Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

I still hold by back what I said on the first page of this thread. As of now, I have no doubt it could be a great film, given the talented writing and direction is involved. The biggest problem is truly will be whether the new actor (now we believe to be Alden Ehrenreich) can portray a convincing Han Solo. It’s given Han Solo isn’t entirely Harrison Ford. I trust Kasdan to keep Han in character given his experience writing for him.

But I definitely feel it is possible to do act well as a strong character and at the same time focus on doing an impression down to the smallest of details. The greatest example of this was in The Theory Of Everything. Now yes, Eddie Redmayne did have a bit of an advantage appearence-wise, especially since he could wear the signature Hawking glasses. But damn, his impersonation in that film has to go down as one of the best, most uncanny impersonations of real-life person. His mannerisms were to perfection, and yet it became second nature to a performance of a well-developed portrayal of Stephen Hawking.

The thing with Ingruber is truly he has the impersonation abilities but not the acting ability to make you forget it’s an impersonation. I believe Ehrenreich might be able to pull it off, I just haven’t seen enough of him to know whether he can pull off such a feat.

Anyhow, I just rewatched the Jump Street films this past week and damn I love those films. I’m still excited to see what they do with Han Solo.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

I remember reading up on the process used in that opening scene and it’s quite complex. Of course the results are extremely impressive, with the work being worth it. But to carry an entire film with a CG-hybrid de-aged actor would be very difficult, at least if you don’t want limitations.

For example, the shot I show above was obviously done in photoshop, but you could very easily carry that over into after effects with the new advanced face tracker. Problem is some expressions of Harrison are so drastically different from his younger years, that they seem near impossible to process. The shot above he has pretty contained expressions, but when he emotes to a high degree the work becomes very difficult to avoid the uncanny valley effect.

Of course, you can help this by sacrificing some age by blending the original and an over-processed “young version”. You can also use an additional layer to between the two to further deemphasize certain facial features that are more important to remove/smooth, which I also used.

The Luke shot on the other hand was simply the airbrushing over the original.

What is/was the best SW Game ever, on any platform?
Time

Well I honestly haven’t played too many Star Wars games.

I’ve played all the 4 Lego Star Wars games (I (PT), II (OT), CS, and III (CW)), and am looking forward to the Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens this summer. I have a love in general for all things LEGO, includes physical sets and the video games. In other words, I played them more out of the LEGO love than the Star Wars love.

And I’d played both The Force Unleashed video games prior to the whole EU decanonization. Eeh, I’m not so sure what I think of those. That was back before I even joined this site and was still part of the dark side, aka a big PT fan. Though I do still love the “The Clone Wars” tv series and still bother to work on (albeit slowly) a PT preservation project of sorts, so I’m not exactly an OT purist by any stretch of the imagination. I think I remember being more invested in the story rather than the gameplay though.

I’ve still yet to play the two Knights of the Old Republic games, just have never got around to it. I’ve always heard good things about them and have read up on some of the lore behind them.

And I have played some of the new Battlefront with friends who one consoles. (I’ve never owned any consoles, only game on PC/Mac) That game has candy for both the eyes and the ears, but I feel there’s just too little there. For the amount they charge for the game, not even including the DLC, it seems overpriced, or at least rushed.

But if I had to pick one out of what I’ve played, it’d probably be LSW III since it has the most fun gameplay out of all of the LEGO ones. It certainly helps having a cartoon series be the source for a video game too. Shame they never made a follow up for the latter seasons of the show.

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread

Not much new revelation but when working with the lossless trailer audio in Izotope RX to remove the voices, I found there to be com chatter/screams during the AT-AT shot. And the teaser does end with a full Vader breath, not just the exhale. Vader’s inhale is simply buried under Forest Whitaker’s lines.

I’m guessing that would confirm Vader to be in the film.

Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)

Is your intent to have your project non-BD compliant? From everything I’ve read HEVC isn’t BD-compliant.

Edit: Ok, it looks like Ultra HD Blu-ray discs will be encoded with HEVC.

I plan to release in 9GB 1080p MKV’s for viewing and high-bitrate 1080p m2ts versions intended as replacements for the original BD source. The 2 1080p versions I mentioned will be h264, with future 4K versions being hevc/h265. The 1080p release is being mastered at 4K, and converted back down to the standard rec709 color space. I’ve decided that said 4K releases will be further in the future, so I can tweak and enhance to work into proper 10 bit HDR versions that are ultra-hd bluray compliant.

Well I did emphasize this screenshot as a test to see what it can allow me to tweak. It was a from-scratch version, and I did mention that flux was left on meaning my screen was much darker and warmer than what’s good for working on that. I almost pulled it off, but just decided to leave it posted there for the heck of it.

Not to mention, I many times use 1080p compressed proxies to speed up the initial broadstroak of a shot regrade. After sufficient work is done, I replace that with the 4K chroma upsampled source and tweak the finer details. This screenshot is actually from the initial proxy.

I will, and I do mean this sincerely, post a clip of said scene with a different grade from the full quality source.

There’s been time spent learning to work with the HEVC codec, though I’ve yet to really test how editing programs handle it in comparison to h264.

And just for the project as a whole, in my personal life, I’m looking at shifting my career field out of the media realm. It wasn’t till a month ago that I felt led to another field, and really took to thinking what was once an enjoyable hobby was becoming something else. I felt especially drained this past year and a half, that I often didn’t feel the drive to spend the time needed on this and other personal projects, as dealing with work stress typically couldn’t be done when seeking to work on tasks too similar. The reasoning behind the change has more important reasoning that goes far beyond anything here, so rather this project will simply take a positive effect from this.

More work going into reworking color schemes, Here I couldn’t stand that awful orange-yellow, greenish-teal of the bluray. I’ve started rotoscoping more shots like I had initially intended to separate actors and backgrounds (since much of it is artificial anyways). There are many places like on-location shots outside where singular grading is fine, maybe some power masks here and there, or ranged HSL/secondary color work. Yet to get many remaining sections pleasing to my eye, I’m finding myself having to isolate objects, or at least foreground vs background. This shot is more indicative on how far I can push a shot, so don’t take it as a final.

JEDIT: D’oh! Looks I left flux on accident again while grading today, so there’s a cooler tint there than I meant. Oh well.

If Sheev ends up in this movie, they’re doing an incredible job at preventing leaks this time around.

Personally, though I’d like to keep the emperor as a later reveal if watching these movies chronologically. However, Vader I desperately want to see here. I want him portrayed in a way that would add weight to Star Wars, making him the character to truly fear. Seeing him wreck shit on the battlefield could be spectacular, and especially compensate for the ROTS Vader.
