ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!
Time

Ah, AOTC, where the balance of the franchise was sent into the red.
Now SW belongs in the same league as the Alien and Terminator franchises. I’m afraid TFA will be Terminator Genisys all over again.

JEDI TAINTED EVERYTHING I CAN NEVER HAVE A PEACEFUL NIGHTS SLEEP AGAIN WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN I LOOK AT THE GOOD FILMS I SEE PAIN I HAD TO GET RID OF THE PREQUELS NOW I HAVE TO LET GO OF JEDI TOO EVEN IF TFA IS GOOD THAT MEANS JEDI WILL NO LONGER BE THE THIRD BEST SW MOVIE IT’S ALL A LOSE LOSE SITUATION ARRRRGHHHH!!!

Just watch Star Wars and ESB then go in and watch TFA imagining that it was the third film and it refers to grand events that were not seen in the cinema and see if that make the new film an interesting “episode 3”.

Then how did Han get unfrozen and meet Finn and Rey?

Scoundrelly 😄

Aw, but you’ll miss out on the Luke/Emperor scenes.

The carbon freezing unit broke down on a hot day. The rest writes itself.

I’d rather watch ROTJ though. The DSII battle was quite impressive.

I don’t care for Kurtz at all unless all the problems with ROTJ and the prequels were caused by low budgets and short schedules. You could make a case that McQuarrie, Marcia, Kasdan, and Kershner made Star Wars good, but Kurtz is nothing more than an incompetent producer who blames his employers for everything.

You take that back about Kurtz. He was the one who helped reign in the actors’ performances in Star Wars and Empire. He kept Lucas at bay so we didn’t end up with a robot headed Luke or Green lizard Han Solo.

Doesn’t matter;the final score is 2-4, with another three bases loaded. We have lost.

What if we’re at bat though? The ST could be the best thing to happen to Star Wars in 35 years. If they’re good will you change your sig to 5 out of 9?

Somehow, I doubt it. Even if the sequels are great you’ll find something to dislike.

If they’re great I’ll defend them wholeheartedly. I’m actually more of a three out of six man myself.

Again, this is why Gary Kurtz was purged from Star Wars so that we can never have a perfect trilogy and have thirty-five years and counting of unrelenting misery.

According to the relevant information available, Kurtz was fired already during ESB because he didn’t manage to do his job as a producer. He let principal photography to go way over schedule and way over budget (something that is unacceptable for a big studio production, let alone self-financed production). Even if he stayed things wouldn’t be much different. Lucas always had it his way. Even in ANH since studio didn’t seem to care.

Convenient excuse; Lucas was jealous that Kurtz made a better film than he ever could. Empire is the best because Lucas has almost zero involvement, and conversely Jedi is the weakest. The Ewoks and twincest were all George’s idea.

Again, this is why Gary Kurtz was purged from Star Wars so that we can never have a perfect trilogy and have thirty-five years and counting of unrelenting misery. I now envy every person who disliked Star Wars back in 1977; they were the lucky ones. Even hardcore Star Wars fans hate 99.9% of things associated with the franchise, and it’s all thanks to Jedi. This is probably the worst tragedy of the late 20th century.

I think the PT and ROTJ have the potential to be as good as ESB but that potential is squandered by the lack of grounding in the fantasy. The rebels in the first two films feel like real people. The threat of the Imperials feels tangible. Adding puppets and later CGI to the pro and antagonists makes both sides feel less realistic. The aliens are either depicted as plausible replacements for real world archetypes (the Tuskens represent the resistance of first peoples against colonists for example) or a background characters in the first two films. The exceptions (Chewie and Yoda) paved the way for aliens beings taking more of the centre stage but the technology used to depict them is less and less phyical and the effect is that they become increasingly divorced from physical reality.
The Sandpeople are depicted as physical beings with interesting details in their costumes that speak of a culture beyond what is said.
The Ewoks and Gungans could have filled a similar role but they look increasingly less physical and are played for laughs. Even the Jawas have a sinister edge to them and yet I felt genuinely sad for them when were slaughtered by Storm Troopers. One feels the beginning of that with the Ewoks but none of that at all with Gungans. Similarly the droids are physical in the first two films and treated as abused characters which we are supposed to care for. In ROTJ they become more puppetised and the subject of very strange jokes (the droid torture scene is really out of place compared to the torture scenes in ANH and ESB). They then become comic animated characters in the PT the battle droids lacking any menace and lacking any sense of sympathy.
Jedi is where the rot set in. The PT is just rotten.

LuckyGungan, this explains the TWO OUT OF SEVEN signature. If the PT were never made, things would have been a lot more tolerable, becuase Jedi is just a natural extenstion of creators being exhausted with a franchise. It’s not bad at all and in hindsight is much more forgivable. But then we got three anti-films from Lucas himself, and the once sacred franchise was thrown out of orbit forever, only to be possibly thrown off course yet agin by the corporate suits at Disney.

We still have a 13:1 ratio of good to bad in this franchise. No amount of ranting will improve ROTJ or make it perfect, and it’s falling short is the worst disaster ever. Star Wars will never be good again; why, why, why did this happen?

Whoa, high standards! Most would say that a 13:1 ratio of good to bad is pretty darn good. 😉

Damn it, I meant a 1:13 ratio of good years to bad!

To me, everything hinges on ROTJ. But outside consensus says it all went downhill after ESB. Compounded with the SE and prequels, you get the current hysteria.

So… it hinges… so did it succeed, or fail? Do you agree with this “outside consensus”?

I’m not really sure. I don’t want to parrot what everyone has already said. I want to defend ROTJ, but I understand why people don’t like it.

We still only have TWO movies in the end, and nothing is going to change that. I can’t think of any franchise in the history of civilization that has a track record this bad, and such a long drought since the last good movie.

Frankly, I wish I never encountered Star Wars in the first place, because it is a Faustian bargain of endless misery.
