OFFICIAL: Library of Congress had original prints replaced with 1997 SE
Time

Checkmate. We might as well shut down the site. Thousands buy the mutilated versions, and the original prints are going to be destroyed despite all our efforts. When has writing to your congressman ever worked? We don't want it to happen, but it happened anyway...

Every time I hear about GL, he hits a new low for me. He will be victorious, and none of you cannot deny that anymore.

PS I don't care about your rebuttals.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Disappointing that Bill Hunt gave the movie a big shrug and a, "Well, it's Star Wars on Blu-Ray" like everyone else. From everything we've seen, read and heard, this release sounds objectively off-putting (SE changes or no). I can't imagine anything other than Star Wars being given such a lazy pass, considering all the quality inconsistencies and missing bits this set seems to have.

My god, Predator sent shockwaves the world 'round (I'm exaggerating, I know), and a substandard release of the biggest movie franchise in history is, apparently, going to be successful regardless of quality.

It's not that I'm shocked and horrified—but I am disappointed.

Lucasfilm clouds everything. The truth is that these BD's have absolutely no value. But since GL is so greedy for more money, he has to force every reviewer to give this a positive review, or else. Could you imagine what would happen if Michael Bay or Uwe Boll forced all film critics to give their films a four-star/A rating, or theres would be serious negative consequences? This is exactly what GL is doing, for no other reason that it is SW, which has ceased to become a film and is now a consumer brand no one can question.

What I find amusing is that OT purists get a bad rap for being rapid, whiny, spiteful fanboys (of which there are some), but the people who constantly beg for scraps from Lucas' table are somehow "better fans."

It's even more amusing when you realize they themselves are "rapid, whiny, spiteful fanboys". They just spew their vitroil at "haters" instead of Lucas.

For me it is more of an artistic struggle, the UOT should be shown to public and and be made readily available. Destroying it would be a real shame that should not happen, period.

The fact that the versions Lucas prefers are in bad quality themselves is also a shame; it gives off the impression that GL is a cutthroat businessman who puts minimal effort for maximum profit. It's the worst of corporate greed when he puts little thought into the quality of even the PTSE or how it is packaged. And then forcing people to buy this new version by making all others unavailable, plus forcing mainstream BD reviewers to give it positive reviews? That's where I draw the line.

Sure, I suspect some diehards will wince and grouse about Darth Vader's newly added ''Nooo!'' at the climax of Return of the Jedi in this set (Lucas just couldn't help himself, could he?), but there's no denying that every film looks better on Blu-ray than it ever has before. Whether it's the crisper white tundras on the ice planet Hoth or the inkier fog-shrouded swamps of Dagobah, Lucas has for the most part done right by his fans this time...as much as it pains this geek to admit it

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't most people confirmed the blue tint in ESB is still there? That is, white snow is actually bluish? I doubt this guy even looked at the discs for more than 5 minutes, but I thought we might as well get the "SW on blu OMG!" train moving.

I like how in the opening of the review, they say fan geeks fear change. But does it make sense that a movie should be significantly changes constantly and destroy the older copy? No, it doesn't; we are told to accept the change when most of the time directors don't add CGI to their decades-old movies and alter the plot of the film.

Incidentally, what's the worst thing that ever happened to you?  And you can't answer anything having to do with Star Wars because your judgment is clearly warped in that case.  Who is the closest person to you to have died?  What is the worst thing that has happened to someone close to you?

My wife and I had a tragedy once.  And if you think what has happened to Star Wars is even one-tenth of one percent as horrible as what happened to us, well...you are a sad, sad person.

Alright, I understand; the loss of a person does not compare to the loss of a movie. I'll try to tone down my comments and try to refrain from any more nazi comparisons.

Maybe not that extreme. But we'll never see the OUT in the quality it deserves. The damage has been done. They were already deteriorating when GL started making the SE, and 20 more years' worth of damage has been done to these movies. It pisses me off that of all the Blu-rays that will be released in the coming years, the OUT will never be there. We shouldn't resort to preserving these films ourselves, something every film studio has done to all movies that have survived to this day, but LFL ignores because they can't tell they are making a new movie every few years based on the OT, and telling people it is SW, and saying you can go fuck yourself if you don't agree with GL. It's like watching your children slowly die of cancer. I know some of you are going to be upset about that, but that is roughly what is happening to these movies. The quality of these Blu-rays is utter shit and no one can say that because LFL has a gun to their head and telling them to say only good things about this release. Did anyone expect this nightmare scenario 25 years ago? No. No one seems to understand this: I wouldn't be so upset here, on this website, if GL had done the proper work in the first place fuck up the OT with all these SE changes ... Deleted... And he continues to show no remorse.

