Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)
Time

Looking at what you guys have commented on, there is a probably one best way to do this.  I will make a a film effects/colour timing adjusted version (with minor recolouring only, changing blue to OT blue, green to match OT green, purple to match OT purple, interiors of spaceships are recoloured gray) for V1.  I can then later on do a V2 after I finish my own Prequel edits.

This is really the best because some people don't mind things like the purple lightsaber or blue lasers and such.  Plus I could release it out in a reasonable time, say this year.  But for a V2, I could do more drastic recolouring (which specifics can be discussed at a latter time) and some new CGI.  This V2 would take longer, but would be worth it in the long run.

But, even though V1 wouldn't be as drastic, it will still be something no one has seen before in terms of prequel color correction.

Help Wanted: The Prequel Edit Problem - remove the music & sound effects without removing the dialogue...
Time

Proven again, rescoring helps the movies so much.

Also, BTW I have been trying to get back at this with several new methods of music/SFX removal that I've come up with myself.  They're really experimental, but if I can figure out how to execute them just right, I may be able to isolate the vocals perfectly.

I'm repairing my computer this week, so I'll get to work on it soon, and hopefully I'll get much better results.

Why is yellow a good idea and purple isn't? Seems silly to me.

The point of the yellow saber was to still give the old jedi order a special saber color chosen by few.  Technically it only existed in the EU, and was more of a golden color.

One advantage would be to sell off Dooku as some sort of Rogue jedi, who was actually good friends with Qui-Gon, and had Qui-Gon lived, Qui-Gon may actually have joined Dooku.  I know it's a weird twist, but it's been discussed before by other editors.  I would have also had others have it to show they aren't completely odd out, like I mentioned before.

Now, Mace Windu on the other hand, is stupid.  No one else has a purple lightsaber except for him and he's technically the only black jedi.  I just think of "the color purple" everytime he pulls out his lightsaber.  In other words adds nothing to the story and just makes it further from the OT.

However, it is something I'm sure other editors or even just straight viewers of these might not agree on.  Which is why I said I haven't decided to implement it.

There's even new CGI I could do to replace some stuff (probably Coruscant mostly, and a much stripped down opening battle), but again I'm don't think I want to go overboard on these.  Also, doing new CGI for parts would delay this project atleast a year, maybe two.

I wonder if you've thought about coloring Mace Windu's light saber blue. This project might be a good opportunity to fix a minor bone of contention some of us more conservative fans have with the prequels: Sam Jackson's silly purple saber.

Personally, I doubt anyone's fan edit would be detracted from by doing so. Just a thought.

I've thought about lightsaber and laser colors, and right now I have been changing blue lasers to red and changing Mace's lightsaber to blue.

I'm also thinking about changing a few sabers to yellow maybe (probably for Qui-Gon, Dooku, Ki-Adi Mundi, Plo-Koon, and Kit Fisto), but I haven't decided to implement that idea.

I would argue that Luke and Leia being revealed as siblings in ROTS is much better, dramatically speaking, than having the reveal be in ROTJ, for a couple reasons.

1. What is a better reveal, Obi Wan plainly saying "you have a sister," and then Luke correctly guessing Leia; or Luke being born, and then all of a sudden, twins! Luke has a sibling?!? Padme names is Leia! Luke and Leia are siblings! It just seems more exciting to learn it this way.

2. It would be a nice payoff for the machete ordering, connecting ROTS and ROTJ further and making the whole flashback worth while, as you get new information about the characters you started with.

I never though of it that way, and now that you mention it, that actually would be much better.  So then it certainly makes sense to do machette ordering, plus it would give a nice semi-cliffhangar to ROTS.  Thanks for mentioning that.

I don't know how many people have read this old article, but it really shows me how truly complicated it could be to find the right order to edit in mind of.

http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/s...eprequels.html

1- Chronological order doesn't really work at all.

2- Release order can certainly work, it works now. But with this it really makes the two trilogies feel seperate.

3- Machette order is probably the best because the films are a set of films instead of two trilogies. All I have to remove in the prequels are references to Leia and Luke being siblings and any references to ROTJ, which while challanging is very possible. Also, I'm pretty sure after finishing my prequel edits, I'll be working on starting back the ROTJ collaborative project over at OT.com

So I'm probably going with Machette (with Episode I though) for my edits.

But here's where the problem is: Anakin's fall to the dark side.  The movie had Padme dieing childbirth plot which is stupid.  And then Palpatine manipulating Anakin, makes Anakin like some complete idiot who's just his pawn.  He even doesn't freaking kill him when Palpatine reveals he is a sith!  I'm honest to say, I still have no clue how to get Anakin to be seduced by the dark side, not out of paranoia and manipulation.  I want the audience to understand Anakin, but not be with him.  I want the audience to feel sad for Anakin for falling away, not mad at him.  (that's how Obi-wan felt).  If I keep the secret in a certain way, I can just leave his fall to be more of a mystery.  I'm sure there are ways, I'm just lost here.

Check out L8twrtr's Dawn of the Empire. He rearranges scenes and makes the fall much more believable in my opinion.

I have actually watched his edit, I was one of the first to watch and review it when it came out.  I have the bluray copy with me right now.  His version is much more believable for sure, but at the same time it's still not exactly right.  I could allways double check his version and look at other scenes in the uncut film if anything else can be changed.

Don't worry more will be coming.  I've got a project file for the teaser trailer for Episode II lying on my backup drive, waiting to have the clips' colour correction finished and then the whole thing rendered.  I'll finish it as soon as I get my new computer and finish some work for Secior's HD Return Of The Sith edit.

Machete most certainly. It's the most logical way to watch the movies and no ones edited it for that yet. Also, no offense, but the "keeping the secret" thing is one of the stupidest ideas ever for thousands of ways that I've gotten into too many times elsewhere.

