramatic "NOOO" in every Star Wars film:

TPM: Obi-Wan after Qui-Gon is stabbed.

AOTC: Obi-Wan upon Anakin's charging at Dooku.

ROTS: Anakin before attacking Mace/Vader after waking up.

SW: Luke after Obi-Wan is killed

ESB: Luke after learning the truth.

ROTJ: Some argue Luke screams "NO" after Vader threatens to turn Leia, but "officially" he says "NEVER".  So as far as I can recall, there was never a "NO" in Jedi... until now.

Granted, I AM NOT SAYING THIS MAKES THE NEW "NO" REASONABLE BY ANY MEANS.  It still sucks like hell.  I just wanted to point out their possible motivation.

Why couldn't it be this guy instead:

"Nooo..... Noooooooooooooo!!!"

So...what did I miss....

Oh.

 ...

I'm not sure why people are shocked, given what happened in the SE previously.  Han stepping on Jabba's tail.  Gringo shooting first.  The worst musical act ever.  Hayden's creepy uncle stalker head on Shaw's body.   Gungans yelling "Wesa free!"

Not to mention the screwed up deliberate decisions regarding color and sound.

A bunch of new, terrible changes should have been expected.  And make no mistake, they are indeed terrible.  But they shouldn't be surprising.

I'm still on the fence regarding purchase, but nothing I've heard in the last few days has made a difference to me regarding that decision.

I probably knew that some changes were going to be on the set, but I am still appalled that he changed them for a third time. I don't care if there were technical "improvements" to the films. They should not be tinkered with at all once they are finished. I cannot purchase this shit. This is an affront to everything tasteful about society. I have to say this, but this PTSE nightmare has lasted longer than the Third Reich for chrissakes. I know it stupid for me to compare GL to Hitler, but IMO he has finally deserved that moniker in terms of filmmaking. Now don't get me wrong, GL is not a murderous dictator or plunging the country into a hellhole. He can make as much shlock in the vein of the PT as long as he is alive. But when he has to change the original movies every seven fucking years I lose a little of my faith in humanity.

At the very least this is a mock-up of a possibility.

You see, that's the thing about these new additions. They look like mock-ups. They look like someone took a short while to do because they didn't need to be good. As if they were just an idea. They are not something you would expect from a company that are supposed to be one of the best special effects houses in the world.

They're cheap, that's why. LFL is not a film company anymore, it's a corrupt multinational corporation that puts profit ahead of everything else. It's ironic because GL is a liberal who wrote SW as a rebellion against the "system."

I've successfully convinced one friend to cancel their Blu-Ray and pick up the 2006 DVDs instead.  Better than nothing (he wants to own them in physical form)!

And it's letterboxed!

God, why did GL have to change these films a third time? This is downright abuse of everything copyright laws were meant to do. And GL will win because he has technically broken no law (legally, not ethically), since the works of art are his. With the advent of these 2011 changes, he truly is a monster

We should just petition to bring back standard (4:3) TVs so we don't have to see four black bars around the OUT.

Good Lord.  What is with this company's dogged insistence on sticking almost everything from the OT into a cramped little corner?

Luke Skywalker?  Who's that?

Oh, just some random bit part in, I don't know, maybe two films, was it?

I can't tell if Leia is happy or about to murder someone. And what the hell is up with the evil eyed Jawas? Did some of those undead dwarfs from the Phantasm movies get in this by mistake?

I can think of any film franchise in history that marginalizes the PROTAGONIST of the original film so much. And likewise I have never seen anyone so desperate to make people like shockingly awful films.

The originals are not there! That should cause people to march on the streets.

No other  video release is sold like this, in which the ONLY thing that matters is not EVEN there. This should not even be sold as SW, but people will inevitably ignore it. What a shame. It is LIKE someone watching a brutal murder, and saying or doing nothing to stop it.

And don't trust these initial reviews.

Lucas, just go back to the original sources and rescan them without all this tampering. It's not that hard.

I know, it's easy; every director has done that for video transfers. But Lucas has twisted everything so much that common sense no longer exists for him.

If the franchise's greatest flaw is its creator, what does that say about the franchise? I can no longer understand why SW became so great back then.

Shrug all you want, but a work of art is still being wiped off the map.

Were not denying that, but outlandish hyperbole and mearly sitting on your ass complaining about it is boring.  Less flair, more accuracy, more creativity to your concern might convince someone else.

But speaking of 'being wiped off the map'  this review has been pulled down:

http://productmarketing.com/2011/08/20/star-wars-on-blu-ray-on-sep-19-700am.html

google had the opening line as:

Star Wars on Blu-Ray ((on: sep 19 7:00am)). By Steve Johnson on August 20, 2011.
Be disappointed all over again in high-resolution with 40 extra hours of ...

It's kinda frustrating when LFL has become so powerful that to do something other than sit on your ass is shot down within 5 minutes. We just want the originals, but unfortunately they had to be created by one of the most stubborn, arrogant pricks in the film industry.

It's still sad to see such horribleness in the official trailers like the messed up sabers crossed in front of Palpy. I guess they figure the average Joe wouldn't notice or care. (and they're right...)

Hey, that's LFL policy to trust that the viewer will never notice how slipshod the product is. That's why everything they have made since Raiders has that half-assed feel to it, whether it be actual movies or video releases of the movies. It's a silent holocaust, and unfortunately Joe Public will still not care, whether now or 20 years from now. And that is why future DVD releases of SW will always suck.

yet there are two 90 minute documentaries on Star Wars parodies and the motherfucking legion of manchildren (or whatever those people call themselves).

Okay, I have to step in here. The 501st is the largest SW Costumeclub in the world. They do a lot of charitywork, going to hospitals to cheer up sick children etc.

http://www.501st.com/mission.php

I'm a member for 10 years now, and I did not see any "manchildren" there. BTW, we have a lot of women there...

On the other side, I agree with you, that those documentaries don't belong on this BD set.

I apologize. I did not know they did they did charity. I feel like a dick for saying that. Maybe I should think before I post (duh).

They still shouldn't be on the set while the originals are excluded. That's nonsense.
