Agreed. The IMAX preview was spectacular. I’ve left the probably station for the hype train.
3D was surprisingly good. I’ve been very negative about 3D films these days. (I hated the 3D for TFA) Yet the one trippy cg-heavy astral plane sequence shown during the preview was some of the most immersive 3D I’ve seen a long time. There was one particular part with all these hands that the detailed dimensionality made super creepy.

Also, loved how the posters weren’t so flimsy cheap poster paper. They were actually harder, and they even had enough extras to let everyone in the theatre take a second one if they wanted.

lol, though I feel bad for the other people in the line outside the theatre. My geeky friends and I were in the front of the line and were surely loud enough to probably annoy quite a few people.

The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey
Time

Watched it last night, pretty much what I expected.
Yeah, so there’s quite the quality of cringy quotes that I could put out from this. I’ll have to make a top worst list. One of the worst I can think of so far, is in the Jar-Jar section:

Jar Jar is actually based on Goofy. The funny thing is, if you look at old classic Disney movies, Walt Disney would always put in butt jokes. Feel free to Google “Walt Disney animation butt jokes.” There are butt jokes in all of those films, and I’ll tell you why. He noticed that, in his short films, that whenever there was, like, a butt, I’m talking about, like, an animal butt, like a rabbit, something innocent, little children giggled. And little children giggling in the audience actually got everyone else in the audience to laugh.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

I always thought the big issues with ROTJ weren’t till later in the movie, like the lack of tension during the third act. In other words, unless the opening is getting radical changes, there would be absolutely no reason to have to change the crawl. The crawl only sets up the movie, nothing else.

Gotta say this another great read for me while I work on this, and a positive outlook for the future of “digital” filmmaking. So glad Yedlin’s the cinematographer for Episode VIII.

It reminds me that work focused on building an accurate emulation is far more useful rather than trying to simply get the film look from a completely subjective standpoint. And while I can make occasional scene/shot tweaks, the emulation for each film needs to be able to work across the entire duration.

Also to note, I’ve fully moved over Davinci Resolve now, rendering the above-referenced clip not so applicable now. AE is my familiarity, but it’s better for this project to go all out. I’m more satisfied I haven’t rushed the project, as I realize just how much it will be better when I finally release it.

And I couldn’t remember if I mentioned this before, but I am thinking about doing a staggered release with TPM being the first to release.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Except that Rian is only writing the story treatment for Episode IX, not the screenplay itself. That’ll be handled by Collin Trevorrow (and his buddy Derek Connolly), as he announced a few months back.

My problem is that I simply don’t feel I know enough about Trevorrow’s style and approach to filmmaking to have an idea for what he will do for IX.

I’m not sure where they got this, but I found this at http://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/ and it was simply labelled; “Rogue One Planet Jedha”

They look like some form of priests, and they are on the planet Jedha which has been confirmed to be a pilgrimage for believers in the Force, but they look kind of sinister as well as walking alongside an Imperial officer, so doubt that they are good guys. Maybe we will get to see some Dark Side worshipers in RO? I haven’t been paying too much attention to the new canon, but do the general public in the SW universe know that the Empire is being run by a Sith lord?

Now there are two of them.

Made a few more tweaks, and am rendering a new version of the clip. Instead of putting the entire speed chase clip on youtube, I have a 1:30 min section of it and uploading a link to the clip download here. It’s a BD-compatible M4V, so you can preview it on your television, though I intend to use a better renderer for the final product, since Media Encoder isn’t the best.

“Been doing a lot of research into learning more color science type stuff. I’ve been again changing my methods, mainly to bring about a more accurate, and less “look” based grade. Specifically I’ve now been using Cineform Firstlight which I use to flatten and remove the tints from the image. To be able to use the program I do all the upsampling and upscaling process as one preceeding render resulting in files that get to ridiculous 300 GB per hour. That said, the amount I can raise the shadows (and to a lesser degree the highlights) is astonishing. It’s almost like taking the blu-ray and interpolating a RAW file from it. It’s far perfect, but it solves all the previous banding and noise issues I had in CG-heavy sequences. From there I’ve gone into AE where I keep the workflow 32 bit and use numerous adjustments to give it a filmic color response. I did research into techniques used to create film emulation lut’s so that I have more control over the process (also because LUT’s are designed for specific color profiles/cameras that these movies don’t line up with). I haven’t quite nailed it yet, but I’ve been able to get a satisfying filmic appearance without drastically changing any color decisions inherent in the film.”

Here I still left the highlight rolloff, and pushed shadows only slightly up. I’ll set the highlights and shadows to better levels as I finalize the curving adjustments.

EDIT: Well that’s a first…it was blocked despite leaving out the audio track, could’ve been it was too long of a clip. Hmm…gonna have to upload to Vimeo maybe.