So definitely go with machete. And why not have the mirroring as well? I've always loved the mirrors that Lucas put in, and I'd love to see a restructuring based on that concept.

Seriously, this sounds like just about the coolest PT edits.

And that's one of the striving reasons for me to go to Machette.  Probably everyone who is going to see these edits knows Anakin is Luke's father and Vader, what's the point?

The mirroring probably could still be kept in machette.  The plot's are still different enough to distinguish.  And this will certainly, let me keep the same great feel of the originals.

Oh, and thanks.  I know these edits sounds so conceptual at the moment, but I can assure you and everyone else that I am hard at work on them.

Would it be possible to have an edit where it can be shown in machette order AND chronological order? For example not mention the name skywalker in episodes 1-3 or something like that. I don't mind really, either way I bet these movies' will be far superior to the original prequel trilogy

That would seem to be a tough one, because technically something edited chronlogically would have no vader reveal, but something machette order can show anakin becoming vader.  I guess if I removed the skywalker name, and left Anakin becoming Vader with Padme living but not showing her give birth to the twins.  The genders would not be referenced as to leave Luke's sibling completely anonymous.

The only issue with this is still the action in the films.  Clearly the action in the PT is made in a way to watch the films 4,5,6,1,2,3 as the Episode I tries to top Episode II which is tried to be topped by Episode III.  In chronlogical, I'd have to take down the level of the action and make TPM a proper introduction to the Star Wars Universe.  But in machette order, you don't have to make TPM the "first movie" and not have to take the action down as much.  Having a hybrid edit, would have to find a middle ground.  Though I care about this, others might not.  So a hybrid between the two could be a very possible.

It's an interesting thought.

So one thing, I've now thinking about switching the way I'll be editing these films.  I might want to edit them in reference to machette order (4,5,1,2,3,6) instead of chronological (1,2,3,4,5,6).  It has nothing to do with the fact it is harder to get the PT to work chronologically, it's more that I prefer to show Anakin become Vader but still want ROTJ to end the saga.  Another reason, is also the higher level of action that exists in these films that are clearly trying to be on top.  I will still make it sure ROTJ is still the most action-packed episode, by leaving out stuff like force lightning in Episode III.

I am still going to keep Sidious in Episode I, but not make it obvious it is Palpatine till Palpatine tells the audience.  I want his reveal to be a revelation to the audience, but I also want him to stay in Episode I to let his scenes mirror Darth Vader scenes from ANH, as my TPM edit will very closely mirror ANH as much as possible.  ATOC will mirror ESB much more in the restructure, and ROTS will closely mirror ROTJ, the difference being the good guys don't come out on top.

However this brings the mirroring films idea, an idea that would make more sense chronlogically.

So, should I go machette order or chronological?

I'd like to say I do have a better picture of the workflow I'm doing for this project.

As soon as I get my new computer, I will continue the testing phase of this project in which I will finalize the processes needed and the general looks for parts of each of the three films.

After this I will tackle, one film at a time, by didviding each film into color correction sections.  This means scenes or parts of scenes are seperately color corrected by themselves, and still in reference to other parts of the film.  This is the most efficient way to do this, if I struggle in one section I can go to another section and work on it to rest my mind.

After I'm done with all three films, I'll look at everything together and further tweak the color correction to make the films match as much as possible to themselves and the properly color corrected OT.

How often do you actually watch an entire Star Wars movie?
Time

I hadn't watched any of Star Wars films in their enitrety for a long time, a couple years.  ANH:R I've watched countless times, because I can actually stand it.  I recently tried watching the ESB bluray, and I got through it all, but it was hard to get through all the crappiness of the transfer and the SE changes.  I can't watch Empire again till ESB:R comes out, and it will only be ESB:R.

I have watched Episodes II and I within this week though, and will probably watch III soon. It's not as much hard as to watch as it is to stay awake.  THE PT is completely boring for the most part.  Those movies are so bad yet still have a good movie somewhere in there, it's just a matter of finding it.

But, I certainly won't be watching ROTJ for a while, unless there is currently a good HD edit floating around.  ROTJ has always been my least favorite Star Wars films, for its incredibly slow pace and action scenes that lack any tension whatsoever.

Thanksfor the comments guys.

@Hal 9000:

Cool, nice to know an editor willing to use this once it is completed.

@Brooks and Possessed:  TPM is probably the least cartoony because it was shot on 35mm for the most part and used a decent amount of models and matte paintings which I absolutely love.  However, the color has nearly always been screwed up.  Naboo, specifically.  For colour reference, I've been looking at my bluray of The Sound Of Music and looking it's colors.  The setting looks a lot like Naboo but looks beautiful and natural unlike TPM.

Also, that elongated shot in ROTS I have managed to fix in my upcoming edit of it, but it requires adding some additional Clone pilots in shots via Element 3D so I could divide the footage amongst the battle.

Sadly the bad CGI, you can only do so much.

And hopefully, I can really get my workflow of this project down after getting my new computer so I can really start pushing this through and also allow for more screenshots and actual clips.

I heard this line from Samuel Jackson in The Avengers, and thought of this edit:

"I recognise the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision, I've elected to ignore it."

-So maybe something with the Jedi-council?

Maybe other lines could be used too? http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0020752/quotes

I don't know just a thought.

As for the stuff with AOTC, none of the stuff mentioned would have made any significant improvement to the movie; it would have been just as bad, but in a slightly different way.

Though I do like the idea of Padmé pulling a knife on "evil" Anakin, it wouldn't have made her any less of a cognitive dissonant, racist ditz.

Well, I'm sure the article won't show you everything, they're hoping you buy the book to check it all out.