Having lost a loved one to cancer, I can't help but find your analogy a little bit distasteful. There are better ways to make a point.

By my rough estimation, 7.4 out of 8.7 frevious posts are distasteful.  It's like listening to a teenager moan about how awful life is because of a hangnail.  Except the teenager says the hangnail is worse than cancer.  Or Hitler.  Or rape.  Or {fill in wildly inappropriate comparison here}.

Is losing three films comparable to a hangnail? And I don't want Lucas to actually die; I was only venting my frustrations at him. And I'm 25, not a teenager.

Then act your age.

On a scale of hangnail to cancer, the Star Wars films are much closer to a hangnail. Seriously, stop giving us a bad name around the rest of the 'net.

Were still losing the films; I can deal with the prequels existing, they are just bad movies. But destroying films because one has a vision to continually update them? Why do I get the feeling the Frink would just laugh off the worst tragedies in human history? A loss is still a loss, how in the hell is that insignificant?

I think GL hasn't aged beyond the 18 year-old loner who wanted to drive cars real fast. But his near-death accident put a hold on his real dreams forever. Since fate could not allow him to be a racer his whole life, I feel he wanted to create a film that millions would love, then gradually destroy it as an act of revenge. He was never a filmmaker in my eyes, just a bitter man who wanted others to feel as bitter and angry at life as he was. It explains Anakin in the PT a lot: the whiny, detached human being who considers himself more important than he really is. And now he has deliberately destroyed three films, something one would have expected in the 1920s-1930s, but not in recent times.

There's one phrase I've learned to hate more than any other:

"It's Star Wars on Bluray!"

So many arguments I've read boil down to somebody saying that.

"Sure, the movies still have all the problems of the old DVD's, and Lucas is the only director in the history of cinema to suppress his original movies, BUT IT'S STAR WARS ON BLURAY!"

But they don't realize it is not Star Wars on Blu-ray. It is six direct-to-video impostors calling themselves the Star Wars films. This suppression should boil the blood of every person who cares about movies. I was wise to not give in to the hype; I never even bothered to buy it before the Vader NOOO in Jedi. And as I thought, the PR on how "great" these Blu-rays are is complete bullshit. This is scaring me; no one is honest enough anymore out of this site to stand up to GL. It's like LFL is forcing them to give this release a good review. GL will succeed in his ambitions of destroying these three films. Trust me.

I'm just pissed off that nothing good will be released in this set; and even if they release another set in a few years, do you think the originals will be on there, and in good quality? Of course not. The original three movies were so great, and they will never be given the treatment they deserve. It has left an irreplaceable hole in our culture. It is like literally losing a lung; you really can't go on or find some other sci-fi film to replace the gaping void that eats you on a daily basis. I hate to say this a hundred thousand times, but this is an irreparable blow to our artistic/cinematic/cultural psyche. And to think there wasn't enough corporate greed these days.

Not worth your time!? I'm the only person here who knows what is going on with the SW franchise, and how ultimately, GL will win in destroying the original films outside of fan preservations. Never will we get to see Han Solo shoot first, Sebastian Shaw's warm smile at the end of Jedi, and Vader's silent decision to save Luke in the quality these films deserve. Since it is inevitable that GL will win over us, he needs to be punished for the damage he has done to our cultural heritage. I ask you all again, what is the point? All you have ever succeeded in doing is make two petitions that failed, and substandard bootlegs that are still going to be behind the curve 20 years from now.

Jeez, this guy's about as rude as Uwe Boll! If he were any other celebrity he would have gotten SO much crap for that.

What do the Lucas lovers over TFN think about this story I wonder?

And casual fans will, by apathy, approve of these unacceptable changes. You should look up the psychological term "Deindividuation"

The fact that a lot of people aren't as discerning in their taste for Star Wars, don't have photographic memory, or care enough about their entertainment choices to do online research before buying a movie you're actually calling deindividuation?

Really?

Really?

Alright, I used the wrong word.

Otherwise, they have no real knowledge that it's not the actual product, and subsequently they do nothing. Look up Burke and his quote on doing nothing.
