Mother! Starring Jennifer Lawrence.

A weird movie about a cycle that repeats itself over and over, at least that’s how I saw it. I later found out that the movie is full of Judeo-Christian symbolism and themes, but since I’m not a religious person all that was lost on me. I also wonder if Jennifer Lawrence did topless for real or they used a body double with Lawrence’s face superimposed.

I think Jennifer Lawrence has already done topless for real 😉

(she obviously didn’t like the invasion of privacy, or having security on her phone, along with a host of other actors and celebrities)

A good and talented actress - a captivating quality to her, even when in films that don’t really appeal.

I don’t think the movie was bad at all, just weird.

I really liked There Will Be Blood, but that’s due to Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance more than anything else. A lesser actor in the role and I probably wouldn’t even remember it.

I watched that movie based on all the excellent reviews and was bored to death by that movie. Absolutely nothing happens, and Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance was over the top.

Since this is the unpopular opinion thread I think it’s appropriate for me to add that I also think Daniel Day-Lewis is an overrated actor.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s movies are consistently showered in praise and he’s considered one of the best filmmakers of his generation, however I don’t get the hype.

I’ve seen most of his movies and found them to be the definition of boring, yet several movie critics and fans seem to have a massive hard-on for them. The Master is the only one of his movies I can watch and not so much because I think it’s a good movie, but because it was shot on 70mm film and I enjoy the look of the movie, it’s total eye candy.

The one thing I do respect about him is that he’s one of the few movie director who still shoots on film stock.

Even though she is best known as a sex symbol, and if I’m allowed some hyperbole, one of the most attractive women in the history of mankind, I think Christina Hendricks is a genuinely talented and underrated actress. Since Mad Men she’s done mostly bit parts and supporting roles, which is a damn shame.

Most people agree with you that PoA is the best, although I’m not sure why. It’s fine, don’t get me wrong, but the cold colors and questionable use of the uniforms really rubs me the wrong way. I also don’t see what elements plotwise raise it above the others in people’s eyes. People also seem to rate Deathly Hallows really high and the Columbus films really low which just seems so backwards to me.

But now looking through a ranking thread on r/movies, there seem be a lot of people actually putting the Columbus films right below Cuaron’s, while the bottom tends to be a Yates film (although tbf, he directed half of them, so it’s statistically likely). The people there also seem to dislike GoF for some reason. It seems to be in the bottom three of most people’s rankings, which is strange cuz I thought it was mostly pretty strong. Granted, it’s plot is based around an enormous gaping plothole, and the tournament feels like a lame excuse for action scenes, but it’s certainly more interesting then what came after it. DHP2 seems to perform relatively well, if only by virtue of being the finale. Personally, I felt the execution left much to be desired.

I don’t know why GoF is rated so low. I personally find it to be the best adaptation of a HP book, besides Harry Potter sports long hair, and I’ve always been of the opinion that there is nothing cooler than a guy with long hair.

I also enjoy Half-blood Prince quite a lot, mostly because it has a very British feel to it, although I take issue with the movie being so dark you can’t make out what’s going on.

The 1995 movie Heat, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is perhaps one of the most overrated movies of all time.

I remember watching it based on the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth I got from people, and honestly, apart from the conversation between Pacino and De Niro at the café, and climactic bank heist near the end, I found Heat to be a pretty forgettable movie.

Clownhouse (1989)

The disturbing thing about this film is that this guy, the director, molested the 12 year old boy who starred in it and VIDEOTAPED IT!!!

That’s just sick. Where I’m from we don’t tolerate that kind of thing and yet he still went on to make films.

Yeah, I remember him. He later directed the movie Powder, the one about the albino boy with supernatural powers. Because of his participation in the movie I’m disappointed with Jeff Goldblum, one of my all-time favourite actors. Oh well, I guess nobody’s perfect.

Agreed on Aliens, and don’t understand why everyone regards it as some sort of high art.

On that note here’s my unpopular opinion: James Cameron’s movies are amongst the most overrated movies of all time, T1 and T2 are his only worthwhile films. Titanic is a cheesy soap opera that has aged poorly, and I will forever remain baffled by the overwhelmingly positive reception Avatar got ten years ago, with people reacting as if they’d never seen a movie before in their lives, a movie that has pretty much been forgotten. The weirdest thing is that there are people who rank James Cameron amongst the greatest filmmakers of all time.

On the flip side I am a huge Michael Bay fan who has enjoyed each and every one of his movies, even the Transformers movies all the way to The Last Knight, and it’s not even as a guilty pleasure, I genuinely enjoy Michael Bay’s movies. What has always left me scratching my head is the near constant vitriol aimed at Bay from movie critics and fans alike.

What are you reading?
Time

I assume many of you here have read Frank Herbert’s Dune books, so I’d like to know: Are they worth reading?
It is my understanding that the Dune saga, particularly the first book, influenced Star Wars, among others of course (Flash Gordon, etc), the biggest difference being that while SW is morally very black and white, Dune is filled with moral complexity. I’ve also read that the first first book is arguably the only feel-good one, with the following books deconstructing the Messiah image built up around Paul, and the story growing progressively more cynical with each passing book. The only reason I’m a bit hesitant because I know Frank Herbert died before wrapping up the saga and his son and some other writer wrote the latter books based on notes left by Frank, and that kinda turns me away.

The reason I’m asking is because I want a space opera akin to Star Wars with more adult themes, and according to movie director Denis Villeneuve that’s exactly what Dune is, Star Wars for adults, which is why my interest is piqued.

Vice, starring Christian Bale as Dick Cheney.

Saw it with my father who was very interested in the movie because he worked in Halliburton for several years and he got to personally meet with Dick Cheney a few times. After we were finished watching the movie I asked him how accurate did he find this portrayal of Cheney compared to the Cheney he knew and he said it’s a pretty accurate portrayal. I later found out that Cheney himself saw the movie and didn’t like it, and when I told my dad his reply was “I’m not surprised.”

Design failures (and successes) of the PT
Time

When I first saw the trailer for TPM over twenty years ago I remember being very confused by what I saw. Everything looked so fancy and futuristic I initially thought it was the future, until I saw Ewan McGregor being called Obi-Wan Kenobi and being introduced to a kid called Anakin Skywalker, which confused me even further, and it wasn’t until a few repeat viewings that it dawned on me that this was actually taking place BEFORE the OT.

I think Prometheus and Alien Covenant are guilty of the same, having a sci-fi aesthetic that reflects the trends of today even though they take place before the first Alien movie, where they should have stayed consistent with the 1970s look, creating a very jarring effect in which the future seems to have taken a giant leap backwards in terms of technological advances.

As for wardrobe, in the OT people dressed rather simply, and the closest we ever get to fancy clothing are those dignitaries in the Emperor’s Throne Room. In the PT it looks like Lucas had his people raid discarded costumes from the set of The Fifth Element. The clothing is so fancy and baroque, and in my view the worst offenders are the Jedi Order. The Jedi are supposed to dress in humble robes, but my first impression of young Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn was that their robes looked too fancy to be considered simple.

I will always have a soft spot for the Naboo Starfighter, though.
