Idea: Integrating the two trilogies thread
Time

I've always liked the idea of flashbacks, and way I envisioned Star Wars, when I get around to it, was three movies, versus six.  The first focusing on Anakin, the second on Luke, and the third on Luke and Vader.  Each movie would be formed in a similar way to LOTR, as all three movies start with flashbacks.  This same principal, although, could be applied to each of the Star Wars movies, if you wanted to retain the six movie structure (or five if you hate TPM)

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist

My concern with PT:R, is will Ady will be able to redo almost all the vfx of the PT, because the PT and the OT look absolutely nothing alike.  Honestly, I like the look of the PT (but not the horrible CGI) more so than the OT (more modern, you could say), which is the reason I love Angel's mockups of the OT.

Now, Adywan has the opposite approach, it seems. To make PT:R be truly like the OT, it has to match it visually on so many levels.  It would require so much new material and fx shots, it's overwhelming.  I really can't wait to see Adywan will do.

Either way, both Angel's and Ady's visions are huge ideas that could take a lot to accomplish, which is why I can't imagine seeing any of this stuff soon.

Info Wanted : Prequel Deleted Scenes -- those that are, those that aren't
Time

Still from what I've heard from the many articles I've read there is definitely enough scenes deleted (yet most of them obviously still not released) to make full star wars length fan edits of the PT movies.   A scene I would specifically want to see would be:

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/02/11/star-wars-deleted-scene-revenge-of-the-sith-jar-jar-binks/

It would really help to refine jar-jar's stupid character, plus it helps to add a darker mood to ROTS.

This is the problem I have.

While I'd rather have less nonsense Star Wars films have a well defined length.

I dare to dream that a fanfilm/fanedit hybrid will one day add new material which works with the story (or makes the story work) with the best of the existing material giving us a PT of feature length episodes worthy of the name Star Wars.

I'm pretty sure that's what Ady's PT:R is going to be, considering all that I've heard about it.

Gonna start reposting old clips from the Youtube days. These are from a old version of the movie, so expect some fx or audio issues. These problems are taken care of now

Clip 2  - Anakin vs Obi (upload might not be complete yet. If not, just check back later)

I posted this idea awhile back, but I thought I'd make a proof-of-concept mockup.
This is just an idea, so the video is awfully edited, but I think it gets the point across.

Impressive, what you did there!  It really works well.  Tweek the dialogue a little and there you go.  Definitely adds depth to Grievous's character.

I figured out After Effects Roto Brush which is pretty damn cool. Unfortunately, in the scene described above R2 has a bluish tint all around so trying to change his color at all affects him entirely. Looks terrible.

It might work if I use the secondary color correction tools in Speedgrade and export the look file and apply it in AE.  I'll just grab a freeze frame from the AVI version and try it...  (btw, when tracking footage you can have it track frame by frame and make adjustments if needed to keep it tracked.  Also making the track point bigger helps, but also slow down tracking time.)

EDIT:  Well, fixing R2 in space is pretty much impossible, but maybe it's not needed.  If he's just any other droid, does he have to be recolored in every scene?  So maybe with preplanning you could only recolor him in areas that work, make sense story wise, and don't cause continuity errors within the film.

Alright.  Rough Cut of Episode 1 Complete, and beginning of Episode 2 has started.

Episode 1 picks up in the middle of the Maul battle, new CGI Yoda gives Obi-wan HIS student, Anakin, and at the Funural, Mace questions if Obi-wan is ready for his own apprentice.

CUT TO EPISODE 2

Begins with Obi-wan and Anakin in front of the council after completing a mission.  Mission was completed, but the Council isn't happy with the WAY it was completed.  Apparently Anakin is a bit of a show off and a little too aggressive.

CUT TO ANAKIN and OBI in ELEVATOR

Rather than investigating an assanination plot, Anakin is taking Obi-wan to reveal that he intends to marry Padme.  After discussion, being the good friend spoken of in the OT, Obi Wan reluctantly supports the decision while still knowing the Council would never approve.

Palpatine knows of Anakins intentions and already has his plan in motion to turn him to the dark side...hence the FIRST assassination attempt while Padme is sleeping.

Anakin and Padme then leave to be married  immediately at Palpatine's suggeston, while Obi-Wan is sent by Yoda and Mace to secretly investigate the clone army ordered by the council.  It is common knowledge that the council ordered the creation of an army, but the Jedi suspect something isn't right.

That is the story I am building from, or at least will attempt to build from....we'll see what develops.

That's really a great plot you have going there.  Nice work!

I haven't seen your edit yet. (I plan to soon!) But you can probably color-correct R2 by making a simple mask and doing a hue/saturation effect. Just grab the blue channel and move it to red or something. I'm not sure what editing software you use, but lots of programs can do that.

Took me awhile to figure that out, but it revolutionized my editing.

I edit in Final Cut Pro 7. With his moving and whatnot I don't think a mask will work easily in this software. I'm pretty much done with the edits (still need to built the discs for 2 and 3) but since I have some time I will see if I can learn track mattes well enough in AE to pull this off.

In AE, you could do a secondary color correction and select the R2 blue and shift it to yellow, green, red or whatever and put a very rough mask around him just to avoid selection of surrounding objects and then parent the mask to a tracking null of R2.

I have and I just watched the movie and it rules and it's a faithful adaptation. It doesn't have an indie soundtrack either - no lyrics unless you get the CD. Not comparable to Twilight.

The Hunger Games although does have an effective use of editing in the action sequences, that I do like.  Another thing is the use of shaking cameras, (so much my friend found herself motion sick after the movie).

Are you concerned about viewing order? 3 125 minute movies would allow an interesting presentation. About 85 minutes for ANH, 40 minutes for the first half of ESB ending with a cliff hanger (true identity of Yoda or hanging on the SD?.)  The second could be about 45 minutes of the last half ESB ending with a cliff-hanger, then 80 minutes of a TG style PT ending on a cliff-hanger.  The third movie could be 30-40 minutes of PT where everything goes to hell then 85-95 minute ROTJ.

Actually for parts 2 and 3 I'll do some rearranging of events, so I can allow part 2 to end right as Darth Vader reveals the truth to Luke.  I wouldn't want to be left with just ROTJ for part 3.  Part 3 will start off like Return Of The King starts off, showing Anakin becoming and living as Darth Vader.

Just curious, but has anyone here on the forums ever suggested or made a thread suggesting a single edit out the 3 prequels?

I feel like it's an idea that's been kicked around before but didn't see anything similar under 'search'.

I'll start working on my own 3-in-1 edit of the prequels, named Skywalker, this summer.  It is focused explicitly on Anakin and uses new music and colour correction to create a completely new atmosphere, one similar to the Twilight movies and The Hunger Games.  It will be part of a trilogy, where Part 2 will be focused on Luke and Part 3 is focused on both Luke and Anakin after Luke has discovered the truth about Vader.
