There’s this one storyline in TCW about this gargantuan creature that had indestructible skin, so much so that even lightsabers bounced off it. After killing it Palpatine commissions a secret cloning of the creature to research its skin impregnable properties.

What bothers me is that this story is never brought up again. Don’t know if there was a Legends continuity comic or something that wrapped up the story, but under the Disney canon the story remains unresolved.

OK, the creature is called the Zillo Beast. Any thoughts on this unresolved storyline?

Movie Preservation and Home Media: An Opinion

Although I don’t have 4K items as in 4K TV and a 4K Blu-ray player I remember reading about all of Christopher Nolan’s movies minus Memento and Insomnia being re-released on 4K and sourced from brand new masters personally supervised by Nolan himself.

Has anyone seen them? If so how do they look? Specifically The Dark Knight, is it closer to the colour timing of the film prints?

Malazan Book of the Fallen (full spoilers)
Time

I hope this thread gains traction.

Wanting to read an epic fantasy book series I found a few posts online praising this as perhaps the best fantasy book series, so I spent the last five months reading the main series plus the first three Novels of the Malazan Empire and few short stories. Holy shit! This is one massive book series, and right now I’m feeling burned out and have chosen to take some time off.

Let me start by talking about what I liked. The best part for me was the themes of the relationship between the human and the divine, the remnants of civilisations long lost and forgotten and the grand manifestations of magic and other fantastic forces, but there were also several things I didn’t like, for instance setting up events that ultimately lead nowhere, storylines that are left unresolved, and the most boring part for me were the military campaigns.

Considering how well the books have sold and how critically acclaimed they are I have to say I’m surprised there’s not a single pop culture reference anywhere and were it not for a random online comment I would be completely unaware of the series.

James Bond 007 Thread
Time

Most people cite Connery as the best Bond, or their favourite, but after reading a few of Ian Fleming’s books, and looking at that commissioned portrait of James Bond according to Fleming’s imagination, Timothy Dalton IS James Bond.

In terms of physical appearance and demeanour, Dalton is the one who comes closest to Fleming’s original version of the character, the only difference being that Bond is described as having blue eyes and Dalton has green eyes.

Ranking the Alien films
Time

So I am not alone in my opinion of Aliens. That’s great.

If I had done Alien 3 I would have had the xenomorph from the first movie landing in the prison planet after many years adrift in the vacuum of space, focusing entirely on the prisoners and leaving Ripley out of the story. It would have kept with the whole dealing with an unknown life form, as they would have to figure it out, but then again many would accuse me of repeating the formula of the first movie.

Movie Preservation and Home Media: An Opinion
Time

Been a while but I think this thread deserves to be brought back on track.

I recently watched Terminator 2: Judgement Day Director’s cut and was sorely disappointed with the look of the movie. The movie looks like it was sourced from a mid 1990s telecine, which I suspect was the same source used for the laserdisc and DVD.

T2 is one of the greatest movies of all time and such a classic deserves a far better treatment than this.

Ranking the Alien films
Time

It wasn’t until a few months ago when I finally watched Aliens, previously the only thing I knew about the movie is that everyone hails it as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, some even ranking it above the first Alien.

Honestly, I found Aliens to be a pretty generic movie and don’t know what all the buzz around the movie is about.

I know, many of you will accuse me of blasphemy, but the movie simply didn’t do it for me.

Like, I’d be ok with them having a kind of presence in the force, like a vibration or something (crystal vibrations are something that plays right into the mysticism angle). I mean, that idea works well with the scene where Chirrut senses Jyn’s necklace in Rogue One.

But having them be semi-sentient and Sith having to bend them to their will to get them to work? And then “bleeding” in response? It’s just dumb.

Exactly. Even in the old Legends continuity there were Sith who didn’t wield red lightsabers, like Exar Kun.

I remember when I was a kid me and a friend speculated that if the Emperor were to wield a lightsaber it would be purple, implying a deeper connection to the dark side. Of course we were just a couple of kids brainstorming over idle subjects.

According to the Disney canon, Kyber crystals are inherently resistant to the dark side of the Force, and dark siders must bend them to their will for them to work in their lightsabers, creating a bleeding effect which is why all dark siders have red lightsabers.

If that’s the case then Anakin’s lightsaber should have stopped working because it would have sensed his turn to the dark side in ROTS, or at least should have turned red due to Anakin’s dark side influence, but no, it keeps functioning as normal when used for very obvious dark side actions like slaughtering children.

What are you reading?
Time

Just finished reading the main series of Malazan Book of the Fallen, plus a few short stories and the first three Novels of the Malazan Empire.

Whew, now that is one massive book series. I think I’ll take a break and then read the remaining three Novels of the Malazan Empire, once I’m done with those I’ll read the first two books of the Kharkanas Trilogy and the Path to Ascendancy.

Has anyone else read the books?

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Unlike many, I have no expectations whatsoever regarding this movie. In fact my interest in the ST in general died after watching TFA, and I fully expected TLJ to be much the same, a copy-paste of TESB like TFA is to the first SW movie, which thankfully wasn’t the case.

The moment they announced Abrams was being brought back to replace Trevorrow, which was a few months before TLJ premiered, was the moment the movie was officially dead to me, and watching the trailers it’s pretty obvious TROS will be another piece of regurgitated pop culture, just like anything directed by Abrams.

Star Wars Video Games - a general Random Thoughts thread
Time

One thing that always bothered me about KOTOR II - TSL is the influence system, in which you can gain either positive or negative influence with your party members, by saying or doing stuff that they can agree or disagree with, and positive influence will bring them closer to your LS/DS alignment and negative influence will make them go the other way, opening up new dialogue options, and in some cases train them in the ways of the Force.

My problem is if you have negative influence your companions will open up to you. That doesn’t make any sense. Think about it, my companion dislikes me so much that they are now willing to tell me more about themselves, and later, they disapprove so strongly of my comments and actions that they now want me to train them in the ways of the Force. That’s not how relationships work. I would want to have everyone on my side.

Most Baffling Complaint of a Star Wars Movie
Time

For me the most baffling complaint about Star Wars has been one brought up by Jeremy Jahns about Mace Windu’s lightsaber. He was bothered about Mace’s lightsaber being purple, and that lightsaber blades should only be blue or green for the good guys and red for the bad guys. I see nothing wrong with lightsaber blades being whatever colour people want them to be. Hell, I myself would like to see an orange-bladed lightsaber introduced in the Disney canon.
